    Description: Evidence is presented for an increasing oxygen deficiency in the water below the pycnocline in Kiel Bay (Western Baltic) over the past 30 years. Subpycnocline oxygen consumption rate in summer has increased by a factor of 2-3 since 1957. This development is considered to be related to a proportional increase in primary production in the entire transition area between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea as a consequence of progressing coastal eutrophication. A simple box-model is presented which satisfactorily describes the variation of subpycnocline oxygen concentrations in the Bay during the summer months as a function of oxygen consumption rate and rate of effective vertical water exchange.
