    Notes: Summary The region of the E. coli chromosome that contains the replication terminus has not previously been spanned by P1 cotransduction. We have used Tn5, Tn9 and Tn10 transposons inserted in this region as genetic markers, and have constructed a genetic map that extends from fnr (min 29.3) to manA (min 35.7). The relevant transposons that have been mapped in this region and which are described in this report are trgl::Tn5 (min 31.1), zdc-235::Tn10 (min 32.3), zdd-230::Tn9 (min 33.3), and zde-234::Tn10 (min 34.2). The size of this region as determined by P1 cotransduction is very similar to previous estimates obtained by bacterial conjugation.

    Notes: Summary Field experiments over two years were conducted on four fields with two respectively three soil types of different rooting depth to study the relationships between EUF-N fractions in the topsoil on the one hand and grain yield and N removal by different cereal crops on the other. The following results were obtained: A highly significant positive correlation was found to exist between N removal and ΦEUF-N contents in the topsoil measured in the summer prior to the beginning of the experiment. In both experimental years a close correlation was observed between grain yields of cereals and ΦEUF-N contents in the topsoil. The close relationship is due to ΦEUF-N contents in the topsoil being closely correlated with the readily available water capacity of the rooted soil volume. These results indicate the adequacy of a ΦEUF-N content as an index of the yield potential of a site which could be of practical significance in soil analysis.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper, we show that the rate of ozone loss in both polar and mid-latitudes, derived from ozonesonde and satellite data, has almost the same vertical distribution (although opposite sense) to that of ozone laminae abundance. Ozone laminae appear in the lower stratosphere soon after the polar vortex is established in autumn, increase in number throughout the winter and reach a maximum abundance in late winter or spring. We indicate a possible coupling between mid-winter, sudden stratospheric warmings (when the vortex is weakened or disrupted) and the abundance of ozone laminae using a 23-year record of ozonesonde data from the World Ozone Data Center in Canada combined with monthly-mean January polar temperatures at 30 hPa. Results are presented from an experiment conducted during the winter of 1994/95, in phase II of the Second European Stratospheric And Mid-latitude Experiment (SESAME), in which 93 ozone-enhanced laminae of polar origin observed by ozonesondes at different time and locations are linked by diabatic trajectories, enabling them to be probed twice or more. It is shown that, in general, ozone concentrations inside laminae fall progressively with time, mixing irreversibly with mid-latitude air on time-scales of a few weeks. A particular set of laminae which advected across Europe during mid February 1995 are examined in detail. These laminae were observed almost simultaneously at seven ozonesonde stations, providing information on their spatial scales. The development of these laminae has been modelled using the Contour Advection algorithm of Norton (1994), adding support to the concept that many laminae are extrusions of vortex air. Finally, a photochemical trajectory model is used to show that, if the air in the laminae is chemically activated, it will impact on mid-latitude ozone concentrations. An estimate is made of the potential number of ozone molecules lost each winter via this mechanism.

    Notes: Abstract The chemically induced ozone loss inside the Arctic vortex during the winter 1994/95 has been quantified by coordinated launches of over 1000 ozonesondes from 35 stations within the Match 94/95 campaign. Trajectory calculations, which allow diabatic heating or cooling, were used to trigger the balloon launches so that the ozone concentrations in a large number of air parcels are each measured twice a few days apart. The difference in ozone concentration is calculated for each pair and is interpreted as a change caused by chemistry. The data analysis has been carried out for January to March between 370 K and 600 K potential temperature. Ozone loss along these trajectories occurred exclusively during sunlit periods, and the periods of ozone loss coincided with, but slightly lagged, periods where stratospheric temperatures were low enough for polar stratospheric clouds to exist. Two clearly separated periods of ozone loss show up. Ozone loss rates first peaked in late January with a maximum value of 53 ppbv per day (1.6 % per day) at 475 K and faster losses higher up. Then, in mid-March ozone loss rates at 475 K reached 34 ppbv per day (1.3 % per day), faster losses were observed lower down and no ozone loss was found above 480 K during that period. The ozone loss in hypothetical air parcels with average diabetic descent rates has been integrated to give an accumulated loss through the winter. The most severe depletion of 2.0 ppmv (60 %) took place in air that was at 515 K on 1 January and at 450 K on 20 March. Vertical integration over the levels from 370 K to 600 K gives a column loss rate, which reached a maximum value of 2.7 Dobson Units per day in mid-March. The accumulated column loss between 1 January and 31 March was found to be 127 DU (∼36 %).

