Description: The Southern Ocean is among the largest contemporary sinks of atmospheric carbon dioxide on our planet; however, remoteness, harsh weather and other circumstances have led to an undersampling of the ocean basin, compared with its northern hemispheric counterparts. While novel data interpolation methods can in part compensate for such data sparsity, recent studies raised awareness that we have hit a wall of unavoidable uncertainties in air-sea CO2 flux reconstructions. Here, we present results from autonomous observing campaigns using a novel platform to observe remote ocean regions: sailboats. Sailboats are at present a free of charge environmentally friendly platform that recurrently pass remote ocean regions during round-the-globe racing events. During the past 5 years, we collected 〉350 000 measurements of the sea surface partial pressure of CO2 (pCO(2)) around the globe including the Southern Ocean throughout an Antarctic circumnavigation during the Vendee Globe racing event. Our analysis demonstrates that the sailboat tracks pass regions where large uncertainty in the air-sea CO2 flux reconstruction prevails, with regional oversaturation or undersaturation of the sea surface pCO(2). Sailboat races provide an independent cross-calibration platform for autonomous measurement devices, such as Argo floats, ultimately strengthening the entire Southern Ocean observing system. This article is part of a discussion meeting issue 'Heat and carbon uptake in the Southern Ocean: the state of the art and future priorities'.

Description: A physical - biogeochemical survey was carried out in the northeastern and southwestern tropical Atlantic on the German RV Meteor in 2018, M145. The main objective of the work in the oxygen minimum zone of the eastern tropical North Atlantic was to improve oxygen budget estimates including water mass age and consumption estimates. The Bottle file contains data from the discrete samples taken on CTD casts, including data from the S/T/P/O sensor. Biogeochemical observations during this cruise include discrete measurements of the transient tracers SF6 sand CFC12, the macronutrients nitrate/nitrite, phosphate and silicate, as well as oxygen by winkler titration.

Description: Particle size distribution data was collected during multiple cruises globally with several regularly intercalibrated Underwater Vision Profilers, Version 5 (UVP5; Picheral et al 2010). During the respective cruises, the UVP5 was mounted on the CTD-Rosette or as a standalone instrument and deployed in vertical mode. The UVP5 takes pictures of an illuminated watervolume of about 1 Liter every few milliseconds. Imaged items are counted, their size measured and abundance and biovolume of the particles is calculated. For different size bins, this information is summarized in the columns "Particle concentration" and "Particle biovolume". For further details please refer to Kiko et al. (in prep.) "A global marine particle size distribution dataset obtained with the Underwater Vision Profiler 5".

Description: Hydrographic (CTD) profiles of Temperature, Salinity, Dissolved Oxygen, Chlorophyll A fluorescence and Coloured Dissolved Organic Matter (CDOM) collected in the Arctic Ocean, over the western Eurasian Basin and Lomonosov Ridge, between 2 August and 11 September 2021, from I/B Oden. This is the Swedish contribution to the international Synoptic Arctic Survey. This dataset merges the full-depth physical CTD and the shallow biological CTD profiles. Both systems had the standard SeaBird SBE911 plus system with dual sensors to measure in-situ temperature and conductivity and single sensors measuring pressure and oxygen. The physical CTD also had a CDOM sensor (Turner Cyclops fluorometer), while the Chl-A fluorometer (WET Labs, ECO-AFL/FL) was moved throughout the expedition between the two systems. Salinity, Oxygen, Chl-A fluorescence and CDOM were calibrated against sample data collected and analysed by the co-authors: - Salinity samples from the deep stations were analysed post-cruise using a salinometer (Guildline Autosal) and IAPSO standard seawater at the GEOMAR, Germany. - Dissolved oxygen was determined onboard using an automatic Winkler titration setup with UV detection (Scripps Institute of Oceanography Oxygen Titration System version 2.35m). - Chl-A concentration was determined post-cruise from flow cytometry (FCM) at Linnaeus University, Sweden. The samples consisted of 4 mL cryovials, of which 3.8 mL was sample water and 76 μL 25% EM grade glutaraldehyde solution (Glu stock). The samples incubated at room temperature for 5 minutes before flash freezing in liquid nitrogen and then placing in the -80 °C freezer in cryoboxes. - CDOM was determined post-cruise at the National Institute of Aquatic Resources - DTU Aqua, Denmark, following the method of Lawaetz and Stedmon (2009) This dataset contains the 1-m bin-averaged profiles. For more information about each sensor and their calibration, the reader is invited to check the cruise report (final version submitted on 20 September; shareable version with DOI coming soon)

Description: The last few decades have seen dramatic changes in the hydrography and biogeochemistry of the Mediterranean Sea. The complex bathymetry and highly variable spatial and temporal scales of atmospheric forcing, convective and ventilation processes contribute to generate complex and unsteady circulation patterns and significant variability in biogeochemical systems. Part of the variability of this system can be influenced by anthropogenic contributions. Consequently, it is necessary to document details and to understand trends in place to better relate the observed processes and to possibly predict the consequences of these changes. In this context we report data from an oceanographic cruise in the Mediterranean Sea on the German research vessel Maria S. Merian (MSM72) in March 2018. The main objective of the cruise was to contribute to the understanding of long-term changes and trends in physical and biogeochemical parameters, such as the anthropogenic carbon uptake and to further assess the hydrographical situation after the major climatological shifts in the eastern and western part of the basin, known as the Eastern and Western Mediterranean Transients. During the cruise, multidisciplinary measurements were conducted on a predominantly zonal section throughout the Mediterranean Sea, contributing to the Med-SHIP and GO-SHIP long-term repeat cruise section that is conducted at regular intervals in the Mediterranean Sea to observe changes and impacts on physical and biogeochemical variables.

Description: Dissolved gases that act as passive transient tracers have become increasingly popular in physical oceanography for determining the age of a water mass as well as its circulation. In particular, chlorofluorocarbon CFC12 and Sulfur Hexafluoride SF6 are most adapted for comparatively deep water masses that may be several decades old. We here present the full depth concentrations of CFC12 and SF6 from samples collected in June-July 2017 as part of the Polarstern expedition PS106.2 (ARK-XXXI/1.2) ”SiPCA” north of Svalbard, from the shelf to the Nansen abyssal plain. During selected casts, up to ten samples were collected from the Niskin (as first sample collected upon opening of the Niskin). All Niskin bottles had been cleaned with isopropanol beforehand. Samples were collected by connecting a 300 ml glass ampoule to the Niskin tap via an airtight stainless steel system. We let the ampoule fill three times for rinsing, screwed the system shut after the fourth filling, and immediately put the ampoule in icy cold water. These ampoules were flame sealed immediately after collection, one at a time, so that the last sample was sealed at worst a few hours after the cast. The samples were analysed on land in the months that followed the expedition, at the GEOMAR Helmholtz Zentrum für Ozeanforschung, according to the method described in Stöven (2011). These concentrations will now contribute both to local studies of the Svalbard shelf break and its ecosystem, but also to our understanding of the large scale circulation of deep water masses in the Arctic Ocean.
