    Description: Paleo-thermometers in sedimentary basins often drive to misleading thermal modelling when applied alone or only on potentially productive Paleozoic source rocks. Different paleo-thermal and thermo-chronological data have been used as constraints to model the Silurian to Cenozoic succession of a recently drilled well in the onshore portion of the Baltic Basin, in northern Poland. This dataset provides an integrated platform for thermal maturity assessment contributing to the highly debated reconstruction of the thermal history of the Baltic Basin in the last decade. The well stratigraphy consists of a Lower Paleozoic marine clayey and arenaceous/calcareous succession, about 1000 m thick that is unconformably overlain by a 2000 m thick Permian to Cenozoic sequence, developed in a continental to shallow marine environment. Optical microscopy, FT-IR and Raman spectroscopy analysis of organic matter have been coupled with (U–Th)/He data to produce a robust vitrinite reflectance profile and constrain the 1D thermal modelling of the well. In addition, such a thermal maturity profile was validated by an independent thermal modelling calibrated by the smectite illitization kinetics. Both models identify high heat flow conditions (up to 1.7 HFU) at the end of Mesozoic. The Lower Paleozoic succession entered the late oil window of HC generation during this last heating event.

    Description: Poland is considered the most prospective country for shale gas production in Europe. Hydrocarbon generation/expulsion scenarios, drawn in the latest intensive exploration phases, tend to overestimate maturation levels when compared with brand new data acquired after recent drillings. We tested an integrated workflow to correlate published and original thermal maturity datasets for the Paleozoic to Jurassic successions cropping out in the Holy Cross Mountains. These successions, when preserved in subsurface, host the major source rocks in the area. The application of the workflow allowed us to highlight the burial and thermal evolutionary scenarios of the two tectono-stratigraphic blocks of the Holy Cross Mountains (Łysog ory and Kielce blocks) and to propose this approach as a tool for reducing levels of uncertainty in thermal maturity assessment of Paleozoic successions worldwide. In particular, published datasets including colour alteration indexes of Paleozoic microfossils (conodont, acritarchs) and vitrinite and graptolite reflectance data, show differences in levels of thermal maturity for the Łysog ory (mid mature to overmature) and Kielce (immature to late mature) blocks. Original data, derived from optical analysis, pyrolysis, and Raman spectroscopy on kerogen, and X-Ray diffraction on finegrained sediments, mostly confirm and integrate published data distribution. 1D thermal models, constrained by these data, show burial and exhumation events of different magnitude, during the Late Cretaceous, for the Łysog ory (maximum burial depths of 9 km) and Kielce (burial depths of 6 km) blocks that have been related to the Holy Cross Fault polyphase activity. In the end, Palynomorph Darkness Index and Raman spectroscopy on kerogen, for Llandoverian and Cambrian rocks, turned out to be promising tools for assessing thermal maturity of Paleozoic organic facies devoid of vitrinite macerals.

    Description: This paper presents a detailed geological map at the 1:20,000 scale of the Tocomar basin in the Central Puna (north-western Argentina), which extends over an area of about 80 km2 and displays the spatial distribution of the Quaternary deposits and the structures that cover the Ordovician basement and the Tertiary sedimentary and volcanic units. The new dataset includes litho-facies descriptions, stratigraphic and structural data and new 234U/230Th ages for travertine rocks. The new reconstructed stratigraphic framework, along with the structural analysis, has revealed the complex evolution of a small extensional basin including a period of prolonged volcanic activity with different eruptive centres and styles. The geological map improves the knowledge of the geology of the Tocomar basin and the local interplay between orogen-parallel thrusts and orogen-oblique fault systems. This contribution represents a fundamental support for in depth research and also for encouraging geothermal exploration and exploitation in the Puna Plateau region.

    Description: Thrusting at shallow depths often precludes analysis by means of structural indicators effective in other geological contexts (e.g., mylonites, sheath folds, shear bands). In this paper, a combination of techniques (includ- ing structural analysis, magnetic methods, as anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility and paleomagnetism, and paleo- thermometry) is used to define thrusting conditions, defor- mation, and transport directions in the Cameros–Demanda thrust (North Spain). Three outcrops were analyzed along this intraplate, large-scale major structure having 150 km of outcropping length, 30 km of maximum horizontal dis- placement, and 5 km of vertical throw. Results obtained by means of the different techniques are compared with data derived from cross sections and stratigraphic analy- sis. Mixed-layer illite–smectite and vitrinite reflectance indicating deep diagenetic conditions and mature stage of hydrocarbon generation suggests shallow depths during deformation, thus confirming that the protolith for most of the fault rocks is the footwall of the main thrust. Kinematic indicators (foliation, S/C structures, and slickenside stria- tions) indicate altogether a dominant NNW movement of the hanging wall in the western zone and NE in the eastern zone of the thrust, thus implying strain partitioning between different branches of the main thrust. The study of AMS in fault rocks (nearly 400 samples of fault gouge, breccia, and microbreccia) indicates that the strike of magnetic foliation is oblique to the transport direction and that the magnetic lineation parallelizes the projection of the transport direc- tion onto the kmax/kint plane in sites with strong shear defor- mation. Paleomagnetism applied to fault rocks indicates the existence of remagnetizations linked to thrusting, in spite of the shallow depth for deformation, and a strong defor- mation or scattering of the magnetic remanence vectors in the fault zone. The application of the described techniques and consistency of results indicate that the proposed multi- disciplinary approach is useful when dealing with thrusts at shallow crustal levels.

