    Description / Table of Contents: Summary The altered cortisol and adrenal androgen (i. e., dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate = DHEAS) secretion, observed during testing in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients not treated with corticosteroids, should be clearly regarded as a “relative adrenal insufficiency” in the setting of a sustained inflammatory process, as shown by high serum IL-6 levels. Androgens seem implicated in the pathophysiology of autoimmune disorders, including RA, as natural immunosuppressors. Low plasma synovial fluid testosterone concentrations are observed in male RA patients; low plasma DHEAS levels are mainly observed in female RA patients. The menopausal peak of RA suggests that estrogens and/or progesterone deficiency also play a role in the disease, and many data indicate that estrogens suppress cellular immunity, but stimulate humoral immunity (i. e., deficiency promotes cellular Th1-type immunity). Gene polymorphisms for enzymes involved in the steroidogenesis seem to further complicate the role of sex hormones in the susceptibility to autoimmunity. Acquired changes of sex steroid metabolism seem to also play a role in the peripheral sex hormone levels. In conclusion, a complex interaction between the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenocortical and gonadal axis functions is evident in RA.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Untersuchungen von bis dahin mit Glukokortikoiden unbehandelten Patienten mit rheumatoider Arthritis (RA) zeigen Abweichungen der Spiegel für Kortisol und adrenalen Androgenen (vor allem Dehydroepiandrosteronsulfat, DHEAS), die in der Relation zu gleichzeitig hohen Serumspiegeln von IL-6 eindeutig als relative Nebenniereninsuffizienz zu bezeichnen sind. Androgene dürften in der Pathogenese von Autoimmunerkrankungen, einschließlich der RA, als physiologische Immunosuppressoren eine Rolle spielen. Bei männlichen RA-Patienten wurden niedrige Testosteronspiegel sowohl im Plasma als auch in der Synovia gefunden, bei RA-Patientinnen waren die entsprechenden Spiegel für DHEAS erniedrigt. Die Häufund der RA um die Menopause legt weiter eine pathophysiologische Bedeutung sinkender Spiegel von Östrogenen und/oder Progesteron nahe. Zahlreiche Befunde deuten auf suppressive Effekte von Östrogenen auf die zelluläre Immunität, während sie stimulierend auf die humorale Immunität wirken (bzw. ein Östrogendefizit steigert die Th 1-Typ-vermittelte Immunität). Genetische Polymorphismen von Enzymen der Steroidbiosynthese scheinen zusätzlich die Rolle von Sexualsteroiden in der Entwicklung von autoimmunen Reaktionen zu begünstigen. Darüberhinaus beeinflussen erworbene Formen eines veränderten Steroidmetabolismus die peripheren Spiegel der Sexualsteroide. Zusammenfassend ist die pathogenetische Relevanz eines komplexen Zusammenwirkens der Achsen Hypothalamus-Hypophyse-Nebennierenrinde und Hypothalamus-Hypophyse-Gonaden bei RA evident.

    Description: The Central Mediterranean is a geodynamically complex area resulting from the interaction between the European and African plates. This process caused strong lateral variation in lithospheric thickness and thus strong variation in the Moho topography.In this work we propose a new 3D Moho map for the Central Mediterranean, obtained from the interpolation of different data as: 2D velocity models (Scarascia et al., 1994; Chironi et al., 2000; Nicolich et al., 2000; Cassinis et al., 2005; Dellong et al., 2018; Agius et al., 2022), gravimetric profiles (Chironi et al., 2000; Dellong et al., 2018) and interpreted seismic reflection profile (Finetti et al., 2005; Civile et al., 2008; Catalano et al., 2013; Fedorik et al., 2018; Tugend et al., 2019; Sulli et al., 2021).In order to optimize the geometry of the Ionian slab, we used the hypocenters of the seismic events extrapolated from different databases. In particular, we collected relocated seismic events from 1981 to the present.We obtained a new constrained 3D Moho map for the Central Mediterranean that presents a strong lateral variation. Furthermore, the Ionian slab is quite different with respect to the model proposed by DISS (2021) and its geometry has been adapted to the hypocenters of the deepest seismic events (〉40 km deep). In particular it was verticalized starting from about 200 km depth and the width was changed depending on new available data.This model will allow a better understanding of the structure of the upper mantle and of the complex geodynamics of the area.

