    Beschreibung: This dataset comprises new data and previously published data on marine lipid biomarkers (brassicasterol, dinosterol, C37 alkenones, and the sum of them [∑PB]) in surface suspended particles at 334 stations from seven cruises between 2010 and 2015, and in surface sediments at 258 stations from eight cruises between 2006 and 2012 in the eastern China marginal seas (ECMS). Of all marine lipid biomarker data, 107 surface suspended particle samples were newly measured, with 227 surface suspended particle samples and 258 sediment samples previously published. We also provide the following oceanographic data, most of which were collected from published results (as described in the publication): sea surface temperature (SST, n = 273, from five cruises in summer of 2010–2015), salinity (n = 273, from five cruises in summer of 2010–2015), nutrient concentrations (dissolved inorganic nitrogen [DIN], dissolved inorganic phosphorus [DIP] and silicate [Si]) (n = 133, from three cruises in summer of 2011 and 2015) and Chl a (chlorophyll a, n = 229, from five cruises in summer of 2010–2014) in the surface water, as well as terrestrial biomarker [∑(C27 + C29 + C31) n-alkanes] contents (n = 226), TOC (total organic carbon content, n = 200), δ13CTOC (stable carbon isotope values for TOC, n=269), and sedimentation rate (n = 220) in surface sediments. Some data were measured using in situ CTD instrument in this study: sea surface temperature and salinity in the East China Sea in June 2010 and July 2013 (n = 54), and Chl a in the Changjiang River Estuary in August 2015 (n = 33). The contents of ∑(C27 + C29 + C31) n-alkanes in the southern Yellow Sea in April 2012 (n = 32) were also newly measured. The surface suspended particle samples were obtained by filtering on Whatman GF/F filters, and the surface sediments were collected by multiple corers or stainless-steel grab samplers. Marine and terrestrial lipid biomarkers were analyzed by gas chromatograph (Agilent 6890N) according to the method in Zhao et al. 2006 (doi: 10.1016/j.orggeochem.2005.08.022) and Wu et al. 2016 (doi: 10.1002/2015JG003167). The study resulting from this analysis has been published in Frontiers in Marine Science (doi:10.3389/fmars.2022.824181).

    Beschreibung: Continental margin ecosystems in the western North Pacific Ocean are subject to strong climate forcing and anthropogenic impacts. To evaluate mechanisms controlling phytoplankton biomass and community structure variations in marginal sea‐open ocean boundary regions, brassicasterol, dinosterol and C37 alkenones were measured in suspended particles in summer and autumn from 2012 to 2013 in the northeastern East China Sea and the western Tsushima Strait (NEECS‐WTS). In summer, the concentrations of brassicasterol (40 ‐ 1535 ng L‐1) and dinosterol (4.2 ‐ 94 ng L‐1) were higher in the southwest of Cheju Island, while C37 alkenones (0 ‐ 30 ng L‐1) were higher in the south of Cheju Island. In autumn, brassicasterol (12 ‐ 106 ng L‐1), dinosterol (2.4 ‐ 21 ng L‐1) and C37 alkenones (0.7 – 7.0 ng L‐1) were higher in the southwest of Cheju Island and the WTS, and higher C37 alkenones also occurred in the Okinawa Trough. Correlation analysis of biomarkers and environmental conditions (temperature, salinity and inorganic nutrient concentrations) clearly demonstrated that phytoplankton biomass and community structure variations can be well elucidated by water masses as indexed by temperature and salinity. High nutrients from the Changjiang River were the main cause of high biomass in summer, while nutrients from subsurface water were likely the key factor regulating phytoplankton biomass in open ocean water stations in autumn. This study indicates that mechanisms controlling phytoplankton biomass in marginal sea‐open ocean boundary regions should be classified by various water masses with different nutrient concentrations, instead of by geography.