    Description: In this paper we reply to the criticisms advanced by Narkiewicz (2017) on the paper by Schito et al. (2017). We clarify the issues related to the stratigraphic and thermal maturity constraints used for reconstructing burial and thermal models of the two blocks of the Holy Cross Mountains. We also show how geological evidences brought by Narkiewicz (2017) as a proof of elevated Variscan heat flow are not conclusive or at least suggest the occurence of a localized thermal anomaly only along the area of the Holy Cross Fault. In the end, we performed new burial and thermal models in the Kielce region demonstrating that stratigraphic thickness variations between Schito et al. (2017) and Narkiewicz et al. (2010) produce only negligible differences in levels of thermal maturity of Paleozoic rocks. In addition, we outline that levels of thermal maturity for Silurian rocks can be matched only by using constant heat flow values through the Paleozoic and point to a decisive role for the absence of regional high Variscan heat flow in the area.

    Description: The 91.15 m thick St. Thomas section belongs to the Middle Globigerina Limestone, which is the intermediate member of the Globigerina Limestone Formation, and crops out along the eastern cliff of the Delimara Peninsula (the south-eastern part ofMalta Island). The sedimentary record is composed of alternating calcareous marls and marly limestones with subordinated prominent bioturbated indurated limestones that are deposited in a pelagic environment. For the first time paleomagnetic analyses of a Burdigalian succession have provided reliable data that allow the identification of five magnetozones that have been correlated to the Astronomically Tuned Neogene Time Scale, spanning the Early Miocene C6n–C5Dn interval. Calcareous plankton quantitative analyses integrated with paleomagnetic analyses, allowed us to identify and date several bioevents that have great potential for Mediterranean and extra-Mediterranean correlations in the interval between ~19.7 and ~17.2 Ma. In particular, the complete distributional range of the calcareous nannofossil Sphenolithus belemnos has been recorded as follows: the First Occurrence (FO) at 19.12 Ma, the First Common Occurrence (FCO) at 19.05 Ma, the Last Common Occurrence (LCO) at 18.44 Ma, and the Last Occurrence (LO) at 18.02 Ma. In addition, the FO and the FCO of Sphenolithus heteromorphus have been documented at 18.29 Ma and at 17.99 Ma, respectively. A new paracme interval in the lower part of the range of this species is described between 17.56 and 17.31 Ma. Concerning the planktonic Foraminifera, the main bioevents are the Common Interval top of Paragloborotalia siakensis at 19.55 Ma, a Common Interval of Globoquadrina dehiscens between 19.34 and 18.48 Ma, the Globigerinoides subquadratus FO at 18.43 Ma, and the onset of an acme interval of Paragloborotalia acrostoma that changes its coiling from random to prevalently sinistral at the same time, at 18.40 Ma. These new biostratigraphic data allowed us to place the succession in the standard Mediterranean calcareous plankton zonal schemes and to make some amendments to these schemes. The FCO of S. belemnos was revealed a more reliable marker than its FO for the base of the MNN3a Zone.With regard to the planktonic Foraminifera, the P. acrostoma AB-r/s has been used as a subzonal marker of the G. dehiscens/Catapsydrax dissimilis Zone, which now comprises three subzones instead of two. The deep marine paleoenvironmental setting, the excellent outcrops and the recognition of a continuous succession of bio-magnetostratigraphic events suggest that the St. Thomas section should be considered as a reference section for the lower Burdigalian of theMediterranean area and for future studies in the definition of the Burdigalian GSSP.

