Notes: [Auszug] We have analysed a suite of 12 state-of-the-art climate models and show that ocean warming and sea-level rise in the twentieth century were substantially reduced by the colossal eruption in 1883 of the volcano Krakatoa in the Sunda strait, Indonesia. Volcanically induced cooling of the ocean ...

Description: The tropical African region's socio-economic and agricultural life relies mainly on the modulation of the summer monsoon rainfall. The monsoon projection over the region from climate data and models requires evaluation. The evaluation process involves statistically comparing the global model's historical simulations with observations. Results from studying simulations of Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) show that significant southward bias in the location of precipitation and ITCZ persists over tropical Africa, especially during June to September season. The stagnation in the seasonal migration of precipitation could be attributed to biases in low cloud simulation in the models. A dynamic analysis indicates a weak and westward shift in models' mean vertically integrated moisture flux divergence. An energetic analysis shows a 50 per cent lower shortwave cloud radiative forcing in the models. The positive bias over the southeastern Atlantic ocean indicates that models cannot simulate sufficient low cloud, especially around the Angola-Benguela axis.