    Beschreibung: Lipids, in their function as trophic markers in food webs and organic matter source indicators in the water column and sediments, provide a tool for reconstructing the complexity of global change effects on aquatic ecosystems. It remains unclear how ongoing changes in multiple environmental drivers affect the production of key lipid biomarkers in marine phytoplankton. Here, we tested the responses of sterols, alkenones and fatty acids (FAs) in the diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum, the cryptophyte Rhodomonas sp. and the haptophyte Emiliania huxleyi under a full-factorial combination of three temperatures (12, 18 and 24 ∘C), three N : P supply ratios (molar ratios 10 : 1, 24 : 1 and 63 : 1) and two pCO2 levels (560 and 2400 µatm) in semicontinuous culturing experiments. Overall, N and P deficiency had a stronger effect on per-cell contents of sterols, alkenones and FAs than warming and enhanced pCO2. Specifically, P deficiency caused an overall increase in biomarker production in most cases, while N deficiency, warming and high pCO2 caused nonsystematic changes. Under future ocean scenarios, we predict an overall decrease in carbon-normalized contents of sterols and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in E. huxleyi and P. tricornutum and a decrease in sterols but an increase in PUFAs in Rhodomonas sp. Variable contents of lipid biomarkers indicate a diverse carbon allocation between marine phytoplankton species in response to changing environments. Thus, it is necessary to consider the changes in key lipids and their consequences for food-web dynamics and biogeochemical cycles, when predicting the influence of global change on marine ecosystems.

    Beschreibung: Ocean-related global change has strongly affected the competition between key marine phytoplankton groups, such as diatoms and dinoflagellates, especially with the deleterious consequency of the increasing occurrence of harmful algal blooms. The dominance of diatoms generally shifts toward that of dinoflagellates in response to increasing temperature and reduced nutrient availability; however, contradictory findings have also been observed in certain sea areas. A key challenge in ecology and biogeochemistry is to quantitatively determine the effects of multiple environmental factors on the diatom-dinoflagellate community and the related changes in elemental and biochemical composition. Here, we test the interplay between temperature, nutrient concentrations and their ratios on marine diatom-dinoflagellate competition and chemical composition using bi-algal competition experiments. The ubiquitous diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum and dinoflagellate Prorocentrum minimum were cultivated semi-continuously, provided with different N and P concentrations (three different levels) and ratios (10:1, 24:1, and 63:1 molar ratios) under three temperatures (12, 18, and 24°C). The responses of diatom-dinoflagellate competition were analyzed by a Lotka-Volterra model and quantified by generalized linear mixed models (GLMMs) and generalized additive models (GAMs). The changes in nutrient concentrations significantly affected diatom-dinoflagellate competition, causing a competitive superiority of the diatoms at high nutrient concentrations, independent of temperature and N:P supply ratios. Interestingly, the effect amplitude of nutrient concentrations varied with different temperatures, showing a switch back toward a competitive superiority of the dinoflagellates at the highest temperature and at very high nutrient concentrations. The ratios of particulate organic nitrogen to phosphorus showed significant negative correlations with increasing diatoms/dinoflagellates ratios, while lipid biomarkers (fatty acids and sterols) correlated positively with increasing diatoms/dinoflagellates ratios over the entire ranges of temperature, N and P concentrations and N:P ratios. Our results indicate that the integration of phytoplankton community structure and chemical composition provides an important step forward to quantitatively understand and predict how phytoplankton community changes affect ecosystem functions and biogeochemical cycles in the ocean.