    Description: The TOMO-ETNA experiment was planned in order to obtain a detailed geological and structural model of the continental and oceanic crust beneath Mt. Etna volcano and northeastern Sicily up to the Aeolian Islands (southern Italy), by integrating data from active and passive refraction and reflection seismic methodologies, magnetic and gravity surveys. This paper focuses on the marine activities performed within the experiment, which have been carried out in the Ionian and Tyrrhenian Seas, during three multidisciplinary oceanographic cruises, involving three research vessels (“Sarmiento de Gamboa”, “Galatea” and “Aegaeo”) belonging to different countries and institutions. During the offshore surveys about 9700 air-gun shots were produced to achieve a high-resolution seismic tomography through the wide-angle seismic refraction method, covering a total of nearly 2650 km of shooting tracks. To register ground motion, 27 ocean bottom seismometers were deployed, extending the inland seismic permanent network of the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) and a temporary network installed for the experiment. A total of 1410 km of multi-channel seismic reflection profiles were acquired to image the subsurface of the area and to achieve a 2D velocity model for each profile. Multibeam sonar and sub bottom profiler data were also collected. Moreover, a total of 2020 km of magnetic and 680 km of gravity track lines were acquired to compile magnetic and gravity anomaly maps offshore Mt. Etna volcano. Here, high-resolution images of the seafloor, as well as sediment and rock samples, were also collected using a remotely operated vehicle.

    Description: In this paper we present and discuss data concerning the morphostructural evolution at Ustica Island (Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy) during Late Quaternary. New insights on the relative sea-level changes of Ustica are coming from data collected during a geomorphological field survey around the island, together with the bathymetric analysis of the surrounding seabed and 14C datings on samples of speleothems, flowstones and marine shells found inside three selected sea caves. The survey was mainly accomplished on June 2015 through the first complete snorkel investigation off the about 18 km-long volcanic coast of the island, which allowed to precisely define location, relationship and morphometric features of coastal landforms associated with modern sea level. This study highlights the occurrence, for the first time in the Mediterranean, of tidal notches in correspondence of carbonate inclusions in volcanic rocks. The elevation of the modern tidal notch suggests that no significant vertical deformations occurred in the southeastern and eastern sectors of Ustica in the last 100 years. However, the presence of pillow lavas along the coast demonstrates that Ustica was affected by a regional uplift since the Late Quaternary, as also confirmed by MIS5.5 deposits located at about 30 m a.s.l., which suggests an average uplift rate of 0.23 mm/y. Radiocarbon dating of fossil barnacles collected inside the Grotta Segreta cave indicate an age of 1823 ± 104 cal. BP. The difference in height with respect to living barnacles in the same site suggests that their present elevation could be related to stick-slip coseismic deformations caused by the four earthquake sequences (two of which with Mw = 4.63 ± 0.46) that strongly struck the island between 1906 and 1924.

    Description: The Tindari Fault System (southern Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy) is a regional zone of brittle deformation located at the transition between ongoing contractional and extensional crustal compartments and lying above the western edge of a narrow subducting slab. Onshore structural data, an offshore seismic reflection profile, and earthquake data are analyzed to constrain the present geometry of the Tindari Fault System and its tectonic evolution since Neogene, including the present seismicity. Results show that this zone of deformation consists of a broad NNW trending system of faults including sets of right-lateral, left-lateral, and extensional faults as well as early strike-slip faults reworked under late extension. Earthquakes and other neotectonic data provide evidence that the Tindari Fault System is still active in the central and northern sectors and mostly accommodates extensional or rightlateral transtensional displacements on a diffuse array of faults. From these data, a multiphase tectonic history is inferred, including an early phase as a right-lateral strike-slip fault and a late extensional reworking under the influence of the subductionrelated processes, which have led to the formation of the Tyrrhenian back-arc basin. Within the present, regional, geodynamic context, the Tindari Fault System is interpreted as an ongoing accommodation zone between the adjacent contractional and extensional crustal compartments, these tectonic compartments relating to the complex processes of plate convergence occurring in the region. The Tindari Fault System might also be included in an incipient, oblique-extensional, transfer zone linking the ongoing contractional belts in the Calabrian-Ionian and southern Tyrrhenian compartments.

    Description: The seismic sequence which occurred in 1998 south of the Island of Ustica (offshore North Sicily) has been interpreted in the frame of historical recent seismicity and the area’s tectonics. This seismic sequence, characterised by shallow-depth and low-magnitude earthquakes (Md max. 4.3), took place in the thick and complex stack of the Sicilian-Maghrebian fold-and-thrust belt. The spatial distribution of the epicentres recorded during the January-August 1998 shows a cluster roughly NW-SE trending. The few shocks which occurred immediately after the Md 4.1 shock of the 14th September were located south-east of Ustica with a rough NE-SW trend. The focal mechanisms of major shocks are of a thrust type with horizontal compressive axes generally N-S trending. In the kinematic evolution of the study area, alternating extensional and contractional events have been recognised as having taken place during the Plio-Pleistocene. The present day seismic activity pointing out a new contractional episode is well framed in this evolutionary trend. The occurrence of pre-existing faults and the large number of earthquakes with low-magnitude support the hypothesis that this seismicity could be related to a frictional (re)activation of faults. Active compression in offshore North Sicily probably reflects the northwards motion of Africa relative to the Eurasian plate.

