Notizen: The laser intensity modulation method (LIMM), developed by Lang in the early eighties, is a useful technique for determining the spatial polarization and/or space charge distributions in pyroelectric and/or piezoelectric materials, for instance in thin polymer electret films. The advantage of the LIMM is the high spatial resolution near the irradiated side. Therefore, we introduced the logarithmic spatial grid distribution into the deconvolution process. For the first time the self-consistency method developed by Honerkamp and Weese is applied to the deconvolution program with respect to LIMM. Using multilayer systems with known spatial distributions our new equipment is tested with regard to providing reasonable results as well as the deconvolution program to represent the known spatial distributions.

Notizen: We have recently shown that utilizing double frequency sweeps (DFSs) instead of pulses can lead to increased efficiencies in population and coherence transfer in half-integer quadrupolar spin systems. Cosine modulation of the carrier amplitude corresponds to the simultaneous irradiation of two frequencies symmetrically around the rf-carrier frequency. Convergent or divergent DFSs can be generated by appropriate time-dependent cosine modulation of the rf field. Population and coherence transfer induced by sweeping the modulation frequency through the quadrupolar satellite transitions is investigated in detail. The time dependence of such passages determines the adiabaticity of the transfer processes. Insight into the involved spin dynamics is of utmost importance in the design and optimization of experiments based on amplitude modulation, such as DFS enhanced multiple-quantum magic angle spanning, where multiple to single-quantum conversion is performed by a DFS. Vega and co-workers have provided a theoretical basis of adiabatic coherence transfer in spin-3/2 systems induced by the combined action of simple time independent cosine amplitude modulation (CAM) of the rf field and sample spinning [Madhu et al., J. Chem. Phys. 112, 2377 (2000)]. In our report we will extend this theory to DFS induced adiabatic transfer phenomena in spin-3/2 and spin-5/2 systems. A fully analytical description will be presented covering the whole adiabaticity range resulting in an accurate description of actual experiments. In this context it will be shown that both population and coherence transfer are governed by the same principles and one unique adiabaticity parameter for each pair of spectral satellites. The transfer phenomena derived for spin-3/2 systems will be studied and quantified experimentally for 23Na in a single crystal of NaNO3. In a static and spinning sample the combination with DFS and CAM irradiation will be studied showing the equivalence of the transfer in all these situations. Further we will demonstrate the greater flexibility of a DFS compared to a CAM pulse to manipulate the adiabaticity and thus to maximize the transfer efficiency. Finally, the 27Al resonance in an α-Al2O3 single crystal will be inspected to demonstrate that the efficiency of DFS-induced population and coherence transfer in spin-5/2 systems depends on the direction of the DFS. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Beschreibung: In late austral summer 1991 a cyclonic thermocline eddy was detected in the subtropical western South Atlantic off the Brazilian shelf near the city of Vitória. This Vitória eddy was tracked for 55 days by surface drifters drogued at 100-m depth. The drifters had been deployed in the western boundary current regime by FS Meteor as part of a basinwide surface current study. The analysis of a combined CTD/XBT section across the Vitória eddy, together with drifter data and satellite images of the thermal surface structure revealed the unexpected complexity of the region. The eddy interacted not only with the local topography and the Brazil Current, located farther offshore, but also with an extended upwelling regime north of Cabo Frio. The hydrographic and kinematic properties and anomalies of the Vitóia eddy are analyzed and compared with similar vortices described elsewhere in literature.

Beschreibung: The discovery of new active natural products is hampered by laborious purification processes that often end up to the re-isolation of known compounds. We demonstrate here that, spectral data reflecting concentration fluctuations of components can correlate statistically with measurable dose-dependent properties on the basis of a Heterocovariance approach deconvoluting the active components structure. Variance of extract constituents was achieved through statistically meaningful collections of plants from different families, genus, and species. This fluctuation was also obtained through the fractionation of a single plant extract by separation techniques. The NMR and HRMS spectra of the extracts and fractions were recorded, as well as their ability to inhibit tyrosinase or 5-lipoxygenase enzymes. Biological activity was statistically correlated with spectral data deciphering the active compounds through the Heterocovariance approach prior to any purification.