    Beschreibung: Well-dispersed carbon-doped ZnSn(OH) 6 submicrocubes were successfully synthesized through a facile and economical hydrothermal method at 433K, which used green chemical glucose (C 6 H 12 O 6 ) as the carbon-doping source. Photocatalytic activity of the as-synthesized C-doped ZnSn(OH) 6 was evaluated by studying photocatalytic decomposition of methylene blue (MB) in aqueous solution under visible light irradiation(≥ 400 nm). The results show that carbon-doped ZnSn(OH) 6 photocatalysts exhibited higher photocatalytic performance as compared to pure ZnSn(OH) 6 . 1.0 wt% C-doped ZnSn(OH) 6 photocatalyst exhibited obviously higher photocatalytic activity that of pure ZnSn(OH) 6 or other C-ZnSn(OH) 6 catalysts under the same condition. The enhanced photocatalytic degradation of MB could be attributed to the doping of carbon and the possible mechanism for high photocatalytic activity of C-doped ZnSn(OH) 6 was discussed. C-doped ZnSn(OH) 6 can significantly enhance absorption activity in UV light (λ ≥ 400 nm) region in comparision to un-doped ZnSn(OH) 6 . The results show the effects of the amount of doped carbon on photocatalytic efficiency of ZnSn(OH) 6 . Obviously, C-ZnSn(OH) 6 with 1.0 wt% of carbon for MB exhibited the highest catalytic activities and the most efficient photocatalytic properties for the reduction of MB. The possible mechanism for high photocatalytic activity of C-doped ZnSn(OH) 6 was discussed in this paper.

    Beschreibung: Background: Foxtail millet (Setaria italica (L.) Beauv.) is an important gramineous grain-food and forage crop. It is grown worldwide for human and livestock consumption. Its small genome and diploid nature have led to foxtail millet fast becoming a novel model for investigating plant architecture, drought tolerance and C4 photosynthesis of grain and bioenergy crops. Therefore, cost-effective, reliable and highly polymorphic molecular markers covering the entire genome are required for diversity, mapping and functional genomics studies in this model species.Result: A total of 5,020 highly repetitive microsatellite motifs were isolated from the released genome of the genotype 'Yugu1' by sequence scanning. Based on sequence comparison between S. italica and S. viridis, a set of 788 SSR primer pairs were designed. Of these primers, 733 produced reproducible amplicons and were polymorphic among 28 Setaria genotypes selected from diverse geographical locations. The number of alleles detected by these SSR markers ranged from 2 to 16, with an average polymorphism information content of 0.67. The result obtained by neighbor-joining cluster analysis of 28 Setaria genotypes, based on Nei's genetic distance of the SSR data, showed that these SSR markers are highly polymorphic and effective. Conclusions: A large set of highly polymorphic SSR markers were successfully and efficiently developed based on genomic sequence comparison between different genotypes of the genus Setaria. The large number of new SSR markers and their placement on the physical map represent a valuable resource for studying diversity, constructing genetic maps, functional gene mapping, QTL exploration and molecular breeding in foxtail millet and its closely related species.

    Beschreibung: Radium and radon mass balance models have been widely used to quantify submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) in the coastal areas. However, the losses of radium or radon in seawater caused by re-circulated saline groundwater discharge (RSGD) are ignored in most of the previous studies for tracer-based models and this can lead to an underestimation of SGD. Here, we present an improved method which considers the losses of tracers caused by RSGD to enhance accuracy in estimating SGD and SGD-associated material loadings. Theoretical analysis indicates that neglecting the losses of tracers induced by RSGD would underestimate the SGD by a percentage approximately equaling the tracer activity ratio of nearshore seawater to groundwater. The data analysis of previous typical case studies shows that the existing old models underestimated the SGD by 1.9 ∼ 93%, with an average of 32.2%. The method is applied in Jiaozhou Bay (JZB), North China, which is experiencing significant environmental pollution. The SGD flux into JZB estimated by the improved method is ∼1.44 and 1.34 times of that estimated by the old method for 226 Ra mass balance model and 228 Ra mass balance model, respectively. Both SGD and RSGD fluxes are significantly higher than the discharge rate of Dagu River (the largest one running into JZB). The fluxes of nutrients and metals through SGD are comparable to or even higher than those from local rivers, which indicates that SGD is an important source of chemicals into JZB and has important impact on marine ecological system.
