Abstract:
Ceramide, an N-acyl derivative of sphingosine bases, has been isolated for the first time from bovine milk in the free form and its constitution studied. Sixteen component fatty acids were found, among which C 23:0 (38·1%), C 24:0 (29·5%), C 22:0 (17·9%) and C 16:0 (7·2%) were predominant. Seven component long-chain bases were detected. The principal bases were C 18 -sphingosine (35·0%) and C 16 -sphingosine (31·6%).
