Von Dezember 2004 bis Februar 2005 fand die Fahrt SO181 der FS SONNE als Teil des TIPTEQ-Projektes (from the Incoming Plate to mega-Thrust EarthQuake processes) in Südchile statt, um diverse geophysikalische und geologische Daten von der Subduktionszone zwischen 35°S und 48°S zu sammeln. Hier treffen die ozeanische Nazea-Platte, die ozeanische Antarktische Platte und die kontinentale Südamerikanische Platte an der Chile Triple Junction aufeinander, wo südlich davon das aktive Spreizungszentrum subduziert.
