    Notes: The composition of the intact wax esters of Calanus hyperboreus, C. finmarchicus, and C. glacialis from the Fram Strait area of the Greenland Sea was studied. In addition the fatty acid and alcohol composition of the wax esters was analysed. All copepods were rich in wax esters, especially C. hyperboreus in which long-chain wax esters were generally more abundant than in the other species.The wax ester composition was species dependent but strongly overlapped by spatial variabilities. Because phytoplankton fatty acids were partially incorporated directly into wax esters, the composition of the wax esters was widely influenced by the phytoplankton community which itself varied considerably in the Fram Strait region. Thus, the wax esters of the polar species, collected in the North East Water Polynya near Greenland, were dominated by diunsaturated compounds in the range from C32 to C44. The shorter chain components resulted from a combination of palmitoleic acid which is typical of diatom lipids with long-chain alcohols. In the marginal ice zone, higher levels of polyunsaturated wax esters were detected due to the presence of the 18:4 fatty acid, typical of a summer phytoplankton population.

    Notes: Abstract Lipid and fatty acid compositions of five notothenioid fishes from the Antarctic Weddell and Lazarev Seas were investigated in detail with regard to their different modes of life. The pelagic Aethotaxis mitopteryx was the lipid-richest species (mean of 61.4% of dry mass, DM) followed by Pleuragramma antarcticum (37.7%DM). The benthopelagic Trematomus lepidorhinus had an intermediate lipid content of 23.2%DM. The benthic Bathydraco marri (20.8%DM) and Dolloidraco longedorsalis (14.5%DM) belonged to the lipid-poorer species. Triacylglycerols were the major lipid class in all species. Important fatty acids were 16:0, 16:1(n-7), 18:1(n-9), 18:1(n-7), 20:5(n-3) and 22:6(n-3). The enhanced proportions of the long-chain monounsaturated fatty acids, 20:1 and 22:1, in the lipid-rich pelagic fishes clearly reflected the ingestion of the two copepod species, Calanoides acutus and Calanus propinquus, which are the only known Antarctic zooplankters rich in these fatty acids. Although wax esters are the major storage lipid in many prey species, they were absent in all notothenioid fishes studied. Thus, wax esters ingested with prey are probably converted to triacylglycerols via fatty acids or metabolised by the fishes. The enhanced lipid accumulation with increasingly pelagic lifestyle has energetic advantages, especially with regard to improved buoyancy. It is still unknown to what extent these lipids are utilised as energy reserves, since it has been suggested that not only the benthic but also the pelagic Antarctic fishes are rather sluggish, with a low scope for activity and hence low metabolic requirements.

    Notes: Summary During late spring, 1987, observations were made of nitrate and ammonium uptake in two regions of the Greenland Sea, the Arctic Front and the Polar Front. In the area of the Arctic Front, mixed layers were relatively deep (generally below 100m), and the 1% isolume averaged 35 m. Ambient nitrate concentrations were always greater than 6 μM, whereas ammonium levels were always less than 0.6 μM. Surface nitrate and ammonium specific uptake rates averages 4.4 and 2.3×10−3 h−1, respectively. The Polar Front generally coincided spatially with the location of the ice edge, and vertical mixed layers were shallow (pycnocline depth ranged from 8–14 m), and the 1 % isolume averaged 37 m. Nitrate concentrations were somewhat lower than in the Arctic Front, but remained above 3 μM at all times. Ammonium levels reached 1.2 μM. Nitrate and ammonium specific uptake rates at the surface averaged 4.8×10−3 and 10×10−3 h−1, respectively. Integrated water column f-ratios for the Arctic and Polar Front regions averaged 0.63 and 0.31, and the ammonium relative preference indices at all depths within each study area were always greater than 8, indicating that ammonium remained the preferred nitrogen source for phytoplankton. New production in the two regions was approximately equal, but the Polar Front had a substantially greater amount of regenerated production, and hence total production as well. Irradiance (and not nutrient concentration) seems to be the most important environmental factor in controlling nitrogen uptake. The spatial variability observed within the Greenland Sea suggest that inclusion of this region in global carbon models will require increased spatial resolution of both the models and the data included.

