    Biomass of zooplankton at the Cape Verde Ocean Observatory (CVOO) as quantified by day/night multinet hauls (2023)

    Description: Zooplankton samples were collected during different cruises (2012-2019) using the same Hydrobios Multinet Midi (0.25m^2 net opening, 200µm mesh, five nets) in vertical hauls from 1000m to the surface, with depth strata 1000-600-300-200-100-0. Samples were size-fractionated, digitized and sorted into taxonomic categories on Ecotaxa (https://ecotaxa.obs-vlfr.fr/prj/6139). Using area to biomass conversion factors from Lehette & Hernandez-Leon 2006, individual biomass was estimated. Data were aggregated into summed abundance (ind m^3) and biomass (µg DW m^3) for each taxon.

    Ship-based biogeochemical bottle data from the CVOO time series (2006-2019) in the Eastern Tropical North Atlantic (2023)

    Description: This dataset compiles all available ship-based biogeochemical measurements at the Cape Verde Ocean Observatory (CVOO) into one merged dataset. The irregular measurements at CVOO started in 2006 and are still ongoing aiming at increasing data coverage in a key region for air-sea interaction. The station has a bottom depth of 3600 m and lies in the center of the Cape Verde Fontal Zone, resulting in large variations of the present oligotrophic water masses as well as an oxygen-poor layer between 400 m to 500 m. The dataset includes oxygen, nutrients, dissolved inorganic carbon, total alkalinity, and particulate organic matter measurements, and ancillary ctd-data are also included. The research vessels used and the exact measurement methods as well as the laboratories varied on a cruise-to-cruise basis, accordingly the data has undergone additional quality-control checks. The checks included flier detection (WOCE-flagging) and crossover-analysis that resulted in bias corrections.

    Processed CO2 measurements during the 2021-2022 Saildrone 1079 mission (Eastern Tropical Atlantic area) (2023)

    Description: In the framework of the EuroSea project (Task 7.3), a demonstration mission in the Tropical Atlantic has been conducted to enhance and optimize the network design of the Tropical Atlantic Observing System (TAOS) following an integrative multi-platform approach. One Gen6 Saildrone Explorer USV equipped with a CTD, wind, and carbon measurements systems sailed to the Cape Verde region where it acquired data between September 2021 and February 2023. Objectives for this mission include developing an integrated multi-platform approach to improving carbon monitoring, data quality, and regional upscaling from moored instrumentation, biogeochemical Argo floats, autonomous surface observation, and remote sensing products. The present dataset is also part of the SOCAT 2023 database.

    ADCP current measurements (75 kHz) during RV MARIA S. MERIAN cruise MSM106 (2022)

    Description: Upper-ocean velocities along the cruise track of Maria S. Merian cruise MSM106 were continuously collected by a vessel-mounted Teledyne RD Instruments 75 kHz Ocean Surveyor ADCP. The transducer was located at 6.0 m below the water line. The instrument was operated in three different configurations: 1) broadband mode with 4 m bins and a blanking distance of 2.0 m, with a total of 128 bins, 2) broadband mode with 8 m bins and a blanking distance of 4.0 m, with a total of 100 bins, 3) narrowband mode with 8 m bins and a blanking distance of 4.0 m, with a total of 100 bins. The ship's velocity was calculated from position fixes obtained by the Global Positioning System (GPS). Heading, pitch and roll data from the ship's gyro platforms and the navigation data were used by the data acquisition software VmDas internally to convert ADCP velocities into earth coordinates. Accuracy of the ADCP velocities mainly depends on the quality of the position fixes and the ship's heading data. Further errors stem from a misalignment of the transducer with the ship's centerline. Data post-processing included water track calibration of the misalignment angle (configuration 1: 0.65° +/- 0.5915°, configuration 2: 0.78° +/- 0.5198°, configuration 3: 0.67° +/- 0.6996°) and scale factor (configuration1: 1.0075 +/- 0.0117, configuration 2: 1.0075 +/- 0.0087, configuration 3: 1.0007 +/- 0.0157) of the Ocean Surveyor signal. The average interval was set to 60 s.

    Description: Underway temperature and salinity data was collected along the cruise track with two autonomous measurement systems. Usually, the systems are changed after 6 hours. While temperature is taken at the water inlet in about 6.5 m depth, salinity is estimated within the interior measurement container from conductivity and interior temperature. Temperature and salinity were calibrated against CTD values from 7m depth. For details to all processing steps see Data Processing Report.