    Description: High resolution and multichannel seismic profiles coupled with multibeam echosounder (seafloor relief) data, acquired along the northern Sicily continental margin (southern Tyrrhenian Sea), document the occurrence of mound and pockmark features, revealing fluid escape processes. Along this margin, morphology of the high-gradient continental slope is irregular due to the presence of structural highs, slope failures and canyons, and is interrupted by flat areas at a mean depth of 1500 m. Seismostratigraphic analysis tools and methods were used to identify fluid escape structures and to work out a classification on the basis of their morpho-acoustic characteristics. The detailed 3D bathymetric chart was used to define the top view morphologic features and their areal distribution. With the aim to evaluate the geochemical content of fluids, we collected a 2.3 m long sediment core in correspondence of a pockmark at a depth of 414 m. Pore waters were sampled every 10 cm and analysed in relation to their conductivity (EC) and composition (d18O, dD, Li, Na, K, Mg, F, Cl, Br, NO3, SO4). The new data show the occurrence of different types of structures with highly contrasting seismic and morphologic signatures, both dome-type and concave-upward structures. The latter have a characteristic circular shape and are known as pockmarks. Morphobathymetric, stratigraphic and structural data suggest that these structures occur along fault planes, mainly associated with diagenetic carbonates and fluid venting activity. Pockmarks could be the result of both fault and landslide structures, as they appear aligned along a straight direction and occur in proximity of the slope, and are associated with slope instabilities. The structural features are possibly associated with the recent tectonics mapped on-land as well as the widespread seismicity of the margin. Geochemical features reveal that pore water is slightly enriched in heavy isotopes with respect to Mediterranean seawater, while the distribution profiles of EC, ion concentration (Cl, SO4, Na, K, Mg, Ca), ion/Chloride ratios (Na/Cl, K/Cl, Ca/Cl, Mg/Cl and Alk/Cl) seem to indicate the existence of an external source of fluids and the occurrence of sediment-fluids interaction processes. A possible mechanism causing pore water freshening could be the destabilisation of gas hydrates

    Description: The ongoing unrest at the Campi Flegrei caldera (CFc) in southern Italy is prompting exploration of its poorly studied offshore sector. We report on a multidisciplinary investigation of the Secca delle Fumose (SdF), a submarine relief known since antiquity as the largest degassing structure of the offshore sector of CFc. We combined high-resolution morphobathymetric and seismostratigraphic data with onshore geological information to propose that the present-day SdF morphology and structure developed during the initial stages of the last CFc eruption at Monte Nuovo in AD 1538. We suggest that the SdF relief stands on the eastern uplifted border of a N-S-trending graben-like structure formed during the shallow emplacement of the Monte Nuovo feeding dike. We also infer that the high-angle bordering faults that generated the SdF relief now preferentially allow the ascent of hot brines (with an equilibrium temperature of 1798C), thereby sustaining hydrothermal degassing on the seafloor. Systematic vertical seawater profiling shows that hydrothermal seafloor venting generates a sizeable CO2, pH, and temperature anomaly in the overlying seawater column. Data for the seawater vertical profile can be used to estimate the CO2 and energy (heat) outputs from the SdF area at 50 tons/d ( 0.53 kg/s) and 80 MW, respectively. In view of the cause-effect relationship with the Monte Nuovo eruption, and the substantial gas and energy outputs, we consider that the SdF hydrothermal system needs to be included in monitoring programs of the ongoing CFc unrest.

    Description: In order to unravel the tectonic evolution of the north-central sector of the Sicily Channel (Central Mediterranean), a seismo-stratigraphic analysis of single- and multichannel seismic reflection profiles has been carried out. This allowed to identify, between 20 and 50 km offshore the central-southern coast of Sicily, a *80-km-long deformation belt, characterized by a set of WNW–ESE to NW–SE fault segments showing a polyphasic activity. Within this belt, we observed: i) Miocene normal faults reactivated during Zanclean–Piacenzian time by dextral strike-slip motion, as a consequence of the Africa– Europe convergence; ii) releasing and restraining bend geometries forming well-developed pull-apart basins and compressive structures. In the central and western sectors of the belt, we identified local transpressional reactivations of Piacenzian time, attested by well-defined compressive features like push-up structures and fault-bend anticlines. The reconstruction of timing and style of tectonic deformation suggest a strike-slip reactivation of inherited normal faults and the local subsequent positive tectonic inversion, often documented along oblique thrust ramps. This pattern represents a key for an improved knowledge of the structural style of foreland fold-and-thrust belts propagating in a preexisting extensional domain. With regard to active tectonics and seismic hazards, recent GPS data and local seismicity events suggest that this deformation process could be still active and accomplished through deep-buried structures; moreover, several normal faults showing moderate displacements have been identified on top of the Madrepore Bank and Malta High, offsetting the Late Quaternary deposits. Finally, inside the northern part of the Gela Basin, multiple slope failures, originated during Pleistocene by the further advancing of the Gela Nappe, reveal tectonically induced potential instability processes.
