    Notizen: Abstract Cultures of the cyanobacterium Microcystis firma show rhythmic uptake and release of ammonia under conditions of carbon limitation. The massive removal of ammonia from the medium during the first light phase has little impact on the intracellular pH: a pH shift of less than 0.2 U towards the alkaline can be measured by in vivo 31P NMR. Furthermore, the energy status of the cells remains regulated. In vivo 15N NMR of M. firma, cultivated either with labelled nitrate or ammonia as the sole nitrogen source, reveals only gradual differences in the pool of free amino acids. Additionally both cultivation types show γ-aminobutyric acid, acid amides and yet unassigned secondary metabolites as nitrogen storing compounds. Investigating the incorporation of nitrogen under carbon limitation, however, only the amide nitrogen of glutamine is found permanently labelled in situ. While transamination reactions are blocked, nitrate reduction to ammonia can still proceed. Cation exchange processes in the cell wall are considered regarding the ammonia disappearance in the first phase, and the control of ammonia uptake is discussed with respect to the avoidance of intracellular toxification.

    Notizen: Abstract In flowers of Hoya carnosa R. Br. the nocturnal emission of fragrance occurs according to an endogenous circadian rhythmicity. This was demonstrated by the continuation of rhythmical emission for two to three cycles under conditions of permanent illumination. The free-running period was approx. 29 h under these conditions. The inversion of light/dark cycles caused the entrainment of the next peak of emission by approx. 12 h whether the inversion was started with a light period or a with dark period prolonged for 12 h. When only the flower used for fragrance analysis was subjected to an inverted photoperiod, the rest of the plant remaining under the original light/dark cycle, the synchronization of fragrance emission occurred according to the Zeitgeber perceived by the individual flower.

    Notizen: Abstract A method for the sampling of volatiles emitted by individual flowers is described. Sampling over periods of 3 h allowed the examination of diurnal changes in quantity and quality of fragrance. In the species studied, Odontoglossum constrictum Lindl., Citrus medica L., Hoya carnosa R. Br., and Stephanotis floribunda Brongs., the fragrance was characterized by a few major components accompanied by a larger number of minor components. Flowers of all species produced volatiles in a rhythmical, diurnal fashion. Whereas in detached flowers of O. constrictum and C. medica rhythmicity could be observed for up to four cycles, flowers of H. carnosa showed this phenomenon only when attached to the plant. Maxima of emission were observed during the day in C. medica and O. constrictum whereas in H. carnosa it occurred during the night. In S. floribunda a conspicuous asynchronism of the emission of different volatiles was observed, resulting in the rhythmical change of fragrance quality.

    Notizen: Abstract Observations regarding floral fragrance and the rhythmicity of its emission in four plant species are reported. In the case of flowers of Hoya carnosa R. Br. which are characterized by circadian rhythmicity of scentedness (R. Altenburger and P. Matile, 1988, Planta 174, 248–252), temperature compensation of the free-running period as well as persistence of oscillations in permanent darkness have been demonstrated. A hitherto unidentified component of fragrance turned out to be identical to an unusual sesquiterpene recently discovered in cardamom oil (B. Maurer et al., 1986, Tetrahedron Lett. 27, 2111–2112). In Stephanotis floribunda Brongs. the rhythmic emission of fragrance is circadian in nature, but in a constant environment the oscillations of individual components are increasingly asynchronous. In excised flowers of Odontoglossum constrictum Lindl. the diurnal oscillations observed in a natural photoperiod are abolished under constant environmental conditions. They are resumed upon the return to a 12∶12-h photoperiod. The absence of circadian control could also be demonstrated in excised flowers of Citrus medica L. In this species, too, the daily maxima of scent emission reappear upon the transfer of flowers to a 12∶12-h light/ dark cycle. Results obtained upon the comparative analysis of volatiles in the headspace above the flowers and in petal extract indicate that the relative abundance of an individual compound in the floral fragrance is not a function of differential volatility.