    Notes: Abstract The lipid and fatty acid compositions of microalgae were investigated in sea-ice and water samples from six different habitats of the Weddell Sea (Antarctica). All sea-ice samples and ice-associated water contained high algal biomass dominated by centric and pennate diatoms. Cells partially filled with oil droplets and resting spores were found. In the cells from the ice platelet layer triacylglycerols formed the largest component of the lipids. The fatty acid composition of sea-ice microalgae was dominated by the 16:1(n-7), 16:0, 18:1(n-9) and 20:5 (n-3) fatty acids. Except 18:1, they are typical for diatom fatty acids. These fatty acids were most abundant in pieces of first year ice with a brown colouration (“brown-ice”) and in the water column directly below sea-ice (sub-ice water). The small amounts of non-diatom acids, as 22:6 (n-3) and 18:4 (n-3), clearly showed that the sea-ice communities were not purely composed of diatoms. The most striking difference, in comparison to the general fatty acid composition of diatoms, was the high proportion of the 18:1 fatty acid in all samples, which might be caused by detrital material or lipid accumulation within cells and resting spores. In general, no clear adaptation of the fatty acid composition to the Antarctic and sea-ice environment was found. The fatty acid composition of the particulate matter from the water column was totally different from all other samples dominated by the saturated fatty acids 16:0 and 18:0.

    Notes: Abstract Ice cores were collected between 10.03.93 and 15.03.93 along a 200 m profile on a large ice floe in Fram Strait. The ice was typical of Arctic multi-year ice, having a mean thickness along the profile of 2.56 ±0.53 m. It consisted mostly of columnar ice (83%) grown through congelation of seawater at the ice bottom, and the salinity profiles were characterized by a linear increase from 0 psu at the top to values ranging between 3 and 5 psu at depth. Distributions of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and nitrogen (DON) and major nutrients were compared with ice texture, salinity and chlorophyll a. DOC, DON, dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), NH4 + and NO2 − were present in concentrations in excess of that predicted by dilution curves derived from Arctic surface water values. Only NO3 − was depleted, although not exhausted. High DOC and DON values in conjunction with high NH4 + levels indicated that a significant proportion of the dissolved organic matter (DOM) was a result of decomposition/grazing of ice algae and/or detritus. The combination of high NH4 + and NO2 − points to regeneration of nitrogen compounds. There was no significant correlation between DOC and Chl a in contrast to DON, which had a positively significant correlation with both salinity and Chl a, and the distribution of DOM in the cores might best be described as a combination of both physical and biological processes. There was no correlation between DOC and DON suggesting an uncoupling of DOC and DON dynamics in multi year ice.

    Description: More than 90% of the global ocean dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is refractory, has an average age of 4,000–6,000 years and a lifespan from months to millennia. The fraction of dissolved organic matter (DOM) that is resistant to degradation is a long-term buffer in the global carbon cycle but its chemical composition, structure, and biochemical formation and degradation mechanisms are still unresolved. We have compiled the most comprehensive molecular data set of 197 Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) analyses from solid-phase extracted marine DOM covering two major oceans, the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean and the East Atlantic Ocean (ranging from 50° N to 70° S). Molecular trends and radiocarbon dating of 34 DOM samples (comprising Δ14C values from -229 to -495‰) were combined to model an integrated degradation rate for bulk DOC resulting in a predicted age of 〉24 ka for the most persistent DOM fraction. First order kinetic degradation rates for 1,557 mass peaks indicate that numerous DOM molecules cycle on timescales much longer than the turnover of the bulk DOC pool (estimated residence times of 〉100 ka) and the range of validity of radiocarbon dating. Changes in elemental composition were determined by assigning molecular formulae to the detected mass peaks. The combination of residence times with molecular information enabled modelling of the average elemental composition of the slowest degrading fraction of the DOM pool. In our dataset, a group of 361 molecular formulae represented the most stable composition in the oceanic environment (“island of stability”). These most persistent compounds encompass only a narrow range of the elemental ratios H/C (average of 1.17 ± 0.13), and O/C (average of 0.52 ± 0.10) and molecular masses (360 ± 28 and 497 ± 51 Da). In the Weddell Sea DOC concentrations in the surface waters were low (46.3 ± 3.3 μM) while the organic radiocarbon was significantly more depleted than that of the East Atlantic, indicating average surface water DOM ages of 4,920 ± 180 a. These results are in accordance with a highly degraded DOM in the Weddell Sea surface water as also shown by the molecular degradation index IDEG obtained from FT-ICR MS data. Further, we identified 339 molecular formulae which probably contribute to an increased DOC concentration in the Southern Ocean and potentially reflect an accumulation or enhanced sequestration of refractory DOC in the Weddell Sea. These results will contribute to a better understanding of the persistent nature of marine DOM and its role as an oceanic carbon buffer in a changing climate.
