Notizen: The effects of image potential due to dielectric mismatch on electronic and shallow donor impurity states in quasi-one-dimensional GaAs-Ga1−xAlxAs quantum-well wires with rectangular cross section for both finite barrier and infinitely high barrier are investigated. The results have shown that, when the image potential is included, the variations in electronic energy level and impurity binding energy are considerable, especially when the cross-section dimensions of the quantum wire become small. The results also showed that the effects of the impurity ion image potential on impurity binding energy are much larger than those of electron image potential.

Notizen: The convergence of large-order expansions in δ=1/D, where D is the dimensionality of coordinate space, for energies E(δ) of Coulomb systems is strongly affected by singularities at δ=1 and δ=0. Padé–Borel approximants with modifications that completely remove the singularities at δ=1 and remove the dominant singularity at δ=0 are demonstrated. A renormalization of the interelectron repulsion is found to move the dominant singularity of the Borel function F(δ)=∑jEj′/j!, where Ej′ are the the expansion coefficients of the energy with singularity structure removed at δ=1, farther from the origin and thereby accelerate summation convergence. The ground-state energies of He and H2+ are used as test cases. The new methods give significant improvement over previous summation methods. Shifted Borel summation using Fm(δ)=∑jEj′/Γ(j+1−m) is considered. The standard deviation of results calculated with different values of the shift parameter m is proposed as a measure of summation accuracy. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A simple interferometric technique has been developed to sequentially measure the piezoelectric and electro-optic (EO) coefficient of the poled polymer films. This technique, similar to the Michelson interferometer, is based on compensating the change of the optical path due to the piezoelectric and electric-optic effect of the poled polymer films by opposite piezoelectric effect of a quartz crystal. Our technique has advantages of simplicity, high sensitivity, and improved accuracies over the previous ones. The experimental values of the EO coefficients agree with the values predicted by the two-level model. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We present an efficient iterative method for calculating energy levels and wave functions. The method requires storing only a small number of vectors but allows one to calculate energy levels and wave functions with far fewer matrix–vector products than the filter diagonalization method of Mandelshtam and Taylor. A zeroth-order Hamiltonian is used to precondition a spectral transform Lanczos method. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We demonstrate that by using the symmetric quasiminimal residuals method one can reduce the number of Hamiltonian matrix–vector products required to compute converged energy levels and wave functions from an inexact spectral transform by about a factor of 2. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Beschreibung: We study the basic physical properties of composite nonlinear structure induced by the head-on collision of magnetosonic solitons. Solitary waves are assumed to propagate in a quantum electron-ion magnetoplasma with spin-1/2 degenerate electrons. The main interest of the present work is to investigate the time evolution of the merged composite structure during a specific time interval of the wave interaction process. We consider three cases of colliding-situation, namely, compressive-rarefactive solitons interaction, compressive-compressive solitons interaction, and rarefactive-rarefactive solitons interaction, respectively. Compared with the last two colliding cases, the changing process of the composite structure is more complex for the first situation. Moreover, it is found that they are obviously different for the last two colliding cases.

Beschreibung: Optically controllable signals are fundamental to various applications from communication to super-resolution imaging. However, literature on non-fluorescent, nonlinear optical signals that can be reversibly turned on/off on a sub-micrometer scale is scant. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate a scheme for the reversible suppression of second harmonic generation (SHG) based on dye-doped nematic liquid crystal molecules. Under a pump (suppressing SHG) and probe (generating SHG) setup with a tightly focusing microscope and a time-gated detection, outstanding modulation depth (〉80%) has been realized. Surprisingly, the mechanism of liquid crystal SHG switch on a sub-micrometer scale was found to be light-induced thermal phase transition as against optical Frederick's transition. Quantitative analysis of the optical nonlinearity χ ( 2 ) versus local heating shows an excellent agreement of SHG signal suppression as well as its dependence on the liquid crystal molecular order and phase change. Our work provides an innovative example of applying nonlinear optical properties of soft materials, and can be further optimized for all-optical modulation applications.

Beschreibung: Piezoelectric rings are periodically introduced and inserted in a base plate along the radial direction, forming a one-dimensional circular plate of piezoelectric radial phononic crystals (CPPRPC). The transfer matrix of the torsional wave between adjacent units is derived in cylindrical coordinates. Then, by introducing Lyapunov exponents, the phenomenon of the torsional wave band gap is analyzed with consideration of outer control. Furthermore, the effects of some factors, namely, radial span ratio, inner radius of the plate, open-circuit, and short-circuit statuses of the piezoelectric ceramics, on the torsional wave band gap are also discussed in detail. The results show that the distinct band gaps are obtained for torsional waves propagating in CPPRPC. Together with the outer control gain, structural and piezoelectric parameters have significant effects on the band gaps. In particular, middle-low frequency band gaps can be effectively obtained by rationally varying the outer active control gain.

Beschreibung: We propose a metasurface to achieve multi-band helicity dependent directional spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) coupling for circular polarized light in the microwave range. Our work shows that the coupling frequencies of spoof SPPs on the gradient metasurface are related to the dispersion relations of the metasurface, which indicate the desired coupling frequency can be manipulated by dispersion engineering. The proposed metasurface has counter-directional phase gradients for different helicity incidents and possesses multiple different dispersion relations by carefully designing the geometric parameters of each unit, which leads to the multi-band helicity-controlled directional spoof SPPs coupling. Both the simulation and experiment show that the multi-band helicity-controlled directional spoof SPPs coupling is achieved with a high efficiency.
