Notes: Abstract Using the atomic beam magnetic resonance method and using the technique of separated oscillatory fields in combination with the triple resonance method the ratiosg I /g J of the stable alkali isotopes Li, Na and K in the2S1/2-ground state have been measured at magnetic fields of about 3 kOe. Frequency shifts analogous to the Bloch-Siegert-shift, expected from theory, were observed and eliminated by extrapolation to vanishing rf-field strength. The results, uncorrected for atomic diamagnetism, are:6Li:g I /g J =−0.22356978(10)·10−3 7Li:g I /g J =−0.59042719(10)·10−3 23Na:g I /g J =−0.40184406(40)·10−3 39K:g I /g J =−0.07088613 (6)·10−3 41K:g I /g J =−0.03890837 (4)·10−3 Furthermore, the hyperfine structure splitting constants in the2 S 1/2-ground states have been determined. Using the most precise absoluteg J -values available so far one can calculate absolute values for the uncorrectedg I - factors. The results are:Δν/MHz −g I·103 6Li: 228.2052590(30) 0.4476540 (3)7Li: 803.5040866(10) 1.1822130 (6)23Na: 1771.6261288(10) 0.8046108 (8)39K: 461.7197202(14) 0.14193489(12)41K: 254.0138720(20) 0.07790600 (8) By comparing the absoluteg I - factors with measurements received by the NMR-method, the chemical shifts of the NMR-frequencies caused by the hydrate surrounding of the alkali ions in the NMR-probe are determined.

Notes: A theory is presented which describes coherent anti-Stokes resonance Raman scattering via continuum electronic states of diatomic molecules. It is applied to the dissociative continuum of the bounded B(3Π0+u) state and the continuum of the repulsive 1Π1u state of the iodine molecule. The theory allows numerical calculations of continuum resonance CARS spectra.

Notes: The construction of a cw CARS spectrometer is described, consisting of a single mode argon ion ring laser, an intra-cavity sample cell and a tunable dye laser. The argon laser was first stabilized to an iodine absorption line. From an evaluation of the CARS spectrum of the Q-branch of the rovibrational band of nitrogen, the vibration-rotation interaction constant is obtained as αe = 0.0173850 ± 0.0000035 cm-1, in agreement with Bensten's result from the linear Raman spectrum of the total band. Finally, the stabilization of the argon laser to a hyperfine component in the Doppler-free polarization spectrum of iodine is described.

Description: Vertical profiles of chlorophyll concentration and phytoplankton biomass at ALOHA (HOT) are analyzed for the time period 1988 to 2004. Two different methods are applied: in the standard approach the data are averaged over depth horizons and in the alternative approach the profiles are shifted to the depth of the deepest subsurface maximum before averaging. The results show that the latter is the only meaningful way to look at vertical distribution patterns of both chlorophyll and phytoplankton in the oligotrophic ocean. In particular, a pronounced subsurface maximum of phytoplankton biomass appears only if this depth-adjustment method is used. Otherwise the vertical displacement of the subsurface biomass due to changes in the subsurface light field masks the actual signal: the thickness of the subsurface maximum is overestimated and the maximum is reduced. The results of this study have far-reaching consequences for the interpretation of the large number of profiles of chlorophyll and phytoplankton in the oligotrophic ocean. The absence of a subsurface biomass maximum might not be necessarily a result of photoacclimation but of inadequate analyses combined with coarse vertical resolution

Description: Series of sensitivity tests were performed with a z-coordinate, global eddy-permitting (1/4°) ocean/sea-ice model (the ORCA-R025 model configuration developed for the DRAKKAR project) to carefully evaluate the impact of recent state-of-the-art numerical schemes on model solutions. The combination of an energy–enstrophy conserving (EEN) scheme for momentum advection with a partial step (PS) representation of the bottom topography yields significant improvements in the mean circulation. Well known biases in the representation of western boundary currents, such as in the Atlantic the detachment of the Gulf Stream, the path of the North Atlantic Current, the location of the Confluence, and the strength of the Zapiola Eddy in the south Atlantic, are partly corrected. Similar improvements are found in the Pacific, Indian, and Southern Oceans, and characteristics of the mean flow are generally much closer to observations. Comparisons with other state-of-the-art models show that the ORCA-R025 configuration generally performs better at similar resolution. In addition, the model solution is often comparable to solutions obtained at 1/6 or 1/10° resolution in some aspects concerning mean flow patterns and distribution of eddy kinetic energy. Although the reasons for these improvements are not analyzed in detail in this paper, evidence is shown that the combination of EEN with PS reduces numerical noise near the bottom, which is likely to affect current–topography interactions in a systematic way. We conclude that significant corrections of the mean biases presently seen in general circulation model solutions at eddy-permitting resolution can still be expected from the development of numerical methods, which represent an alternative to increasing resolution.
