Notes: Reactions of Ga2Br4 · 2 Dioxane with (Trimethylsilyl)methyllithium and Neopentyllithium  -  Synthesis and Molecular Structure of Lithium Tetraalkylgallanates(III) with Li-C-Ga BridgesGa2Br4 · 2 dioxane reacts with (trimethylsilyl)methyllithium or neopentyllithium to yield in n-pentane/diethyl ether solution besides elemental gallium exclusively the disproportionation product trialkylgallane. In pure n-pentane the dioxane adducts of the corresponding lithium tetraalkylgallantes (R = —CH2SiMe3 2; R = —CH2CMe3 4) are formed. 2 and 4 are also synthesized by the reaction of GaBr3 with alkyl lithium in the molar ratio 1:4. The crystal structure of 2 shows a dioxane-bridged dimer and Li-C-Ga bridges with lithium probably bound by the C-H s̰-bonds of the central carbon atoms.

Notes: Bis[bis(trimethylsilyl)methyl]gallium Bromide and Monomeric {Bis[bis(trimethylsilyl]methyl]gallium} [Tris(trimethylsilyl)silyl]telluride [(Me3Si)2CH]2Ga-TeSi(SiMe3)3Bis[bis(trimethylsilyl)methyl]gallium bromide GaBr[CH(SiMe3)2]2 (4), prepared from Ga2Br4 · 2 dioxane and bis(trimethylsilyl)-methyllithium in the molar ratio of 1:3, reacts with the sterically high-shielded lithium tris(trimethylsilyl)silyltelluride · DME to yield [(Me3Si)2CH]2Ga-TeSi(SiMe3)3 (5). 5 can also be synthesized by a metathetic reaction between tetrakis-[bis(trimethylsilyl)methyl]digallium(4) and bis[tris(trimethylsilyl)silyl]ditellane in toluene at 100°C. A crystal structure determination shows the compound to be monomeric in the solid state and the atoms of the central C2Ga-TeSi moiety to lie in the mirror plane of the molecule. The short Ga-Te distance of 253.5(1) pm as well as a hindered rotation (ΔErot ≍ 50 kJ · mol-1) as detected by NMR measurements might be interpreted in terms of a π interaction between gallium and tellurium.

Notes: 1-Sila-3-alumina-4-aluminatacyclopentane with an Al-Al Bond and a C2Al2Si HeterocycleTetrakis[bis(trimethylsilyl)methyl]dialuminium(4) (1) with an aluminium-aluminium bond reacts in the presence of tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA) with the sterically highly shielded bases bis(trimethylsilyl)methyllithium or bis(dimethylphosphanyl)methyllithium to yield under deprotonation of a methyl group a carbanionic species, which is stabilized by an interaction with one of the coordinatively unsaturated Al atoms. The five-membered heterocycle 5 is formed containing two Al, one Si and two C atoms. The Al-Al bond remains uncleaved. Interestingly, 5 crystallizes in different crystals with and without crystal ether, which were both characterized by crystal-structure determinations. The Al-Al bond length in 5 [264.1(2) and 266.5(3) pm, respectively] is only slightly changed in comparison to the neutral starting compound 1 (266.0 pm). Under similar conditions the sterically less demanding ethyllithium leads to a β-elimination and addition of the thereby formed LiH to one of the two Al atoms to give the recently published hydridodialuminate(5) Li(TMEDA)2+ [R2Al-AlHR2]- (2).

Notes: Reactions of R2Al—AlR2 (R = CH(SiMe3)2) with Trimethylsilyl Azide  -  Insertion into the Al—Al Bond and Formation of a Trimeric Dialkylaluminium AzideTetrakis[bis(trimethylsilyl)methyl]dialuminium(4) (1) reacts with trimethylsilyl azide under insertion of one nitrogen atom into the Al—Al bond. As shown by NMR spectra and crystal structure the product contains three and four coordinated Al atoms due to the coordination of the α-nitrogen atom of the azide group to one of the Al atoms. An electronically delocalized N3-system is formed with a N—N bond length of 132.0 pm and a bond order of 1.5 for both N—N bonds. With an excess of trimethylsilyl azide further reaction is observed only under mild irradiation conditions with an exchange of the azide group between Si and Al and formation of Me6Si2 and the dialkylaluminium azide 3, which is better synthesized by the reaction of Me3Si—N3 with Cl—Al[CH(SiMe3)2]2. The sterically highly shielded aluminium azide 3 is a trimer in the solid state showing a non-planar 12-membered Al3N9 heterocycle with short N—N bonds (114 pm).

