    Notes: Abstract Lipid and fatty acid compositions of five notothenioid fishes from the Antarctic Weddell and Lazarev Seas were investigated in detail with regard to their different modes of life. The pelagic Aethotaxis mitopteryx was the lipid-richest species (mean of 61.4% of dry mass, DM) followed by Pleuragramma antarcticum (37.7%DM). The benthopelagic Trematomus lepidorhinus had an intermediate lipid content of 23.2%DM. The benthic Bathydraco marri (20.8%DM) and Dolloidraco longedorsalis (14.5%DM) belonged to the lipid-poorer species. Triacylglycerols were the major lipid class in all species. Important fatty acids were 16:0, 16:1(n-7), 18:1(n-9), 18:1(n-7), 20:5(n-3) and 22:6(n-3). The enhanced proportions of the long-chain monounsaturated fatty acids, 20:1 and 22:1, in the lipid-rich pelagic fishes clearly reflected the ingestion of the two copepod species, Calanoides acutus and Calanus propinquus, which are the only known Antarctic zooplankters rich in these fatty acids. Although wax esters are the major storage lipid in many prey species, they were absent in all notothenioid fishes studied. Thus, wax esters ingested with prey are probably converted to triacylglycerols via fatty acids or metabolised by the fishes. The enhanced lipid accumulation with increasingly pelagic lifestyle has energetic advantages, especially with regard to improved buoyancy. It is still unknown to what extent these lipids are utilised as energy reserves, since it has been suggested that not only the benthic but also the pelagic Antarctic fishes are rather sluggish, with a low scope for activity and hence low metabolic requirements.

    Description: We conducted a year-round mesozooplankton study in the Arctic Kongsfjord from August 1998 until July 1999 to investigate seasonal abundance and vertical as well as stage distributions of the prevalent taxa. It is the first investigation in Kongsfjord that covers the Arctic winter season and provides reasonable estimates also of small-sized copepod species. Abundant smaller copepods comprised Oithona similis, Pseudocalanus minutus, Microcalanus spp., Triconia borealis and Acartia longiremis. Among the larger copepods, Calanus finmarchicus, C. glacialis, C. hyperboreus and Metridia longa dominated. The thecosome pteropod Limacina helicina was also an important component. Abundance maxima occurred in November (988,669 ind. m−2) with one to two orders of magnitude higher numbers as compared to all other months (39,832–200,067 ind. m−2). The summers of 1998 and 1999 were characterized by intrusions of Atlantic water, but the community was not entirely dominated by advected boreal species. During winter, the majority of the mesozooplankton occurred below 100 m. Advection is the most likely reason for the accumulation of zooplankton at depth in winter, but local production may also contribute to high overwintering numbers. Much lower abundances of most species in spring suggest high winter mortality and emphasize the importance of sufficient reproductive success during the previous summer to ensure enough winter survivors as seed stock for the coming reproductive season. This study was conducted prior to the recent warming trend in the Arctic. Therefore, it provides valuable baseline data and allows comparing present and future states of the zooplankton community in Kongsfjord.

    Description: Climate change proceeding at unprecedented pace is currently redistributing life on Earth. Warming of the upper ocean and the atmosphere have altered sea ice extent and seasonal dynamics in the Arctic, and similar changes are observed in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean and West Antarctic. This affects stocks of major pelagic species such as krill. A so far neglected key player, the predatory amphipod genus Themisto, covers a distribution from temperate to polar regions where it regionally represents the dominant food source for higher trophic levels. Poleward range expansions of several Themisto species have been already been documented or predicted as warming continues. In the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean, changes in seasonal sea ice extension are causing strong annual variations of krill stocks, whilst salps are on the rise and shifting their distribution poleward. A third key player, Themisto gaudichaudii, is now also anticipated to extend its range southward. In the Arctic, the ice-dependent Arctic T. libellula and the sub-Arctic boreal T. abyssorum co-exist. Considering the ongoing Atlantification of the Arctic, a range expansion of T. abyssorum concomitant with a retraction of T. libellula’s range are very likely to occur. Due to major knowledge gaps in the ecology, biology and genetic connectivity of Themisto species, the likelihood of range shifts and their consequences for food web structures and biogeochemical cycles remain largely unexplored. We conducted a comparative study of Themisto populations to investigate their distribution, connectivity and trophic ecology. Using population genetic methods, the species status and phylogeography of T. gaudichaudii, were characterized. A genetic homogeneity and high degree of phenotypic plasticity related to feeding morphology were revealed, indicating the potential of T. gaudichaudii lineages to thrive in regions further south. In order to predict the consequences of an increased predation pressure of T. gaudichaudii which may influence the standing stock of Antarctic krill and salps, feeding experiments and molecular diet analyses were carried out. Similar analyses were applied on Themisto species from the northern hemisphere, in order to characterize their genetic connectivity within and across different water masses (Atlantic vs. polar) in Fram Strait and East Greenland and compare with the Antarctic populations.