    Beschreibung: Plant protection products in the environment are partly responsible for the progressive loss of biodiversity. The mostly insufficient ecological status of surface waters is often explained by habitat degradation and excessive nutrient input. But what role do plant protection products play in this context? The Kleingewässermonitoring (KgM) project provides a worldwide unique quantitative assessment of the impact of pesticides from diffuse agricultural sources on small and medium-sized streams. The dataset comprises 124 monitoring stream sections all over Germany covering a wide pollution gradient where consistent measurements were carried out in 2018 and 2019 during the major pesticide application period from April to July. These measurements include event-driven sampling to record surface rainfall-induced short-term peak concentrations in addition to regular grab sampling of pesticides and a wide range of other pollutants resulting in more than 1,000 water samples. All further relevant anthropogenic and environmental parameters reigning ecological stream quality were recorded comprehensively (morphological and stream bed structure, temperature, flow velocity, dissolved oxygen, pH, catchment land use, stream profile). The dataset also contains effect monitoring data featuring sampled invertebrate communities and bioassay analyses of water samples. The data enables an assessment of pesticide exposure and related effects as well as the analysis of complex causal relationships in streams.

    Beschreibung: Eulimnogammarus cyaneus and Eulimnogammarus verrucosus, closely related amphipod species endemic to Lake Baikal, differ with respect to body size (10- to 50-fold lower fresh weights of E. cyaneus) and cellular stress response (CSR) capacity, potentially causing species-related differences in uptake, internal sequestration, and toxic sensitivity to waterborne cadmium (Cd). We found that, compared to E. verrucosus, Cd uptake rates, related to a given exposure concentration, were higher, and lethal concentrations (50%; LC50) were 2.3-fold lower in E. cyaneus (4 weeks exposure; 6 °C). Upon exposures to species-specific subacutely toxic Cd concentrations (nominal LC1; E. cyaneus: 18 nM (2.0 μg L–1); E. verrucosus: 115 nM (12.9 μg L–1); 4 weeks exposure; 6 °C), Cd amounts in metal sensitive tissue fractions (MSF), in relation to fresh weight, were similar in both species (E. cyaneus: 0.25 ± 0.06 μg g–1; E. verrucosus: 0.26 ± 0.07 μg g–1), whereas relative Cd amounts in the biologically detoxified heat stable protein fraction were 35% higher in E. cyaneus. Despite different potencies in detoxifying Cd, body size appears to mainly explain species-related differences in Cd uptake and sensitivities. When exposed to Cd at LC1 over 4 weeks, only E. verrucosus continuously showed 15-36% reduced oxygen consumption rates indicating metabolic depression and pointing to particular sensitivity of E. verrucosus to persisting low-level toxicant pressure.

    Beschreibung: Organisms are exposed to ever‐changing complex mixtures of chemicals over the course of their lifetime. The need to more comprehensively describe this exposure and relate it to adverse health effects has led to formulation of the exposome concept in human toxicology. Whether this concept has utility in the context of environmental hazard and risk assessment has not been discussed in detail. In this Critical Perspective, we propose—by analogy to the human exposome—to define the eco‐exposome as the totality of the internal exposure (anthropogenic and natural chemicals, their biotransformation products or adducts, and endogenous signaling molecules that may be sensitive to an anthropogenic chemical exposure) over the lifetime of an ecologically relevant organism. We describe how targeted and nontargeted chemical analyses and bioassays can be employed to characterize this exposure and discuss how the adverse outcome pathway concept could be used to link this exposure to adverse effects. Available methods, their limitations, and/or requirement for improvements for practical application of the eco‐exposome concept are discussed. Even though analysis of the eco‐exposome can be resource‐intensive and challenging, new approaches and technologies make this assessment increasingly feasible. Furthermore, an improved understanding of mechanistic relationships between external chemical exposure(s), internal chemical exposure(s), and biological effects could result in the development of proxies, that is, relatively simple chemical and biological measurements that could be used to complement internal exposure assessment or infer the internal exposure when it is difficult to measure.
