Notes: Abstract Asymmetric 75% and 95% area reduction, transparent Sylgard stenotic models were operated under internal carotid artery (ICA) (Womersley parameter, α=5.36, Remean=213 and 180, respectively, and Repeak=734 and 410, respectively) and left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) flow wave forms (α=2.65,Remean=59 and 57, respectively, and Repeak=137 and 94, respectively) to evaluate the effect of these conditions on particle residence times downstream of the stenoses. Amberlite particles (1.05 g/cm3, 400 μm) were added to the fluid to simulate platelets and their motion through the stenotic region and were traced using a laser light sheet flow visualization method with pseudo-color display. Two-dimensional (2D) particle motions were recorded and particle washout in the stenotic throat and downstream section were computed for all cases. All four model cases demonstrated jetting through the stenosis which followed an arching pattern around a large separation zone downstream. Considerable mixing was observed within these vortex regions during high flow phases. Particle washout profiles showed no clear trend between the degrees of stenosis although particles downstream of the stenoses tended to remain longer for LAD conditions. The critical washout cycle (1% of particles remaining downstream of the stenosis), however, was longer for the 95% stenoses cases under each flow condition due to the larger protected region immediately downstream and maximal for the LAD 95% case. Results of this study suggest that particle residence times downstream of 75% and 95% stenoses (~ 3–6 s for ICA and ~ 8–10 s for LAD) exceed the minimum time for platelet adhesion (~ 1 s) for at least 1% of cells and, thus, may be sufficient to initiate thrombus formation under resting conditions. © 1998 Biomedical Engineering Society. Notes: Abstract The mechanics of leukocyte [white blood cell (WBC)] deformation and adhesion to endothelial cells (EC) in shear flow has been investigated. Experimental data on transient WBC–EC adhesion were obtained from in vivo measurements. Microscopic images of WBC–EC contact during incipient WBC rolling revealed that for a given wall shear stress, the contact area increases with time as new bonds are formed at the leading edge, and then decreases with time as the trailing edge of the WBC membrane peels away from the EC. A two-dimensional model (2D) was developed consisting of an elastic ring adhered to a surface under fluid stresses. This ring represents an actin-rich WBC cortical layer and contains an incompressible fluid as the cell interior. All molecular bonds are modeled as elastic springs distributed in the WBC–EC contact region. Variations of the proportionality between wall shear stress (τ w ) in the vicinity of the WBC and the resulting drag force (F s ), i.e., Fs/τw, reveal its decrease with WBC deformation and increasing vessel channel height (2D). The computations also find that the peeling zone between adherent WBC and EC may account for less than 5% of the total contact interface. Computational studies describe the WBC–EC adhesion and the extent of WBC deformation during the adhesive process. © 1999 Biomedical Engineering Society. PAC99: 8717-d, 8719Tt, 8717Aa

Description: Forward osmosis is an attractive technique in water purification and desalination fields. Enhancement of the forward osmosis membrane performance is essential to the application of this technique. In this study, an optimized chemical post-treatment approach which was used to improve RO membrane performance was employed for enhancing water flux of thin film composite forward osmosis membrane. Home-made polysulfide-based forward osmosis membrane was prepared and nitric acid, sulfuric acid, ethanol, 2-propanol were employed as post-treatment solutions. After a short-term treatment, all the membrane samples manifested water flux enhancement compared with their untreated counterparts. Over 50% increase of water flux had been obtained by ethanol solution treatment. The swelling, changes of hydrophobicity and solvency in both active layer and substrate were verified as the major causes for the enhancement of the water flux. It is noted that the treatment time and solution concentration...

Description: XAL is a high level accelerator application framework that was originally developed by the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), Oak Ridge National Laboratory. It has an advanced design concept and has been adopted by many international accelerator laboratories. Adopting XAL for ADS is a key subject in the long term. This paper will present the modifications to the original XAL applications for ADS. The work includes a proper relational database schema modification in order to better suit the requirements of ADS configuration data, redesigning and re-implementing db2xal application, and modifying the virtual accelerator application. In addition, the new device types and new device attributes for ADS online modeling purpose are also described here.

Description: This paper focuses on literatures reviewing with key words of architectural and PM2.5 based on the China Academic Journal Network Publishing Database (CKNI) and Elsevier SD database. Statistical analysis on the searched 184 related literatures show the following results. (1) 20.6% of the all targeted literatures showed that PM2.5 concentration was one of the important impact parameters of indoor & outside air quality. (2) 16.3% of the literatures illustrated that the architecture designing contributed significantly to indoor and outdoor fine particulate pollution by controlling particle generation and diffusion. It can be concluded that the three-dimensional architectural design, the total layout of the building designing strategy and the architectural space design based on green building-oriented architectural designing concept will be the future focused research and the frontier question.

Description: This paper discusses the processing of desilting for silt of river and lake in order to improve the water quality. The technology system of multi-dimensional combination of trash sorting separation, separation of sand, silt amendment, silt concentration, silt flocculation, dehydration, solidification/stabilization and resource reuse are proposed. The average water content of the dehydrated silt is less than 45 percent in the practical project when the system was used. The dehydrated silt can be used for backfilling. The effect meets the expected demand. The given results provide valuable reference for the process and equipment of environmental desilting project.

Description: IHEP, China is constructing a 100 MeV/100 kW electron Linac for NSC KIPT, Ukraine. This linac will be used as the driver of a neutron source based on a subcritical assembly. In 2012, the injector part of the accelerator was pre-installed as a testing facility in the experimental hall #2 of IHEP. The injector beam and key hardware testing results met the design goal. Recently, the injector testing facility was disassembled and all of the components for the whole accelerator have been shipped to Ukraine from China by the ocean shipping. The installation of the whole machine in KIPT will be started in June, 2013. The construction progress, the design and testing results of the injector beam and key hardware are presented.
