    Beschreibung: Rising stable nitrogen isotope ratios (δ15N) in dated sediment records of the German Bight/SE North Sea track river-induced coastal eutrophication over the last 2 centuries. Fully exploiting their potential for reconstructions of pristine conditions and quantitative analysis of historical changes in the nitrogen cycle from these sediment records requires knowledge on processes that alter the isotopic signal in non-living organic matter (OM) of sinking particles and sediments. In this study, we analyze the isotopic composition of particulate nitrogen (PN) in the water column during different seasons, in surface sediments, and in sediment cores to assess diagenetic influences on the isotopic composition of OM. Amino acid (AA) compositions of suspended matter, surface sediments, and dated cores at selected sites of the German Bight serve as indicators for quality and degradation state of PN. The δ15N of PN in suspended matter had seasonal variances caused by two main nitrate sources (oceanic and river) and different stages of nitrate availability during phytoplankton assimilation. Elevated δ15N values (〉 20‰) in suspended matter near river mouths and the coast coincide with a coastal water mass receiving nitrate with elevated isotope signal (δ15N 〉 10‰) derived from anthropogenic input. Particulate nitrogen at offshore sites fed by oceanic nitrate having a δ15N between 5 and 6‰ had low δ15N values (〈 2‰), indicative of an incipient phytoplankton bloom. Surface sediments along an offshore–onshore transect also reflect the gradient of low δ15N of nitrate in offshore sites to high values near river mouths, but the range of values is smaller than between the end members listed above and integrates the annual δ15N of detritus. Sediment cores from the coastal sector of the gradient show an increasing δ15N trend (increase of 2.5‰) over the last 150 years. This is not related to any change in AA composition and thus reflects eutrophication. The δ15N signals from before AD 1860 represent a good estimation of pre-industrial isotopic compositions with minimal diagenetic overprinting. Rising δ13C in step with rising δ15N in these cores is best explained by increasing productivity caused by eutrophication.

    Beschreibung: In the framework of the GENUS –“Geochemistry and Ecology of the Namibian Upwelling System” research program, trophic interactions and carbon pathways throughout the food web of the coastal upwelling system are being quantified. In contrast to earlier studies, special focus is been given to lower trophic levels in higher taxonomic resolution. Energy demands of various zooplankton taxa, including copepods, euphausiids, decapods and fish larvae, have been quantified with standardized methodology via optode respirometry. Dietary spectra and trophic levels were analyzed by trophic biomarker approaches based on fatty acid composition and stable isotopes (15N, 13C), respectively. All empirical data are assembled for an Ecopath with Ecosim (EwE) food-web model. The EwE model distinguishes between shelf and offshore communities. The conceptual food‐web model consists of three groups of primary producers, i.e. diatoms, dinoflagellates, and cyanobacteria, as well as many consumers such as Calanoides carinatus as the key herbivorous copepod in the Benguela upwelling system, other copepods, Euphausia hanseni, other zooplankton, and pelagic fishes including sardine, anchovy, and horse mackerel. Empirical data show that zooplankton and particularly copepods encompass a wider range of trophic levels from herbivory to secondary or even tertiary consumers (δ15N from 4 to 12‰), while anchovy had rather low δ15N of about 7‰. Respiration rates and metabolic activities of copepods could be parameterized for the model by an energy budget approach based on ambient temperature, body mass, and activity level. Calanoid copepods consumed 78mg C m‐2 d‐1 in shelf regions and 21mg C m‐2 d‐1 in oceanic regions. Locally, C. carinatus could remove up to 90% of the diatom biomass per day. The community consumption of pelagic decapods ranged from 7 mg C m‐2 d‐1 to 〉20mg C m‐2 d‐1 with highest values in the northernmost part of the study area. Overall, pelagic decapods apparently play a more prominent role in the northern Benguela ecosystem than previously assumed and may exert a substantial predation pressure on calanoid copepods. GENUS results emphasize that the trophic interactions within zooplankton and lower trophic levels are more complex than just linking primary producers with pelagic fish and should be taken into account in the process of developing realistic food‐web models of coastal upwelling systems.     Beschreibung: Sedimentary d15N records are valuable archives of ocean history but they are often modified during early diagenesis. Here we quantify the effect of early diagenetic enrichment on sedimentary N-isotope composition in order to obtain the pristine signal of reactive N assimilated in the euphotic zone. This is possible by using paired data of d15N and amino acid composition of sediment samples, which can be applied to estimate the degree of organic matter degradation. We determined d15N and amino acid composition in coeval sediments from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Hole 772 B in the central Arabian Sea and from Hole 724 C situated on the Oman Margin in the western Arabian Sea coastal upwelling area. The records span the last 130 kyr and include two glacial-interglacial cycles. These new data are used in conjunction with data available for surface sediments that cover a wide range of organic matter degradation states, and with other cores from the northern and eastern Arabian Sea to explore spatial variations in the isotopic signal. In order to reconstruct pristine N values we apply the relationship between organic matter degradation and 15N enrichment in surface sediments to correct the core records for early diagenetic enrichment. Reconstructed d15N values suggest a significant role of N2-fixation during glacial stages. An evaluation of two preservation indices based on amino acid composition (Reactivity Index, RI; Jennerjahn and Ittekkot, 1997; and the Degradation Index, DI; Dauwe et al., 1999) in both recent sediments and core samples suggests that the RI is more suitable than the DI in correcting Arabian Sea d15N records for early diagenetic enrichment.

    Beschreibung: The enhanced accumulation of organic matter in Eastern Mediterranean sapropels and their unusually low d15N values have been attributed to either enhanced nutrient availability which led to elevated primary production and carbon sequestration or to enhanced organic matter preservation under anoxic conditions. In order to evaluate these two hypothesis we have determined Ba/Al ratios, amino acid composition, N and organic C concentrations and d15N in sinking particles, surface sediments, eight spatially distributed core records of the youngest sapropel S1 (10-6 ka) and older sapropels (S5, S6) from two locations. These data suggest that (i) temporal and spatial variations in d15N of sedimentary N are driven by different degrees of diagenesis at different sites rather than by changes in N-sources or primary productivity and (ii) present day TOC export production would suffice to create a sapropel like S1 under conditions of deep-water anoxia. This implies that both enhanced TOC accumulation and d15N depletion in sapropels were due to the absence of oxygen in deep waters. Thus preservation plays a major role for the accumulation of organic-rich sediments casting doubt on the need of enhanced primary production for sapropel formation.
