Description / Table of Contents: Fluorescein angiography is an indispensable tool in modern ophthalmology. It is founded on the evaluation of phenomena related to the behavior intravenously administered sodium fluorescein in the tissues of the ocular fundus. Commonly, texts on fluorescein angiography merely describe the typical pattern, quality, and quantity of the phenomena specific to a variety of vascular and other diseases of the retina and choroid. In contrast, the present book deals with the morphological prerequisites and structural changes on which the individual phenomena are based. This knowledge provides the retina specialist, the general ophthalmologist, and the basic scientist alike with valuable information toward understanding the nature and mechanism of the underlying disorders. The book represents a unique mixture of textbook and atlas, always combining concise statements in English, German, and Spanish on one page with didactically conceived explanatory illustrations on the facing page.

Notes: Abstract • Background: The present study was untertaken in an attempt to broaden the spectrum of known neuronal markers and neuropeptides in the main lacrimal gland of the human by light-microscopic immunohistochemistry. • Methods: Using antisera against the neuronal markers protein gene product (PGP) and S-100 protein (S-100), the distribution of nerve fibers in the human main lacrimal gland was studied. Vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP), calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), neuropeptide Y (NPY) and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) were identified by their specific antisera. • Results: The nerve fibers are distributed throughout the interstice between the glandular tubules. Associations were also found between nerve fibers and both the interlobular ductal system and blood vessels (mainly arterioles). Within the glandular lobules isolated groups of secretory cells stained positive for S-100 protein. Nerve fibers situated in the glandular interstice between the tubules showed predominantly positive immunoreactions for the neuropeptide VIP, while only very few fibers stained positive for CGRP, NPY and the catecholamine marker TH. Nerve fibers associated with interlobular blood vessels were mainly CGRP and NPY positive and stained only very rarely for VIP. The epithelia of interlobular ducts and excretory ducts were associated with CGRP-immunoreactive nerve fibers. • Conclusion: The neuropeptides identified in the lacrimal gland indicate the complexity with which a variety of biologic signals regulate and modulate the lacrimal gland.

Notes: Abstract Pars plana incisions were made in 11 rhesus monkey eyes. Six animals had injections of 0.1 ml of blood into the vitreous cavity with a 25-gauge needle and five animals had vitrectomy through a 4-mm incision with a multifunction vitrectomy probe. Six to 13 years later the scars in the pars plana were found to consist of fibrous tissue and blood vessels which extended from the episclera into the vitreous. The intravitreous scar was shaped by the incarceration of vitreous strands in the internal aspect of the wounds. There were quantitative, but no qualitative differences between the two types of incision. The ultrastructural features were those of mature scar tissue: fibroblasts, adult collagen, uveal melanocytes, macrophages, myelinated and non-myelinated nerves, and capillaries with non-fenestrated endothelium. There were associated proliferative ciliary epithelial changes, but no evidence of ciliary epithelial metaplasia.

Notes: Abstract In all, 21 diabetic and 23 non-diabetic patients underwent endothelial fluorophotometry before and at 4 days, 3 weeks and 6 weeks after phacoemulsification with posterior chamber intraocular lens (IOL: PMMA) implantation. After topical fluorescein instillation, fluorophotometry was performed using an automated computerized fluorophotometer. The aim of this study was to assess early postoperative endothelial damage quantitatively and to detect possible differences between diabetic and non-diabetic patients in that regard. Preoperatively, the endothelial permeability of diabetic patients did not differ from that of non-diabetic individuals (P = 0.5). At 4 days after phacoemulsiflcation with posterior chamber IOL implantation, endothelial permeability was significantly increased in both groups (P 〈 0.001), but significantly more so in diabetic patients (P 〈 0.001). The endothelial barrier function had fully recovered 3 weeks after surgery in non-diabetic subjects and 6 weeks after surgery in diabetic patients as well.

Notes: Summary Immediately adjacent to the inner leaflet of the nuclear envelope cross sections through the nucleus of adult human retinal pigment epithelial cells reveal alternating light and dark dots. In tangential sections these formations appear as a striation that runs at a right angle to the rows of nuclear pores. The dark and light stripes have a width of approximately 200 Å each. It is likely that these findings represent a variation of the nuclear limiting membrane (zona nucleum limitans) that has been described in other cells of the body.

Notes: Summary Approaching the ora serrata the firm adhesion between sensory retina and pigment epithelium is lost. The resulting space is termed ora gap. Abnormal photoreceptors and displaced cell bodies of Müller cells project into this gap. Anteriorly the gap is limited by a fusion of the neuroretinal and pigment epithelial adhesion zones. Free cells that can be identified as dislocated pigment epithelial cells are regularly found in the ora gap. Adjacent to the very peripheral retina a marked decrease of the number of basal infoldings of the pigment epithelium can be observed. The clinical significance of the findings is discussed.

Notes: Summary In order to elucidate some of the prerequisites for intraocular application of the tissue adhesive “Histoacryl” (butyl-2-cyanoacrylate) in retinal detachment surgery, the following questions were examined: 1. The tissue reaction of choroid, retina, and vitreous body to Histoacryl; 2. the definite fate of this substance in those tissues; and 3. the general gluability of pigment epithelium and neuroretina. The material proved to be well tolerated by all tissue layers examined. In sclera and in suprachoroid, the adhesive lead to a mild protracted foreign-body reaction and was gradually broken down and phagocytosed by the tissue. In choroid and retina the material caused a general loosening and atrophy of the tissue with circumscribed loss of the typical nuclear zones of the sensory retina. The vitreous body was indifferent to Histoacryl, even when the adhesive was applied in excessive amounts. When brought between retinal pigment epithelium and sensory retina, the glue showed excellent adhesive strength.

Notes: Summary The HLA linkage group, located on chromosome 6, is composed of serologically defined (SD-) loci (HLA-A, -B and -C) and of a MLC (= mixed lymphocyte culture-) or lymphocyte defined (LD-) locus (HLA-D). Different alleles of these loci are linked together as well as with loci for the synthesis of some complement components and the properdin factor B (= Bf-system) by strong positive linkage disequilibria (gametic association). The indication of a HLA linked genetic control of immunoresponsiveness makes the HLA system one of the biologically most important immunogenetic systems in man. The associations, found between single HLA determinants and diseases, can be explained in different ways, but may contribute to a better understanding of the etiopathogenesis of diseases and of the biological role of the HLA linkage group.

Notes: Summary In an effort to demonstrate biochemical changes occuring in malperfused retinas, oxygen-induced retrolental fibroplasia was produced in kittens. Immediately before the onset of vasoproliferations, that is in the stage of maximal hypoxia, the activities of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PDH), malate dehydrogenase (MDH) and isocitrate dehydrogenase (ICDH) were determined. The activity of MDH was found to be significantly decreased, whereas the activities of the other enzymes showed no major changes.
