Notizen: We describe how the unique growth environment provided by a multilayer Co/Ti(O)-Si structure leads to the formation of epitaxial CoSi2/Si(100). A key factor is the preferential nucleation of (311) CoSi which is the dominant phase from 650 to 800 °C in this multilayer system. Epitaxial CoSi2 then nucleates at the (311) CoSi/(100) Si interface and grows during a 900 °C second annealing. Having Ti as the first layer in contact with the Si substrate reduces the native Si oxide and residual impurities. The amorphous Ti(O) provides a uniform supply of slowly diffusing Co that promotes preferential CoSi formation. The upper Co and Ti layers serve to stabilize the reaction and suppress agglomeration.

Notizen: Abstract Solvent effects on the lowest-energy electronic transitions of two merocyanines derived from quinoline have been studied using nine different solvent parameters reported in the literature. Relative merits and deficiencies of different parameters have been assessed. From the correlation results, attempts have been made to propose a solute-solvent interaction mechanism. For an assorted set of 19 solvents, as well as for a set of nine hydroxylic solvents, excellent results are obtained with correlation equation involving ET(30) and Hilderbrand's solubility parameter δH.

Notizen: Abstract The highest point of the plasma concentration-time profile, C max , is currently used by regulatory agencies to assess the rate of drug absorption after single dose administration of oral products. It is, however, quite insensitive, and a number of new measures of rate have been proposed. Using simulations, several approaches toward measuring rate were tested. A set of model scenarios for drugs with typical mean characteristics and statistical distributions was investigated. Using different kinetic models of disposition, the time course of the concentration in plasma was simulated. Intraindividual and interindividual variability and assay error were modeled using Monte Carlo techniques. The accuracy, precision, and ease of use of the various measures of rate were evaluated by simulating crossover design clinical trials and then determining the probability of declaring bioequivalence as a function of differences in rates of absorption between test and reference formulations. All of the rate measures tested showed a degree of insensitivity to changes in rate and no universally superior measure was found. Indeed, the main conclusion is that the choice of a measure should be based on simulations of the particular situation in a bioequivalence trials.

Notizen: Summary Biological reactions which interact with their environment are subject to the influx of noise. Noise introduces randomness and imparts fractal character to the deterministic behavior. A methodology is proposed to compute the fractal dimensions of such reactions. It is applied to the continuous culture of Zymomonas mobilis to produce ethanol. Results show that noise can change the nature of oscillations or induce oscillations in a stationary state. The noise-induced oscillations are aperiodic and fractal in nature. The variation of the fractal dimension with dilution rate and the initial ethanol concentration is presented and discussed in terms of the interaction between process kinetics and the incoming noise.

Notizen: Abstract The determination of the area under the concentration–time curve (AUC) is the method most commonly used by regulatory agencies to assess extent of drug absorption after single-dose administration of oral products. Using simulations, several approaches toward measuring the actual area, in whole or part, were tested. In addition, the performance of the peak concentration (C max), usually taken as a measure of the rate of absorption was assessed evaluating extent. Model scenarios for drugs with typical mean characteristics and statistical distributions were investigated. Using different kinetic models of disposition, the time course of the drug concentration in plasma was simulated. Intraindividual and interindividual variability and assay error were modeled using Monte Carlo techniques. The accuracy, precision, and ease of use of the various measures of extent were evaluated, and statistical power analyses were performed. Among the measures tested, the most reliable were the AUC computed up to the time of the last quantifiable concentration, without extrapolation, and C max. However, being also sensitive to rate, C max as a measure of extent is of limited potential.

Notizen: A reversed two-environment model has been to study micromixing in continuous fermentation for growth and product formation by recombinant bacteria. As an example, an Escherichia coli M72 strain harbouring the plasmid pPLc23trpA1 and producing tryptophan synthetase is considered. With excess substrate, 10% plasmid-free bacteria in the initial broth do not affect the steady-state concentrations of plasmid-containing bacteria but their mass fractions decrease significantly. With a smaller substrate concentration, the mass fractions decrease sharply as the dilution rate increases if micromixing is good; but concentrations still remain high. There is also a clear demarcation between regions of good and poor micromixing. These results are explained and an optimal combination of micromixing and dilution rate is suggested to maximise productivity.
