Description: During a visit to the Leyden Museum last September I was able to examine several species of birds, which had not come under my notice during the preparation of the 7th volume of the »Catalogue of Birds”. Some of the species proved to be very distinct and I greatly regret that they have been omitted from the volume or relegated to foot-notes, as being of doubtful validity. During the whole of the time that this volume was going through the press, I was engaged in the moving of the Zoological Collections from Bloomsbury to South Kensington, and was unable to get abroad for my accustomed course of study in foreign Museums. I am sensible that the value of this volume has been somewhat impaired by these omissions, and I publish these supplementary notes, in order to supply descriptions of several species which are wanting to its pages. Description: During my visit to Leyden in April of the present year, I had the pleasure of examining carefully the collection of Rallidae as it had been arranged by the late Professor Schlegel in the year 1865 (cf. Cat. Mus. Pays-Bas, Vol. V, pp. 1—79). The following notes, which form a small commentary on Schlegel’s Catalogue, may be of some use to future workers on the Rallidae.

Description: In the Leyden Museum are some specimens of a bird from Timor, bearing the label \xc2\xab Orthotomus subulatus, M\xc3\xbcll. Verh.\xc2\xbb, a name which I cannot find to have been published anywhere, and as far as I am aware the species has never been described under any other name.\nGenerically this Wren comes very close to Pnoepyga, and has no rictal bristles and the front aspect of the tarsus entire. It has, however, a much longer bill, thinner, and more compressed, the culmen exceeding the hind toe and claw in length. I propose to separate it generically as Orthnocichla. The type will be

Description: During my recent visit to the Leyden Museum I was much interested in examining the fine series of birds\xe2\x80\x99-skins which had been brought home by Mr. B\xc3\xbcttikofer and Mr. Stampfli from their expeditions to Liberia.\nAmongst other valuable specimens I was particularly attracted by a small Sparrow-Hawk, of which Mr. B\xc3\xbcttikofer had preserved three adults, two females and a male. These are identified by him as Accipiter hartlaubi of Verreaux \xc2\xb9), but I saw at once that they were not the same as the bird I had so named in the Catalogue of Birds (Vol. I, p. 150; pl. 6, fig. 2).

Notes: Filament regeneration has been investigated in electroformed Cu-SiOx-Cu sandwich devices at cryogenic temperatures (≈125 K). The initial regeneration characteristics can be modeled by proposing a new scheme, which we term "concerted regeneration.'' This is the preferential regeneration of filaments located close to intact filaments (which generate a local increase in temperature via power dissipation). This coordination in the regeneration of filaments can also cause "explosive regeneration,'' the rapid regeneration of a batch of filaments, and thus a sudden jump in the device current, and also "concerted rupture,'' a sudden drop in conductivity due to a batch of filaments rupturing simultaneously. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The presence of a sequestered encephalitogenic determinant for Lewis rats in the bovine myelin BP was demonstrated with synthetic peptide sequences prepared in our laboratory by the Merrifield solidphase method. The sequence of the encephalitogenic determinant (residues 75-84) from bovine BP (peptide S6), H-Ala-Gln-Gly-His-Arg-Pro-Gln-Asp-Glu-Asn-OH, is similar but not identical to the sequence reported for the guinea pig BP (peptide S53), H-Ser-Gln-(–)-(–)-Arg-Ser-Gln-Asp-Glu-Asn-OH. The presence or the absence of Gly-His from the sequence of either the bovine or the guinea-pig determinants did not alter their encephalitogenic potencies; however, the presence of Gly-His at positions 77 and 78 together with H-Gly-Ser-Leu-Pro-Gln-Lys- (residues 69-74) at the N-terminal end of the bovine determinant destroyed its encephalitogenic potency. In contrast to the absence of Gly-His from the potent encephalitogenic guinea-pig BP, guinea-pig fragment 44-89, and synthetic peptide S49, its presence in the bovine sequence prevents recognition of this determinant and renders the parent bovine BP, bovine fragment 44-89, and synthetic peptide S8 (residues 69-84) relatively non-encephalitogenic. The results of this study suggest that intramolecular interactions occur between adjacent amino acids, conferring secondary or tertiary structures upon this region of the bovine BP which renders the encephalitogenic determinant inaccessible for recognition by the host animal. The presence of sequestered disease-inducing determinants needs to be considered in choosing a particular BP for therapeutic use.