Notes: Tetrakis[bis(trimethylsilyl)methyl]digallane (4) 1 reacts with 1,3-diphenyltriazene to yield two compounds, which were both characterized by a crystal structure determination. The gallium-gallium bond is retained in the yellow derivate [(H5C6)2N3](R)Ga-Ga(R)[N3(C6H5)2 2 [R = CH(SiMe3)2], which is formed by a ligand exchange reaction and shows two terminal chelating triazenido ligands besides two bis(trimethylsilyl)methyl groups; the Ga—Ga bond length is 245.79(6) pm. The second product is the orange dialkyl(diphenyltriazenido)gallium derivative R2Ga[N3(C6H5)2] 3, where the triazene has reacted as an oxidant by the cleavage of the Ga—Ga bond and probably by release of elemental hydrogen.

Notes: Tetraalkylhydrido-and Tetraalkylmethyldialuminate(5) with Aluminium - Aluminium Bond: [R2Al - AlXR2]- {R=CH(SiMe3)2; X=H, Me}Tetrakis[bis(trimethylsilyl)methyl]dialuminium(4) (1) with an aluminium - aluminium bond reacts with tert1-butyllithium in the presence of the chelating tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA) to give a hydridodialuminate(5) 2 [R2Al - AlHR2]- {R=CH(SiMe3)2} by β1-elimination and addition of the hydride anion to one aluminium atom. By treatment of 1 with methyllithium a similar product is formed containing a methyl group bound to aluminium: [R2A1 - AlMeR2]- 3. As shown by crystal structure determination the aluminium - aluminium bond of both molecules is not bridged. Instead, the compounds contain a saturated, four-coordinated aluminium neighbouring an unsaturated, threefold coordinated aluminium atom. While in the hydrogen compound 2 the aluminium - aluminium bond length [266.7(3) pm] remains unaffected in comparison to the neutral starting compound 1, it is lengthened in the methyl derivative 3 by 9 pm to 275.2(3) pm probably due to the higher sterical demand of the methyl group.

Notes: tetrahedra-Tetrakis[tris(trimethylsilyl)methyl]tetraindane(4) (1) reacts with octacarbonyldicobalt to yield two products, depending on the stoichiometric ratio of the starting compounds: By replacement of one bridging carbonyl group a dicobalt monoindium derivative 2 is formed, which contains a Co—Co bond [256.81(5) pm] bridged by one carbonyl and one monoalkylindium group. While 2 is a monomer in benzene solutions, it dimerizes in the solid state by an interaction of the oxygen atom of the bridging carbonyl group to the coordinatively unsaturated In atom of a second molecule across a center of symmetry. Another compound (3) is formed by the replacement of both bridging carbonyl ligands, which exhibits a strongly distorted Co2In2 tetrahedron with normal Co—In bond lengths of 253.44(6) pm, but long Co—Co [280.14(6) pm] and In—In distances [336.18(6) pm].

Notes: Tetrakis[bis(trimethylsilyl)methyl]digallane(4) (1) reacts with tert-butyl or aryl=isocyanides [aryl = phenyl, o-methylphenyl, o-methoxyphenyl, p-methoxyphenyl) by a twofold insertion of the central carbon atoms into the Ga-Ga bond and formation of C-C single bonds. 1,4-Diazabutadiene derivatives bound to two R2Ga groups are formed (2-6), which in contrast to an aluminium analog exhibit only weak interactions between the imine nitrogen atoms and the coordinatively unsaturated gallium atoms as indicated by NMR spectroscopy and the long Ga-N distances in the molecular structures of three products: 2 (R = C6H5), 4 (R = o-MeOC6H4), and 6 (R = CMe3).
