Abstract Irrespective of cropping and N-fertilization, the amount of available N significantly decreased and fixed NH 4 + -N increased with increase in the period of investigation. A substantial decrease in the amount of total hydrolysable N due to cropping was noted and the amount of decrease was less in the N-fertilized than the unfertilized soil. N-fertilization resulted in an increase in dry matter yield and N-uptake by the crop.
