    Sonographic evidence of intraperitoneal fluid an experimental study and its clinical implications (1984)

    Notes: Abstract In order to evaluate the sensitivity of ultrasound to intraperitoneal fluid, such as ascites or blood, an experimental study was performed in the pig. Various amounts of fluid were injected into the peritoneal cavity to investigate distribution and diagnostic criteria in different positions. As little as 10 ml of fluid was visualized around the urinary bladder in an upright position. In the supine position, 20 ml could be detected around the bladder and 30 ml around the liver. The injection of at least 60 ml resulted in a pattern of free-floating bowel loops. The sonographic findings of fluid distribution were correlated to radiological studies. As different amounts of fluid produce characteristic sonographic patterns, an approximate estimation of the intraperitoneal fluid volume can be made.

    Notes: Summary Besides the two axial fibers and the mass of cribellum fibrils, a third component is present in the capture threads of uloborids. This is a substructure originating from the paracribellum. It probably helps to fasten the axial fibers in their position. The axial fibers are secreted from the two glandulae pseudoflagelliformes whose spigots are situated on the posterior spinnerets. It is hypothesized that the cribellum fibrils become jammed and thus fixed between the axial fibers by periodical abduction and adduction of these spinnerets.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary The effectiveness and tolerance of cefotaxime was examined in five children with severe infections who were being treated with high doses of cytotoxic drugs for leukemia or malignant histiocytosis. On account of the myelosuppressive and immunosuppressive effects of the cytotoxic drugs, all children had been treated prophylactically with antibiotics or chemotherapeutic agents prior to therapy with cefotaxime. In four children therapy was clearly successful. No serious side-effects of cefotaxime therapy were observed.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Die Wirksamkeit und Verträglichkeit von Cefotaxim wurde an fünf Kindern mit schwer verlaufenden Infektionen überprüft, die unter hochdosierter zytostatischer Therapie bei Leukämien bzw. maligner Histiozytose standen. Im Hinblick auf die myelo- und immunosuppressive Wirkung der Zytostatika wurden alle Kinder bereits vor der Therapie mit Cefotaxim prophylaktisch mit Antibiotika oder Chemotherapeutika behandelt. Ein eindeutiger Therapieerfolg wurde bei vier Kindern erzielt. Wesentliche Nebenwirkungen der Cefotaxim-Therapie wurden nicht beobachtet.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Bei 107 Morbus Crohn-Patienten mit ileocolischen bzw. ileorectalen Anastomosen wurden in den 30 risikoreichsten Fällen protektive doppelläufige Ileostomien angelegt. Indikationen waren Ileus, Sepsis und ausgedehnte perianale Fisteln. Anastomoseninsuffizienzen traten bei 8 der 77 Patienten ohne Ileostomie auf. 3 dieser Patienten verstarben an Niereninsuffizienz infolge lokaler Peritonitis. Nur einer der 30 Patienten mit Ileostomie hatte eine Anastomoseninsuffizienz. Keiner dieser Patienten verstarb, obwohl es sich um die zunächst ungünstiger erscheinenden Fälle handelte.
    Notes: Summary Of 107 patients suffering from Crohn's disease, protective loop ileostomy was constructed in 30 cases with an ileocolic or ileorectal anastomosis. The indications were: ileus, sepsis, and complicated perianal fistulae. Anastomotic leakages occurred in 8 of 77 patients without an ileostomy. Of these 30 patients, 3 died of kidney dysfunction after local peritonitis. An anastomotic leakage occurred in one case with an ileostomy. None of them died. These patients, however, represent the high-risk group.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Unter 129 Pankreatitiden der Jahre 1970–1979 konnten 18 Pseudocysten diagnostiziert werden. Die innere Drainage erfolgte durch Cystojejunostomie. Eine Cystenblutung zwang einmal vor und 4mal nach erfolgter Drainage OP zur Intervention. Als Blutungsquellen wurden die A. pancreatica und die A. lienalis identifiziert. Die Heilung war nach Linksresektion und Splenektomie komplikationslos. Als therapeutisches Konzept der Pseudocystenbehandlung empfiehlt sich die effiziente Drainage, evtl. die Pankreasteilresektion und die prophylaktische Ligatur der Milzgefäße.
    Notes: Summary Of 129 pancreatitic diseases from 1970–1979, 18 pancreatic pseudocysts were diagnosed. Internal drainage was performed via cystojejunostomy. Hemorrhage in the cyst necessitated an intervention one time before and four times after the drainage operation. A. pancreatica and A. lienalis were identified as the sources. Recovery ensued without complication after resection of the pancreatic tail and splenectomy. The therapeutic concept must involve efficient drainage. Partial resection of the pancreas and prophylactic ligature of splenic vessels are recommended.

    Notes: Abstract Thermal conductivity of the gases CFCl3 (Freon 11), CF2Cl2 (Freon 12), and their binary mixtures with nitrogen have been measured at 292 K. The results for the mixtures are compared with various theoretical models, which give the thermal conductivity as a function of concentration using properties of the pure components. From the experimental results, the mutual diffusion coefficients for the two systems are calculated.

    Notes: Recently developed new techniques of ion formation from organic solids may become very useful in the application of mass spectrometers as detector units in liquid chromatography. Details of a liquid chromatograph mass spectrometer coupling device are presented. Some features of this device, combined with a quadrupole secondary ion mass spectrometer, are demonstrated experimentally by the analysis of aqueous solutions of leucine and cytosine. It is demonstrated that the sensitivity of the liquid chromatography secondary ion mass spectrometry combination covers the concentration range occurring in liquid chromatography.
