    Description: Between 28 March and 1 April 2020, Stromboli volcano erupted, with overflows from the NE crater rim spreading along the barren Sciara del Fuoco slope and reaching the sea along the NW coast of the island. Poor weather conditions did not allow a detailed observation of the crater zone through the cameras monitoring network, but a clear view of the lower slope and the flows expanding in the area allowed us to characterize the flow features. This evidence was integrated with satellite, GBInSAR, and seismic data, thus enabling a reconstruction of the whole volcanic event, which involved several small collapses of the summit cone and the generation of pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) spreading along the slope and on the sea surface. Satellite monitoring allowed for the mapping of the lava flow field and the quantification of the erupted volume, and GBInSAR continuous measurements detected the crater widening and the deflation of the summit cone caused by the last overflow. The characterization of the seismicity made it possible to identify the signals that are associated with the propagation of PDCs along the volcano flank and, for the first time, to recognize the signal that is produced by the impact of the PDCs on the coast.

    Description: Lava flows are recurring and widespread hazards that affect areas around active volcanoes, having the potential to cause significant social and economic loss. The ongoing demographic congestion around volcanoes increases the potential risk and leads to a growing demand for faster and more accurate systems to safeguard the population. The main mitigation action for slowing down and possibly diverting lava flows is the building of artificial barriers, that can limit their destructive effects and reduce losses. Here we present a Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm for the configuration of artificial barriers, in terms of location and geometric features. The goal is to minimize the lava flow impact based on the spatial distribution of exposed elements, using the physics-based MAGFLOW model to run the lava flow scenarios for each barrier configuration. Our algorithm has been tested on Etna (Italy), showing how it can effectively safeguard the threatened areas, diverting lava away from them.

    Description: Implicit integration of the viscous term can significantly improve performance in computational fluid dynamics for highly viscous fluids such as lava. We show improvements over our previous proposal for semi-implicit viscous integration in Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics, extending it to support a wider range of boundary models. Due to the resulting loss of matrix symmetry, a key advancement is a more robust version of the biconjugate gradient stabilized method to solve the linear systems, that is also better suited for parallelization in both shared-memory and distributed-memory systems. The advantages of the new solver are demostrated in applications with both Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids, covering both the numerical aspect (improved convergence thanks to the possibility to use more accurate boundary model) and the computing aspect (with excellent strong scaling and satisfactory weak scaling).