    Notes: Summary In field experiments on soils of different rooting density and different yield potential relationships between P uptake and root penetration of the soil, respectively, EUF-P contents in the topsoil were studied. On soils under uniform climatic and management conditions yields increased with increasing total root length in the subsoil (30–100 cm depth), while a negative correlation was found to exist between yields and total root length in the topsoil (0–30 cm). P removal was significantly correlated with the readily available water capacity of the rooted soil volume, which indicates the yield potential of a soil. There was no significant correlation between EUF-P contents of the soils and the P contents of the plants, but P contents in plant dry matter was significantly correlated with rooting density in the topsoil. Considering the effect on P contents of both EUF-P content in the topsoil and rooting density, the correlation coefficient was increased.

    Notes: Composite surfaces before and after pretreatment for adhesive bonding have been examined by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and the extent of transfer of release agents or other contaminants from release agents, which also were analysed by XPS, was estimated. Composite surfaces were examined also by optically stimulated electron emission (OSEE). Surface analyses were correlated with the strengths of adhesive bonded joints. OSEE shows promise as a non-destructive method for determining the bondability of epoxy resin matrix composites.

    Notes: Ultraviolet radiation activates the expression of a wide variety of genes, by pathways which differ between the short non-solar ultraviolet C (UVC) wavelengths, which are strongly absorbed by nucleic acids, and the long solar ultraviolet A (UVA, 320-380 nm) wavelengths, which generate active oxygen intermediates. Intermediate solar ultraviolet (UV) wavelengths in the UVB (290-320 nm) range also contain an oxidative component, but more closely resemble UVC in their gene activating properties. Short wavelength UV, in common with other extracellular stimuli including growth factors, activates signal transduction events that involve both stress- and mitogen-activated protein kinase cascades. The extrapolation of the complex modulation of gene expression that ensues to the consequences of natural UV exposure requires careful attention to the details of doses and wavelength employed in the model experiments. Nevertheless, there is evidence that UVB irrradiation of skin can activate the expression of proteins including immunomodulating cytokines, ornithine decarboxylase and, to a limited extent, nuclear oncogene products, as well as lead to stabilisation of p53. Non-cytotoxic doses of UVA radiation also lead to the strong activation of several genes which would be expected to have functional relevance in vivo.

    Description: Most of the short-lived biogenic and anthropogenic chemical species that are emitted into the atmosphere break down efficiently by reaction with OH and do not reach the stratosphere. Here we show the existence of a pronounced minimum in the tropospheric column of ozone over the West Pacific, the main source region for stratospheric air, and suggest a corresponding minimum of the tropospheric column of OH. This has the potential to amplify the impact of surface emissions on the stratospheric composition compared to the impact when assuming globally uniform OH conditions. Specifically, the role of emissions of biogenic halogenated species for the stratospheric halogen budget and the role of increasing emissions of SO2 in Southeast Asia or from minor volcanic eruptions for the increasing stratospheric aerosol loading need to be reassessed in light of these findings. This is also important since climate change will further modify OH abundances and emissions of halogenated species. Our study is based on ozone sonde measurements carried out during the TransBrom cruise with the RV Sonne roughly along 140-150 degrees E in October 2009 and corroborating ozone and OH measurements from satellites, aircraft campaigns and FTIR instruments. Model calculations with the GEOS-Chem Chemistry and Transport Model (CTM) and the ATLAS CTM are used to simulate the tropospheric OH distribution over the West Pacific and the transport pathways to the stratosphere. The potential effect of the OH minimum on species transported into the stratosphere is shown via modeling the transport and chemistry of CH2Br2 and SO2.
