    Description: The oxygen and carbon isotopic compositions of the planktonic foraminifer, Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (sinistral), were determined at 20-cm intervals through the 'composite' top ~ 22 m of sediments at ODP Site 645 (Holes 645B, 645C, 645F, and 645G) and at 10-cm intervals through a 9-m piston core (85-027-016) collected during the Hudson site survey. Quantitative analyses of palynomorphs, notably dinocysts, and of planktonic foraminifers were performed. Organic and nitrogen contents and isotopic composition of nitrogen and carbon in organic matter also were determined. These data provide a high-resolution record of changes that occurred in surface-water masses during the last glacial cycle in Baffin Bay. The basin experienced low planktonic productivity during most of the late Pleistocene, either from dilution in surface water by meltwater discharges from the surrounding ice-sheet or from the presence of a relatively dense sea-ice cover. Peaks of meltwater discharge are indicated by d18O values as low as about 1.5 per mil, correlative d13C- d18O shifts, low concentration of planktonic foraminifers, high concentrations of glacially reworked pre-Quaternary palynomorphs, and low-salinity dinocyst assemblages. As a whole, d18O values ranging between 4.5 and 2.5 per mil allow the establishment of an 18O stratigraphy spanning isotopic stages 5 to 1. Because of the poor core recovery, the general paucity of microflora and microfauna, and the possible occurrence of slumping or debris flow at Site 645, further interpretation remains problematic.

    Description: Faunal and stable isotopic data in Sites 646 and 647 provide a ~0.9-Ma paleoclimatic and paleoceanographic record for the Labrador Sea, that is supported by a floral record for the past ~0.3 Ma. At both sites, most glacial stages generally are dominated by polar fauna and flora with low species diversity. Although minor occurrences of subpolar species also were observed in lowermost parts of several glacial stages in Site 646, the faunal classification of Ruddiman and Mclntyre (1976) suggested the presence of polar ecological water masses in the area during most of the glacial periods. In several glacial stages at Site 647, both the faunal and floral data indicate that early periods were marked by subpolar and transitional ecological water masses. The interglacials are characterized by a polar fauna at Site 646 and by polar and transitional faunas and floras at Site 647. However, several interglacial stages in Site 646 include a subpolar flora, in contrast to a planktonic foraminifer fauna similar to that found in the glacial stages. The occurrence of subpolar water masses in several glacial isotopic stages indicates significant northward advection of warmer waters into the Labrador Sea during the early glacial periods, which provided a corridor of oceanic warmth extending from mid- to high latitudes and contributed an additional source of moisture for continental ice-sheet growth. Similar conditions also were documented in the northwest Labrador Sea, Grand Banks, and the North Atlantic.

    Description: Palynological analyses of sediment core MSM343310 from Disko Bugt (68°38.861' N, 53°49.493' W) document decadal‐ to centennial‐scale variability of sea surface conditions during the last ~3,600 years. Dinocyst fluxes (〉10⁴ cysts/cm² yr⁻¹) indicate a very high productivity. Dinocyst assemblages dominated by Islandinium minutum, Brigantedinium spp., Islandinium? cezare, and the cyst of Pentapharsodinium dalei suggest low surface salinity and marked shifts in summer sea surface temperature. The application of the modern analog technique to dinocyst assemblages, using an updated reference data set with new sites from the West Greenland margin, led to reconstruct decadal‐centennial‐scale variations in sea surface salinity and temperature, in phase with the δ18O variations in the Camp Century ice core. At ~1.5 ka BP, the seasonal sea ice cover records an important regime change, from winter‐only sea ice to more unstable conditions marked by successive cooling pulses with sea ice cover of up to 8 months/yr. The data suggest a close relationship between hydrographic conditions and regional climate over Greenland. Our record shows variations with a mean 200 years periodicity until ~2 ka BP, which supports the hypothesis of climate variations driven by solar variability. After 1.5 ka BP, our data show a variability characterized by a 60-70 year periodicity, which suggests linkages with the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation and southwestward migration of the atmospheric polar front. The most recent part of the record, from ~1900 CE to 2007 CE, is characterized by assemblages reflecting warmer surface conditions and reduced sea ice cover.
