Notes: SUMMARY. 〈list xml:id="l1" style="custom"〉1A kinetic approach in which the uptake rate of simultaneous additions of orthophosphate and carrier-free phosphorus- 32 by a standard culture of the green alga Selenastrum capricornutum under near neutral conditions was used to obtain an estimate of the readily available components of the total phosphorus pool in natural freshwater samples.2A comparison was made between the values of the biologically available phosphorus obtained using this radiobioassay technique and those obtained by the soluble reactive phosphorus procedure for thirty-one freshwater samples. Only about three-quarters of the phosphorus measured as soluble reactive phosphorus was readily available to algae. The results agreed with those obtained in an earlier study in which an enzymatic procedure was used to determine orthophosphate.3The results of tests carried out on the water samples used in this study were consistent with the conclusion that the presence of a hydrous ferric oxide-orthophosphale complex in the samples caused the soluble reactive phosphorus value to be greater than the corresponding biologically available phosphorus value.

Notes: [Auszug] The wavelengths of the emission lines are given in Table 1. Three groups of lines occur, the strongest between 1,575 and 1,598 A, the others between 1,503 and 1,518 A and between 1,431 and 1,452 A. The wavelengths were determined on a scale established from nearby lines of neutral atoms. For the ...

Notes: [Auszug] THERE are few spectral ranges in which observations of astrophysical sources have not been made. One of the few is the extreme ultraviolet region, which is virtually unexplored owing to earlier assumptions that the interstellar medium would be opaque at wavelengths between the hydrogen Lyman ...

Notes: Abstract Betahistine produced a concentration-dependent contraction of the guinea-pig ileum and was about 27 times less active than histamine in this respect. Betahistine induced desensitization of contractile responses to histamine in the guinea-pig ileum. The H1 histamine receptor antagonist mepyramine was a competitive antagonist of the action of betahistine on the guinea-pig ileum. Betahistine caused relaxation of the rat uterus contracted by acetylcholine, and this action of betahistine was blocked by the H2 receptor antagonist cimetidine. Betahistine had a concentration-dependent positive chronotropic action on isolated guinea-pig atria, and in this respect was tenfold less potent than histamine. The action of betahistine on the atria was blocked by the H2 receptor antagonist YM11170. Betahistine caused a concentration-related contraction of the isolated lung parenchymal strip of the guinea-pig, and YM11170 potentiated this effect. Betahistine failed to release histamine from rat peritoneal mast cells at concentrations up to 100 μM and it did not prevent histamine release induced by either substance P or anti-IgE. Betahistine produced a dose-related flare and wheal reaction when injected intradermally into human skin. It is concluded that betahistine has agonist activity at both H1 and H2 receptors for histamine.

Notes: Abstract A karyotypic study on a subspecies of the dusky titi,Callicebus moloch brunneus, was carried out and a third karyotype ofC. moloch was discovered. The chromosome number of this subspecies is 48. The autosomes consist of 5 subtelocentric, 5 submeta- or metacentric, and 13 acrocentric chromosome pairs. The X chromosome and the Y chromosome are submetacentric and metacentric, respectively. A comparative study with other subspecies of theC. moloch group (i.e.,C. m. cupreus andC. m. ornatus with 2n=46 andC. m. donacophilus with 2n=50) suggests that the karyotype ofbrunneus occupies a position intermediate between the two other karyotypes ofC. moloch, but nearer to that of 2n=50. The presumed total differences betweenbrunneus andcupreus comprise one Robertsonian rearrangement, one centromeric transposition and four pericentric inversions, and those betweenbrunneus anddonacophilus involve one translocation or breakage (possibly corresponding to two events, that is, one Robertsonian rearrangement and one centromeric transposition).

Notes: Abstract Twigs from five ponderosa pine trees (Pinus ponderosa) used by Abert squirrels (Sciurus aberti) as feed trees and five nonfeed trees were collected every 45 days and their monoterpenoid and nutrient content determined. Thet tests (unpaired observations) detected no significant difference in the level of monoterpenoids in the outer bark of feed (0.77%) and nonfeed (0.75%) trees. The same was true for inner bark of feed (0.10%) and nonfeed (0.16%) trees. Monoterpenoid levels in outer bark (0.75%) were significantly higher than inner bark (0.13%). The inner bark is what is eaten by Abert squirrels. Protein and other nutrients did not differ significantly between feed and nonfeed trees. However, both outer and inner bark were easier to remove from the woody portion of the feed tree twigs than those twigs collected from nonfeed trees. Therefore, due to the lack of differences in monoterpenoid and nutrient content between feed and nonfeed trees, we attributed the use of certain trees for use as feed trees to the ease of peeling and separating outer from inner bark.

Notes: Abstract We tested the hypothesis that the monoterpenoid levels in the ingesta from various digestive organs of sage grouse are less than that expected from the big sagebrush leaves ingested. Results supported the hypothesis. Dramatic reductions occurred between the gizzard and duodenum. Monoterpenoid levels in the ceca were nil; thus adverse effects of monoterpenoids on ceca microbes would also be nil.

Notes: Abstract We describe and analyse observations of an M1.4 flare which began at 17: 00 UT on 12 November, 1980. Ground based Hα and magnetogram data have been combined with EUV, soft and hard X-ray observations made with instruments on-board the Solar Maximum Mission (SMM) satellite. The preflare phase was marked by a gradual brightening of the flare site in Ov and the disappearance of an Hα filament. Filament ejecta were seen in Ov moving southward at a speed of about 60 km s−1, before the impulsive phase. The flare loop footpoints brightened in Hα and the Caxix resonance line broadened dramatically 2 min before the impulsive phase. Non-thermal hard X-ray emission was detected from the loop footpoints during the impulsive phase while during the same period blue-shifts corresponding to upflows of 200–250 km s−1 were seen in Ca xix. Evidence was found for energy deposition in both the chromosphere and corona at a number of stages during the flare. We consider two widely studied mechanisms for the production of the high temperature soft X-ray flare plasma in the corona, i.e. chromospheric evaporation, and a model in which the heating and transfer of material occurs between flux tubes during reconnection.
