Abstract Reproduction was studied inPseudolithoderma extensum (Crouan et Crouan) Lund (Lithodermataceae, Phaeophyceae) from Helgoland. Both gametophytes and sporophytes are crustose. Fertile gametophytes were found in nature in January and February. They released motile isogametes from plurilocular gametangia, each gamete leaving its locule through a separate opening. Plasmogamy was observed directly under the microscope. In laboratory culture, zygotes developed to crustose thalli, whereas unfused gametes died soon after germination. Sporophytes were found in nature with fertile unilocular sporangia in March. In culture, zoospores released from these sporangia also developed to crusts. Kuckuck’s observation at the beginning of the century (1912a) thatP. extensum exhibits an alternation of isomorphic generations and isogamy is thus confirmed.
