Notes: Abstract Crystals of hydridodinitratobis(triphenylphosphine) iridium(III), IrH(NO3)2(PPh3)2, belong to the trigonal system, space groupP¯3e1, with hexagonal unit-cell dimensionsa = 16.33(1),c = 22.85(2) Å, andZ = 6. The six Ir atoms lie in special positions. Two (of molecule 1) have site symmetry 32 and four (of molecule 2) have site symmetry 3. Both types of molecule have trigonal bipyramidal coordination with phosphorus atoms axial but do not have sufficient nitrate groups (two instead of three) to satisfy the site symmetry. Thus both types of molecule have disordered nitrate groups and the mode of coordination appears to be somewhat different at the two sites.

Notes: Abstract A theory for the scattering of electrons by impurities in crystals is presented. It makes use of multiple scattering theory and the Bloch representation for crystal wave-functions, and thus has a straightforward relationship with the partial-wave analysis familiar from elementary quantum mechanics. Some discussion is then given of the problems of first principles calculations, and some mention made of the practical problems of fitting to experimental data.

Notes: Abstract The scattering formalism of Blaker and Harris which is appropriate to potential scattering in dilute cubic alloys is modified to include the spin-dependent scattering. An expression for the total T-matrix which describes the ordinary and exchange scattering by magnetic impurities is obtained. The new formalism is compared with other work in the area and is used to discuss the dHvA data for Kondo alloys based on Cu and Au.

Notes: Abstract A variety of detrital foods derived from marsh plants were fed to the copepods Eurycemora affinis and Scottolana canadensis. The copepods did not survive well or produce eggs when feeding on detritus with smaller amounts of microbiota, but did well when a rich and abundant microbiota was present. Ciliated protozoans appear to be particularly important in the transfer of detrital energy to copepods.

Notes: Abstract Accumulation of the bi-cyclic aromatic hydrocarbon 14C-1-naphthalene in adult female Calanus helgolandicus Claus and adult female Eurytemora affinis Poppe in sea water concentrations of hydrocarbon ranging from 0.2 to 992 μg/l was studied during exposure periods of up to 15 days as part of an investigation of the possible effects on marine zooplankton of persistent exposure to low levels of petroleum hydrocarbons. With both species the body levels of radioactivity increased rapidly during the first few days of the exposure period, but after exposure for 7 to 8 days to sea water containing 50 μg hydrocarbon/l an equilibrium condition was approached; in some experiments where E. affinis was exposed to 1.0 and 10 μg hydrocarbon/l for 15 days there was no further increase in body levels of radioactivity after 7 to 8 days. Using a low concentration of hydrocarbon (1 μg/l), the quantity of radioactivity accumulated after 10 days was found to be nearly fifty times greater in the smaller species, E. affinis, than in C. helgolandicus, when expressed in terms of body weight. After they had been exposed to the hydrocarbon for several days the copepods contained a considerable proportion of radioactivity that was no longer identifiable as naphthalene and was presumably present as metabolites. Radioactivity accumulated in the copepods after several days was rapidly lost after they were transferred to uncontaminated sea water: e.g. C. helgolandicus lost nearly 90% of its body level of radioactivity in 24 h. Thereafter the rate of loss was greatly reduced, and 5% of the original body level of radioactivity still remained in the copepods at the end of 11 days. Experiments on the breakdown of naphthalene added at low concentrations to sea water samples containing natural microbial populations indicated degradation rates of 0.1 to 0.2 μg/l/24 h in oceanic water, and 2.6 μg/l/24 h in inshore water samples. The results are discussed in terms of the possible transfer of hydrocarbon to a higher trophic level in areas subjected to constant low-level inputs of petroleum hydrocarbons.

Notes: Abstract There are few descriptions of the magnetic resonance (MR) appearance of hyperfunctioning adrenocortical tumours, particularly those occurring in childhood. We studied five patients, two girls and three boys, aged 6–14.3 years, presenting with clinical syndromes of adrenocortical hyperfunction. The diagnoses were Cushing's syndrome (n = 2) virilisation (n = 2) and Conn's syndrome (n = 1). Bio chemical features suggested an adrenal lesion in each case. MR and ultrasound were performed in all five cases, with CT in four. Each patient had a functional adrenal tumour secreting either cortisol, androgens or aldosterone alone, or a combination of cortisol, androgens and oestradiol. The histological diagnosis was adenoma in four cases and tumour of indeterminate nature in one case. MR clearly showed the tumours (diameter 1.0–7.5 cm), all the lesions being of high signal intensity relative to liver on T2-weighted sequences. CT revealed an adrenal mass in each of the four patients scanned, three of which enhanced after intravenous contrast medium injection. The multiplanar imaging of MR allowed better distinction from adjacent structures and also demonstrated an unenlarged contralateral adrenal gland. In the patient with a 1-cm Conn's adenoma the lesion was more easily seen on MR than CT. Ultrasound showed the four larger tumours but was unable to visualise the contralateral adrenal or the Conn's adenoma. In conclusion, the MR appearances of four adrenocortical adenomas and one indeterminate tumour in children are described. MR has been found to be at least equal to CT in the detection of these tumours, with some possible advantages. Both techniques are superior to ultrasound.

Notes: Abstract The Sacred Heart Hospice, Sydney, was founded in 1890 and is the largest inpatient palliative-care facility in Australia. Patients with advanced cancer form the predominant patient group, although patients with HIV/AIDS account for approximately 20% of admissions. A community-outreach service, established in 1983, cares for more patients at home than in the Hospice. Recently the Hospice has participated in a number of clinical trials and intends to become a regional centre for palliative-care research, education and training.

Notes: Abstract The effects of morphine, ketocyclazocine, cyclazocine, and SKF-10,047 were tested alone and in conjunction with naltrexone or naloxone, in rats responding under a multiple fixed-interval 3-min schedule of food presentation. Under this paradigm, electric shock was delivered on a fixed-ratio schedule for responses occurring during alternate schedule components. All of the drugs (except naltrexone and naloxone) decreased average rates of responding maintained by the unpunished component in a dose-dependent manner. The rate-decreasing effects of morphine and ketocyclazocine were antagonized by naltrexone. The rate-decreasing effects of cyclazocine were only slightly reversed by the antagonists, while those effects of SKF-10,047 were not affected by naltrexone. In some animals, certain doses of SKF-10,047 increased unpunished responding. This rate-increasing effect was antagonized by naltrexone. Morphine, ketocyclazocine, cyclazocine, and SKF-10,047 increased responding that was suppressed by electric shock, and these increases were antagonized by naltrexone and naloxone. Thus, the antagonism of opiate effects by narcotic antagonists depends in part on the behavior being evaluated.

Notes: Abstract Acquisition of a shock avoidance task was impaired in mice after cessation of chronic consumption of ethanol, tertiary-butanol (t-butanol), or pentobarbital. The drugs were administered in liquid diets for 7 days and avoidance behavior was impaired in a test 1 day after withdrawal of the drugs. The avoidance deficit was also observed 8 days after withdrawal from chronic pentobarbital. There was no apparent relationship between the avoidance deficit and physical dependence, as measured by a decrease in body temperature or convulsions on handling, since at 6 h after withdrawal only moderate withdrawal signs were seen in the mice consuming ethanol or t-butanol, and no withdrawal signs were seen in any of the mice at the time of avoidance testing. These results suggest that impairment of avoidance behavior after chronic exposure is a general effect of central nervous system depressants and, in the case of ethanol, is not due to the production of acetaldehyde.