    Description: In order to understand the growth and retreat of glaciers in response to the glacial-interglacial changes, subglacial marine sedimentary sequences have been studied extensively in the continental shelf areas of the Ross Sea. The purpose is to comprehend the glaciomarine sedimentation change on the continental slope of eastern Pennell-Iselin Bank in the Ross Sea, using three gravity cores (C1, C2, C3) and three box cores (BC1, BC2, BC3) collected from sites (RS14-1, 2, 3), respectively, across the continental slope to the eastern side of the Pennell-Iselin Bank during XXIX° (2014) PNRA expedition (Rosslope Ⅱ project). Several sedimentological (grain size, magnetic susceptibility), elemental (XRF), geochemical (biogenic opal, total organic carbon, total nitrogen, C/N ratios, CaCO3), and isotopic (δ13C and δ15N of organic matter) parameters were measured along sediment cores with AMS 14C dating of bulk sediments. Core-sediments consist mostly of hemipelagic sandy clay or silty clay with scattered IRDs (Ice-Rafted Debris). A comparison of sediment properties between box cores and the top of gravity cores reveals that the loss of sediment during sampling is trivial. Sediment colors of gravity cores alternate between brown and gray downward. Based on the variation patterns of sediment properties, sediment lithology was divided into different units (A and B), and subunits (B1 and B2). AMS 14C dates and sediment properties assign Unit A, Unit B1, and Unit B2 to interglacial, deglacial, and glacial conditions, respectively. Unit A represents the Holocene and interglacial sediments deposited mainly by the suspension settling of biogenic particles with IRDs in the open marine condition. Unit B1 reflects the deglacial sediments with an increase in IRDs showing the transition of sediment properties from Unit B2 to Unit A by the retreat of subglacial ices. Unit B2 is characterized by different sediment properties, mainly supplied by the continuously lateral melt-water plume or distal part of debris flow originating from the front of grounding floes in the subglacial continental shelf under the ice shelf during the glacial period. Thus, Unit B contains mostly reworked and eroded sediments from the continental shelf with scattered IRDs. The influence of subglacial continental shelf sedimentation in terms of melt-water transport and/or distal stage of debris flow was limited as far as to the middle slope areas (Site 2) during the deglacial and glacial periods. The deeper Site 1 remains in seasonally open marine conditions during the glacial period, due to the peaks of biogenic opal and TOC contents.     Description: Reconstruction of Paleomagnetic Secular Variation (PSV) of the geomagnetic field is fundamental both to assess geodynamo models and to obtain age constraints for rocks, sediments and archaeological material. We present refined age-calibrated Holocene PSV and relative paleointensity (RPI) stack curves derived from Arctic marine sediments (Northwestern Barents Sea). The Holocene sections of four sedimentary cores were correlated on the basis of paleomagnetic trends and age models, and stacked. The resultant composite PSV and RPI Holocene records (NBS stack) and the reconstructed Holocene Virtual Geomag- netic Pole (VGP) path were evaluated in comparison with the most recent paleomagnetic stack curves and geomagnetic field models. The data indicate that during the Holocene time, the VGPs moved within the superficial projection of the inner core tangent cylinder, with the exception of short time intervals around 5600 and 3200 cal yr BP when VGPs extended to lower latitudes. These deviations might reflect regional geomagnetic features, such as persistent geomagnetic flux lobes at core-mantle boundary. Our data confirm that the large VGP shift observed around 5600 cal yr BP is the result of an increased radial magnetic field at the core-mantle boundary over North America, whilst the VGP shift around 3200 cal yr BP represents a major swing to middle latitudes toward the Middle East and might be associated to a regional high paleointensity peak, known as Levantine Iron Age Anomaly (LIAA).

    Description: Paleomagnetic and rock magnetic data were measured on glaciomarine silty-clay successions along an E-W sediment-core transect across the continental shelf and slope of the Kveithola paleo-ice stream system (south of Svalbard, north-western Barents Sea), representing a stratigraphic interval spanning the last deglaciation and the Holocene. The records indicate that magnetite is the main magnetic mineral and that magnetic minerals are distinctly less abundant on the shelf than at the continental slope. The paleomagnetic properties allow for the reconstruction of a well-defined characteristic remanent magnetization (ChRM) throughout the sedimentary successions. The stratigraphic trends of rock magnetic and paleomagnetic parameters are used for a shelf-slope core correlation and sediment facies analysis is applied for depositional processes reconstruction. The new paleomagnetic records compare to the PSV and RPI variation predicted for the core sites by a simulation using the global geomagnetic field variation models SHA.DIF.14k and CALS7K.2 and closest PSV and RPI regional stack curves. The elaborated dataset, corroborated by available 14C ages, provides a fundamental chronological framework to constrain the coupling of shelf-slope sedimentary processes and environmental changes in the NW Barents Sea region during and after deglaciation.

    Description: We report on an extensive paleomagnetic study (36 sites) of the Tuscan Nappe succession from the Northern Apennines Arc, aimed to reconstruct the tectonic evolution of the internal sector of this chain. We analyzed Eocene pelagic foreland ramp deposits (Scaglia Toscana Formation) and Oligocene–lower Miocene siliciclastic turbidites (Macigno and Falterona Formations). Paleomagnetic results show that the internal sector of the Northern Apennines underwent large counterclockwise (CCW) rotations with respect to the Adria-Africa foreland. A decrease in the rotation magnitude was observed from the southern to the northern sector of the arc (from 91 to 36°). This trend is opposite to that observed in the more external units of Northern Apennines and demonstrates that the oroclinal bending model, which has been proposed for the external units of the chain, is not appropriate to explain the evolution of the internal sector of the arc. On the basis of the observed paleomagnetic pattern, we propose a new tectonic model in which the Tuscan and Falterona-Cervarola units in the southern area were first rotated CCW along with the Corsica-Sardinia block during its lower Miocene rotational drifting and were later involved in the main phases of rotational emplacement and translation toward the outermost sector (Umbria domain), thus yielding the final curved shape of the Northern Apennines chain. Data from this study represent the first paleomagnetic evidence of the influence of the Corsica-Sardinia CCW rotation in the Apennines orogenic wedge deformation, in the general framework of the geodynamic evolution of the Central Mediterranean subduction system.
