Abstract Permeabilized cells of Desulfovibrio baarsii catalyzed an isotopic exchange between 14CO and the carboxyl group of acetyl-CoA and an isotopic exchange between 14CO2 and the carboxyl group of acetyl-CoA. Cyanide, which inactivated the carbon monoxide dehydrogenase activity present in the cells, inhibited the 14CO2/acetyl-CoA rather than the 14CO/acetyl-CoA exchange reaction.
