Notes: Background: Buckwheat flour (BF) is known as a potent food allergen. Sensitization to it usually occurs by ingestion but also by inhalation in occupational or domestic exposure. Buckwheat chaff-stuffed pillows (BCP) can be contaminated with BF during the process of pilling, and many Korean children and adults use BCP for health reasons. Methods and Results: We here present three cases of BF allergy in children using BCP, who had been treated as nonatopic asthmatics after undergoing the routine allergy skin tests and serologic tests. We took careful clinical histories, and performed skin prick tests (SPT), the radioimmunoassay (RIA) for specific IgE, the BCP-elimination test, the BF bronchial provocation test, and IgE Western blot. All three children showed positive skin reactions to BF, but none of them had positive reactions to house-dust mites. Nocturnal asthmatic symptoms were improved during 7 days of BCP elimination, and asthmatic responses were observed by bronchial provocation tests with homemade BF extract. Serum BF-specific IgE antibodies and several IgE-binding proteins were detected by RIA and Western blot analysis, respectively. Conclusions: Thus, a small amount of BF attached to BCP can induce BF sensitization, and BCP should be considered a main cause of childhood nocturnal asthma in those asthmatics exposed to these pillows.

Description: As part of the global synthesis effort sponsored by the Global Carbon Cycle project of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and U.S. Department of Energy, a comprehensive comparison was performed of inorganic carbon parameters measured on oceanographic surveys carried out under auspices of the Joint Global Ocean Flux Study and related programs. Many of the cruises were performed as part of the World Hydrographic Program of the World Ocean Circulation Experiment and the NOAA Ocean-Atmosphere Carbon Exchange Study. Total dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC), total alkalinity (TAlk), fugacity of CO2, and pH data from twenty-three cruises were checked to determine whether there were systematic offsets of these parameters between cruises. The focus was on the DIC and TAlk state variables. Data quality and offsets of DIC and TAlk were determined by using several different techniques. One approach was based on crossover analyses, where the deep-water concentrations of DIC and TAlk were compared for stations on different cruises that were within 100 km of each other. Regional comparisons were also made by using a multiple-parameter linear regression technique in which DIC or TAlk was regressed against hydrographic and nutrient parameters. When offsets of greater than 4 μmol/kg were observed for DIC and/or 6 μmol/kg were observed for TAlk, the data taken on the cruise were closely scrutinized to determine whether the offsets were systematic. Based on these analyses, the DIC data and TAlk data of three cruises were deemed of insufficient quality to be included in the comprehensive basinwide data set. For several of the cruises, small adjustments in TAlk were recommended for consistency with other cruises in the region. After these adjustments were incorporated, the inorganic carbon data from all cruises along with hydrographic, chlorofluorocarbon, and nutrient data were combined as a research-quality product for the scientific community.

Notes: Ferroelectric twin-domain structures in epitaxial Pb(Zr, Ti)O3 (PZT) thin films grown on various single-crystal substrates such as MgO(001), KTaO3(001), and SrTiO3(001) were investigated by two-dimensional reciprocal space mapping using synchrotron x-ray diffraction. Each system showed a characteristic domain structure. PbTiO3 thin films grown on MgO(001) showed highly c-axis oriented domain structures consisting of a periodic array of 90° twinlike domains. Perfectly c-axis oriented films were obtained on SrTiO3(001), while the films grown on KTaO3(001) showed a-domain dominant structures with a small amount of c domains embedded in matrix a domains. Contributions of net elastic strain stored in each heteroepitaxial layer and its relaxation to the final domain structures were evaluated considering thermodynamic equilibrium relief of coherency strain by misfit dislocation generation at the film growth temperature. A comparison between theoretical consideration and experimental results clearly demonstrates that the nature of effective misfit strain and its relaxation during film growth play a critical role in the formation of domain structures in epitaxial PZT thin films. Moreover, it was verified that the control of such critical strain factors by changing film composition could modify dominant domain structures in a drastic way. In addition, it was found that the crystalline quality of the films is closely correlated to the tilting nature of the domain structure in each system and coherency strain across the 90° domain boundary is accommodated mainly by the domain tilt of the minor domain. