Description:
Description:
As part of the subtropical gyre of the North Atlantic, the Yucatan Current is forced remotely by the rotational
of wind power in the the north Atlantic Ocean. However, recent studies suggest that the seasonal cycle of
the flow through Yucatan channel (Tyuc) is partially forced by trade winds of the Caribbean Sea. Here, the
year-on-year change of Tyuc was analyzed from a proxy calculated using 23 years of altimetry data; these
results were compared with the reanalysis wind data.as well as the sea level mean pressure data. A signal
was observed with a period of ~4 years, which is apparently forced by the trade winds of the Caribbean Sea
and by the North Atlantic Subtropical High Pressure System. In addition, the results suggest that pressure
anomalies caused by El Niño phenomenon in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean are an important regulator
of pressure gradients between the western Atlantic Ocean and the eastern Pacific Ocean. This may modify
wind intensity; therefore it has a significant impact on the year-on-year change of Tyuc. This relationship
was observed during the 1999-2000 period when Tyuc was particularly low, apparently as a consequence of
relaxing trade winds which in turn coincides with an anomalous long La Niña event (33 months).
