Beschreibung: The granites are exposed at Dubair and Shang respectively in the north and south of Besham, northern Pakistan. The two exposures are very similar in terms of field features, petrographic details, petrogenetically important geochemical parameters and, more importantly, crystallization temperatures and ages. All this strongly suggests that granites at the two locations are co-genetic and represent two widely separated exposures of the same predominantly un-exposed large intrusion. The Dubair-Shang granites are mostly mega-porphyritic; however evenly fine grained massive and foliated to gneissose varieties also occur at places. The studied samples essentially consist of perthitic feldspar, plagioclase and quartz together with substantial quantities of biotite, minor to accessory amphibole, and accessory to trace amounts of ilmenite, apatite, epidote, titanite and zircon. The amphibole is ferro-edenite and ferro-pargasite while the biotite is markedly Fe-rich and thus approaches annite in composition. The Dubair-Shang granites are per-aluminous, magnesian to ferroan and alkali-calcic to alkalic in composition. Variations in major and trace element contents indicate evolution of the Dubair-Shang intrusion through magmatic differentiation involving early fractionation of amphibole, plagioclase, ilmenite and apatite at 850–890 °C temperature, 6–8 kb pressure and low fO2. The relatively higher amounts of SiO2, Th, U, ΣREE, greater LREE/HREE ratios, and higher negative Eu anomaly, lower average MgO, Fe2O3, CaO, TiO2, P2O5, Nb, Sr, Ba in the Shang than Dubair samples indicate that the exposure at Shang largely represents more evolved part of the intrusion. The chemical details of biotite and calcic amphibole, whole-rock major and trace element contents including both HFSE and LILE, higher ΣREE and general REE patterns and high magma temperature (averg. Zr Tsat = 834 ± 24 °C) all endorse A-type affinity of the granites and suggest their solidification from a largely crust-derived melt emplaced during Paleo-Proterozoic at 20−30 km depth in post-orogenic realm.

Notizen: We prove that the eigenvalues of the Laplacian on a sphere with a Dirichlet boundary condition specified on a segment of a great circle lie between an integer and a half-integer and for a Neumann boundary condition they lie between a half integer and an integer. These eigenvalues correspond to the eigenvalues of the angular part of the Laplacian with boundary conditions specified on a plane angular sector, which are relevant in the calculation of scattering amplitude. These eigenvalues can also be used to determine the behavior of the fields near the tip of a plane angular sector as a function of the distance to the tip. The first few eigenvalues for both Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions are calculated. The same eigenvalues are also calculated using the Wentzel–Kramers–Brillouin (WKB) method. There is excellent agreement between the exact and the WKB eigenvalues. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The effect of increasing fish loading (decreasing water exchange rate, while holding fish stocking density constant) on growth, survival and feed conversion ratio was determined for two size groups of the orange-spotted grouper Epinephelus coioides (Hamilton). Fingerlings (124.3–145.8 g initial body weight) and subadults (990.6–1147.1 g initial body weight) were reared in 1-m3 circular tanks for 14 weeks. For the fingerlings experiment, three loading rates of 0.5, 2 and 6 kg L−1 min−1 were used, while in the experiment with subadults, the loading rates were 1, 3 and 6 kg L−1 min−1. The mean growth rate of fingerlings ranged from 1.60 to 2.14 g fish−1 day−1, and survival was high (95–100%); however, there were no significant differences (P 〉 0.05) as a result of the different loading rates. Similar results were obtained in the subadults experiment, in which the growth rate (3.10–4.90 g fish−1 day−1) and survival (86.7–100%) were not significantly (P 〉 0.05) affected by the different loading rates. In both experiments, the feed conversion ratios were also not affected significantly by the loading rates. These results show that water exchange in aerated, flowthrough tanks can be reduced to as low as 6 kg L−1 min−1 without adversely affecting growth, survival and feed conversion of fingerling and subadult groupers.

Notizen: Background: Crohn's disease affects people world-wide, but the incidence in Asia is lower than in Western countries. This difference may be due to genetic and/or environmental factors. Three single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the NOD2/CARD15 gene have been identified to be independently associated with the development of Crohn's disease in Caucasians. Whether these SNPs are involved in the pathogenesis of Crohn's disease in the Chinese population is unknown.Aim: To determine if NOD2/CARD15 gene polymorphisms are found in Chinese patients with Crohn's disease. Methods: Sixty-five consecutive Chinese Crohn's disease patients had genotyping performed using sequence-specific PCR directed against the wild-type and the Arg702Trp, Gly908Arg and 3020insC variants of the NOD2/CARD15 gene. Controls consisted of 63 patients with ulcerative colitis and 70 patients with dyspepsia. Results: None of the patients with Crohn's disease had heterozygous or homozygous SNP variants. Similarly none of the ulcerative colitis or dyspeptic controls had these SNPs.Conclusion: The three previously described SNPs associated with the development of Crohn's disease in Caucasians are not found in Chinese patients with Crohn's disease.

Notizen: Recent epidemiological, clinical and molecular studies have provided strong evidence that inherited predisposition is important in the pathogenesis of chronic inflammatory bowel diseases. The model most consistent with the epidemiological data suggests that Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis are related polygenic diseases, sharing some but not all susceptibility genes. Investigators throughout the world have applied the complementary techniques of genome-wide scanning and candidate gene analysis. Four areas of linkage have been widely replicated on chromosomes 16 (IBD1), 12 (IBD2), 6 (IBD3—the HLA region), and most recently on chromosome 14. Fine mapping of these regions is underway. Of the ‘positional’ candidate genes, most attention has centred on the genes of the major histocompatibility complex. Genes within this region may determine disease susceptibility, behaviour, complications and response to therapy. Hope continues that studies of inflammatory bowel disease genetics will provide fresh insight into disease pathogenesis and soon deliver clinical applications.
