Notizen: The causes of tooth erosion are varied, but all are associated with a chemical attack on the teeth and resulting loss of tooth structure. Etiologic factors related to erosion cited in the literature include bulimia, eating acidic foods, soft drink consumption, acid reflux, and swimming, among others. This clinical report suggests that chronic use of headache powders can also be a factor leading to tooth erosion.

Notizen: Manufacturers use six different titanium-based biomaterials to fabricate dental implants. Each of these materials, including four grades of commercially pure titanium and two titanium alloys, has distinct mechanical and physical properties. Clinicians should recognize these differences for optimal treatment planning and patient care.

Notizen: Abstract: As part of a long-term evaluation of endosteal dental implants in primates, this paper describes the histological response to plate-form and root-form implants. Thirty-six primates received 48 mandibular distal abutment implants. After healing, the implants were restored with fixed partial dentures, which remained in function for two years. A subset of the group was ligated at the gingival sulcus to biologically stress tissues supporting the implants. Crestal bone height around implants was quantified using digital subtraction radiographic techniques. The ligated implants lost more crestal bone than non-ligated implants, as shown by ANOVA (P 〈 0.05). After retrieval, implants were embedded and sectioned for histomorphometric analysis including measurement of per cent osseointegration. Both plate-form and root-form non-ligated implants demonstrated about 60% osseointegration. When ligated, plate-form implants dropped to an average integration of only 34%, while root-form implants maintained 62% integration, a significant difference. These data show that in this primate model, plate-form and root-form implants maintained integration while in function for two years. When stressed with ligation, root-form implants maintained relative amounts of osseointegration, while per cent osseointegration of plate-form implants decreased.

Notizen: Abstract: Radiopharmaceutical isotopes are widely used clinically to detect tumors of osteogenic origin. One example is Technetium-99m methylene diphosphonate (Tc-99m-MDP). When viewed with a gamma camera, the concentration of the isotope (increased gamma activity) indicates an area of increased bone activity. This technology provides an opportunity to measure bone growth around implants in vivo. The purpose of this study was to measure Tc-99m-MDP activity around titanium alloy implants placed in the tibiae of rats. Some implant sites were treated with a growth factor; other sites served as controls. The hypothesis tested was that implants placed with a growth factor would have greater associated Tc-99m-MDP activity. Twelve adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were anesthetized and surgical access to the medial proximal tibiae was obtained. Titanium alloy screw implants were placed in six animals along with 65 μg of acidic fibroblast growth factor (FGF-1); the other six animals received implants only and served as controls. After five days, rats were injected with 1500 μCi of Tc-99m-MDP. After 3 hours, rats were imaged with a gamma camera. The Tc-99m-MDP intensity associated with each implant was quantified and the means for each group were compared using ANOVA. Implants treated with FGF-1 demonstrated significantly more Tc-99m-MDP activity than implants alone. This suggests that Tc-99m-MDP analysis may be a useful tool for determining bone growth around implants in laboratory animals in vivo.

Notizen: Abstract Interactions between a naturally-collected algal species and strains of bacteria with which it was closely associated were examined under controlled conditions. Three strains of bacteria, Pseudomonas, Xanthomonas and Flavobacterium, were isolated from Oscillatoria. These bacteria were grown in combination with axenic cultures of the Oscillatoria culture as well as with several additional algal species. Oscillatoria growth was stimulated by all of the bacteria, but other algal species varied in their response. Some were stimulated, but others were inhibited or unaffected by exposure to the bacterial strains. There were also observations indicating that some algae may be able to develop resistance to antagonistic bacteria. These data suggest that succession and dominance of individual algal species may be influenced by interactions with bacteria.

Notizen: Abstract This investigation was conducted to characterize the algal inhibitory material originally isolated by Proctor (1957b) from Chlamydomonas. Analysis of purified extracts demonstrated that the inhibitor was a mixture of fatty acids. The identity and relative percentages of most of the components of the mixture were determined by GLC analysis. There is evidence that unsaturated fatty acids were responsible for the majority of the toxicity.
