    Abstract: Listeria monocytogenes is a foodborne pathogen that causes listeriosis and can be a problem in areas where meat products are sold at unregulated storage temperatures. In this work, the prevalence of L. monocytogenes was determined in the five most widely traded meat products in the province of Quevedo (Ecuador): bacon, “chorizo paisa”, grilled hamburger meat, mortadella, and salami. A total of 1000 samples of these products were analyzed in two seasons of the year (dry season/rainy season). All L. monocytogenes isolates were confirmed by PCR with primers designed for the iap gene. Furthermore, the positive samples were quantified for L. monocytogenes. Of the 1000 meat products analyzed, 163 were positive for L. monocytogenes (16.3%). The prevalence of L. monocytogenes in the two seasons in different meat products was as follows: 22.5% in mortadella, 19% in hamburger meat, 15% in bacon, 14.5% in chorizo paisa and 10.5% in salami. In addition, the concentration of L. monocytogenes in most of the positive samples was in the range of 4–6 log CFU/g or even higher. The results show the need for improvements in the hygienic measures and meat storage temperatures in Quevedo (Ecuador) to avoid risks of foodborne listeriosis.

    Abstract: The use of food additives (such as dyes, which improve the appearance of the products) has become more prominent, due to the rapid population growth and the increase in demand for beverages and processed foods. The dyes are usually found in effluents that are discharged into the environment without previous treatment; this promotes mass contamination and alters the aquatic environment. In recent years, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have proven to be effective technologies used for wastewater treatment through the destruction of the total organic content of toxic contaminants, including food dyes. Studies have shown that the introduction of catalysts in AOPs improve treatment efficiency (i.e., complete decomposition without secondary contamination). The present review offers a quick reference for researchers, regarding the treatment of wastewater containing food dyes and the different types of AOPs, with different catalyst and nanocatalyst materials obtained from traditional and green chemical syntheses.

    Abstract: This study aimed at investigating the potential impacts of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) exposure on the partial denitrification (PD) system. Our results indicated that nitrite accumulation rates were significantly decreased to 67.94 ± 1.25%–69.52 ± 3.13% after long-term PFOA exposure (0.5–20 mg/L), while the nitrate transformation ratio was slightly impacted. The PFOA removal efficiency gradually decreased from 67.42 ± 3.39% to 6.56 ± 5.25% with an increasing PFOA dosage, indicating that the main PFOA removal pathway was biosorption. The average EPS contents increased by two folds, which suggested that exposure to PFOA significantly stimulated EPS secretion. Excitation emission matrix analysis revealed that PFOA exposure promoted the secretion of tryptophan protein-like, humic acid-like, and aromatic protein II-like substances, which may act as a protective barrier against PFOA toxicity. Moreover, significant changes in characteristic peaks after PFOA exposure were shown as indicated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. High-throughput sequencing suggested that PFOA significantly decreased bacterial richness and increased evenness, indicating that toxicity effects of PFOA were more pronounced for abundant species (e.g., Thauera) than rare species. Thauera was the most dominant genus responsible for nitrite accumulation, whose abundance significantly decreased from 35.99 ± 2.67% to 18.60 ± 2.18% after PFOA exposure. In comparison, the abundances of common denitrifiers, such as Denitratisoma, Bdellovibrio, and OLB8, significantly increased, suggesting that these genera were potential PFOA-resistant bacteria. This study presents new insights into the effect of PFOA on a PD system.

    Abstract: Tagua shell is a material generated in the handcrafted jewelry industry, which is discarded since it does not have a specific use. The present study evaluates this material as an adsorbent for the removal of lead (II) in aqueous media. The adsorbent was characterized through the point of zero charge technique, X-ray microanalysis, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Tests were carried out in a static system using a lead (II) solution of 100 mg·L−1 to establish the process conditions, setting a pH of 5, an adsorbent dose of 1.8 g/100 mL, and a contact time of 60 min. The kinetic study performed showed that the experimental data had a better fit with the pseudo-second order model. The experimental equilibrium data were correlated using the Langmuir, Freundlich, Toth, Redlich–Peterson, and Sips models, of which the Langmuir and Sips models proved to be the best to represent the adsorption process due to the high coefficient of determination they presented at the different temperatures, being between 0.9629–0.9899 and 0.9819–0.9900, respectively. The maximum amount of lead adsorbed was 22.0348 mg·g−1 at a temperature of 298 K. Finally, the thermodynamics study indicated that the process is endothermic, spontaneous, and thermodynamically stable.

    Abstract: Zingiber officinale Roscoe is an herbal plant native to Asia that can be found in all tropical countries. It is used in folk medicine, food, and cosmetics. A chemical characterization and some agronomic experiments have been carried out on Z. officinale essential oil, showing promising findings for the biological control of fungal pathogens belonging to the genus Fusarium. The aim of this review is to collect and update the literature covering its phytochemistry and biological activities as a Fusarium spp. plant-based biocide. The present research was conducted using the following bibliographic databases: Scifinder, Pubmed, and Science Direct. Thirteen papers were selected based on the adopted criteria. Data were independently extracted by the three authors of this work, and the final article selections were completed in a manner that avoided the duplication of data. The main chemical compounds were α-zingiberene, geranial, and aryl-curcumene, but a remarkable difference was found concerning the chemical compositions. Z. officinale essential oil was shown to possess promising biological functions against Fusarium spp. These findings offer new research approaches and potential applications as a biocontrol ingredient for Z. officinale essential oil.

    Abstract: The presence of microplastics and nanoplastics (MNPs) in soils is becoming pervasive in most agroecosystems. The recent estimates suggest that the soil burden of MNPs in the agroecosystems is more than 0.5 megatons (Mt) annually. In all the agroecosystems, the transformation, migration, and transferring of MNPs, along with other contaminants, and the trophic transfer of MNPs can threaten the food web. MPs can exhibit negative and positive effects, or none, on the physical/chemical properties of soil, soil microbiota, invertebrates, and plant systems, depending on the polymer compositions, additives, and exposure time. Difficulties in comparing the studies on the effects of MNPs, as well as the discrepancies among them, are mostly due to variations in the methods followed for sampling, detection, quantification, and the categorization of particles, abundance, and exposure time. Since agricultural soils are important environmental reservoirs for diverse chemicals and contaminants, they provide milieus for several types of interactions of MNPs with soil biota. The present review critically examines the sources and transformation of MNPs in agricultural soils, the release and fate of additives, as well as their role as vectors of other potential contaminants and influence on soil physical/chemical properties, toxicities to soil biota (i.e., microorganisms, invertebrates, and plants), current regulatory guidelines for the mitigation of MNPs, and future research directions.