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The crystal structure and magnetic ordering of the Mn spins in polycrystalline NdMnO3 have been investigated by means of neutron diffraction and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements. The compound crystallizes into an orthorhombic symmetry of space group Pbnm. Three peaks were observed in the temperature dependence of the in-phase component of the ac susceptibility, χ′(T). Neutron diffraction measurements show that all three peaks observed in χ′(T) are of magnetic origin, and are associated with the ordering and the reorientation of the Mn spins. Both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic couplings between the Mn spins were observed, resulting in a noncollinear magnetic structure. The Mn spins order at Tm(approximate)75 K, and the moment saturates at ∼20 K at 〈μz〉=2.21 μB. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Effects of the shape anisotropy on the thermally activated spin relaxation have been investigated using the stochastic Landau–Lifshitz–Gilbert equation. The relaxation times of a noninteracting particle and a thin film were compared with each other. In a noninteracting particle, the relaxation time largely increased with the shape anisotropy when the damping constant was smaller than a certain critical value. In this study, the critical damping constant was 0.02. However, the effect of the shape anisotropy on the energy barrier was negligible in a thin film. All of these results can be explained from the effect of magnetostatic interaction that is enhanced by precession motion at low damping constant. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Individual layers of Ni0.8Fe0.2, Ni0.8Fe0.13Co0.07, TaN, and CrSi, and a full magnetic random access memory stack consisting of NiFeCo/CoFe/Cu/CoFe/NiFeCo/TaN/CrSi multilayers, were etched in high density Cl2/Ar plasmas either with or without concurrent ultraviolet (UV) illumination. Under optimized conditions, etch rate enhancement up to a factor of 5 was obtained for NiFeCo, TaN, and CrSi with UV illumination; whereas the etch rate of NiFe was retarded. Post-etch cleaning with H2 or SF6 plasmas or H2O rinsing was necessary in all cases in order to prevent corrosion of the metal layers from chlorinated etch residues. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Strain relaxation and its effect on domain formation of epitaxial PbTiO3 thin films grown on MgO (001) substrates were investigated as a function of film thickness by two-dimensional reciprocal space mapping using synchrotron x-ray diffraction. Within a few hundreds of angstrom region, it was observed that c-domain abundance, α, was critically dependent on film thickness. As the film thickness increased further, α was saturated at a value of ∼0.75. The HK mesh scan on PbTiO3 (100) reflections revealed that directional tilting of a domains with four-fold symmetry began to develop as the film thickness exceeded 650 Å. Thermodynamic equilibrium relief of the coherency strain was evaluated based on Mattews–Blakslee criteria that determine thickness dependent misfit accommodation. This theoretical consideration with experimental results led us to conclude that the unrelaxed residual misfit strain has a significant effect on the domain formation, particularly in the region below the thickness of 1000 Å. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: 1 In the present investigation we examined the regulation of calmodulin (CaM)- and protein kinase C (PKC)-dependent pathways by cytosolic Ca2+ in the contraction of cat lower oesophageal sphincter (LES). 2 Force developed in response to increasing doses of acetylcholine (ACh) was directly related to the increase of the [Ca2+]i measured by fura-2. Thapsigargin, which depletes Ca2+ stores, reduced the contraction and the [Ca2+]i. In addition, contraction in response to maximal ACh was reduced by the CaM inhibitor CGS9343B but not by the PKC inhibitor chelerythrine. The contraction in response to submaximal ACh was reduced by chelerythrine but not by CGS9343B. 3 In permeabilized cells, the contraction in response to low Ca2+ (0.54 μm) was also reduced by CGS9343B. 4 The response to high Ca2+ (1.0 μm) was reduced by CGS9343B. ACh also inhibited PKC activation induced by diacylglycerol, which activation is inhibited by the N-myristoylated peptide inhibitor derived from pseudosubstrate sequences of PKCαβγ (myr-PKC-αβγ), but not of myr-PKC-α. 5 These data are consistent with the view that activated CaM-dependent pathways inhibit PKC-dependent pathways, this switch mechanism might be regulated by Ca2+ in the LES.