    Description: The Asian shore crab Hemigrapsus sanguineus (De Haan, 1853) has recently established populations in the North Sea and now occurs within the native ranges of the green crab Carcinus maenas (Linnaeus, 1758). To determine potential competitive effects and to assess the progress of the invasion, species-specific population characteristics (numerical abundances, biomasses, and size distributions) of the two species around the island of Helgoland (German Bight, southern North Sea) were compared for surveys conducted in 2009 and 2014. Sampling sites were chosen based on accessibility and differed in their topography and wave exposure, which allowed testing for the influence of these factors on the establishment success of H. sanguineus. The numerical abundance and biomass of H. sanguineus increased markedly and approached those of C. maenas in 2014. At a sheltered site, H. sanguineus even outnumbered C. maenas, whereas the converse was observed at a site exposed to strong winds and waves. Although such contrasting abundance patterns between the native and the introduced shore crab may be the result of direct interference, the dominance of H. sanguineus at the sheltered site may also be explained by enhanced larval settling rates caused by odors of conspecifics. The results suggest that the invasion of H. sanguineus has not yet reached its equilibrium, and population abundances in the North Sea are expected to further increase in the future.

    Description: Tolerance of organisms towards heterogeneous and variable environments is highly related to physiological flexibility. An effective strategy to enhance physiological flexibility is the expression of polymorphic enzymes. This seems to be the case in the brown shrimp Crangon crangon. It shows high reproduction rates, feeds opportunistically on endo- and epibenthic organisms, and is apparently well adapted to variable environmental conditions. Previous electrophoretic studies revealed a high level of polymorphism and no consistent phenotype of digestive enzymes between individuals. In order to understand the underlying biochemical processes, we carried out a transcriptome-based study of digestive enzymes of C. crangon. Detailed sequence analyses of triacylglycerol lipase, phospholipase A2, alpha amylase, chitinase, trypsin and cathepsin L were performed to identify putative isoforms. The number of isoforms, and thus the degree of polymorphism varied among enzymes: lipases and carbohydrases showed higher numbers of isoforms in enzymes that besides their extracellular function also have diverse intracellular functions. Furthermore, cysteine proteinases showed a lower polymorphism than serine proteinases. We suggest that the expression of enzyme isoforms improves the efficiency of C. crangon in gaining energy from different food sources.

    Description: In this chapter, the effects of temperature change—as a main aspect of climate change—on marine biodiversity are assessed. Starting from a general discussion of species responses to temperature, the chapter presents how species respond to warming. These responses comprise adaptation and phenotypic plasticity as well as range shifts. The observed range shifts show more rapid shifts at the poleward range edge than at the equator-near edge, which probably reflects more rapid immigration than extinction in a warming world. A third avenue of changing biodiversity is change in species interactions, which can be altered by temporal and spatial shifts in interacting species. We then compare the potential changes in biodiversity to actual trends recently addressed in empirical synthesis work on local marine biodiversity, which lead to conceptual issues in quantifying the degree of biodiversity change. Finally we assess how climate change impacts the protection of marine environments.

    Description: Calanoid copepods in boreal and polar habitats are confronted with a strong variability in food supply. The abundant species in the Southern North Sea, Temora longicornis, cannot accumulate extensive energy stores to buffer longer periods of food paucity. These copepods react immediately to dietary changes and therefore, recent trophic conditions must strongly influence their metabolic and functional responses. To elucidate the implications of feeding history, we collected two cohorts of T. longicornis females, which were characterized by different feeding histories and consequently different physiological backgrounds. In the North Sea in April 2005, females fed at a higher trophic level than in May, were poor in lipids, showed low proteinase activity and produced 41 eggs female-1 d-1. In May, females were significantly smaller than in April, contained more lipids, had a higher proteinase activity and produced 26 eggs female-1 d-1. In the laboratory, females from each group were fed with either autotrophic diatoms or heterotrophic dinoflagellates for three days. Irrespective of different initial conditions, all T. longicornis females incorporated diet-specific fatty acids within 24 h. Also in both experiments and each dietary treatment, egg production increased after 24 h indicating that females were food-limited in situ in April and in May. Responses differed, however, with regard to lipid accumulation and enzyme activities . Total lipid contents increased significantly in females during experiment I (April) but not during experiment II (May), despite higher algal lipid levels during experiment II. Proteolytic activity increased during experiment I, but decreased during experiment II. These deviating responses of T. longicornis females to food conditions suggest that detailed knowledge about the initial physiological state of specimens is required, when investigating adaptive mechanisms and metabolic performances of copepods by means of experiments.

    Description: Hyperiid amphipod crustaceans are abundant in Southern Ocean waters from the Polar Frontal Zone to shelf waters where they represent a major prey for fish and seabirds. Hyperiella dilatata has evolved a peculiar anti-predatory behaviour: it abducts chemically-protected, shell-less pteropods from the water column and carries them on their dorsal side. Pteropods such as Clione antarctica are known to produce de novo a predator-deterrent chemical. Hence, the tandem formation of amphipods, abducting pteropods from the water column, represents an efficient protection from visual predators. This phenomenon was known from shelf waters around the continent, however, in the open ocean it was so far undocumented. We report this association at four different open-water sites in the Southern Ocean. Molecular analyses based on COI “barcode” sequences revealed that one Hyperiella lineage abducted Spongiobranchaea pteropods in the Polar Frontal Zone whilst a distinct Hyperiella lineage associates with Clione further south in the Weddell Sea. Hypotheses on the origin and function of these species-specific associations are provided in the context of biogeographic data and hyperiid phylogenetic histories.
