    Abstract: Lactobacillus acidophilus is a natural inhabitant of mammalian gastrointestinal systems and is used in dairy and pharmaceutical products. Five draft genome sequences, covering 1,995,790 nucleotides (nt) on average, are divided into 19 to 34 scaffolds covering 1,995 to 2,053 genes. The draft genome sequences were compared to the sequence of the L. acidophilus NCFM dairy strain.

    Abstract: A heterotrophic, antibiotic-producing bacterium, strain T5 T , was isolated from the German Wadden Sea, located in the southern region of the North Sea. Sequence analysis of the 16S rRNA gene of this strain demonstrated close affiliation with Roseobacter gallaeciensis BS107 T (99 % similarity), but the results of genotypic (DNA–DNA hybridization and DNA G+C content) and phenotypic characterization revealed that strain T5 T represents a novel species. The novel organism is strictly aerobic, Gram-negative, rod-shaped, motile and forms brown-pigmented colonies. Strain T5 T produces the antibiotic tropodithietic acid throughout the exponential phase which inhibits the growth of bacteria from different taxa, as well as marine algae. Strain T5 T requires sodium ions and utilizes a wide range of substrates, including oligosaccharides, sugar alcohols, organic acids and amino acids. The DNA G+C content is 55.7 mol%. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that strains T5 T and Roseobacter gallaeciensis BS107 T group with Leisingera methylohalidivorans as their closest described relative within the Roseobacter clade (97.9 and 97.6 % sequence similarity, respectively) and with Ruegeria algicola (96.6 and 96.5 % similarity, respectively) of the Alphaproteobacteria . Comparison of strains T5 T and Roseobacter gallaeciensis BS107 T with Roseobacter denitrificans and Roseobacter litoralis showed striking differences in 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities, chemical composition, pigmentation, presence of bacteriochlorophyll a and antibiotic production. On the basis of these results, it is proposed that Roseobacter gallaeciensis is reclassified as the type species of a new genus, Phaeobacter , as Phaeobacter gallaeciensis comb. nov. (type strain BS107 T =CIP 105210 T =ATCC 700781 T =NBRC 16654 T =DSM 17395 T ). Strain T5 T (=LMG 22475 T =DSM 16374 T ) is proposed as the type strain of a novel species of this genus, Phaeobacter inhibens sp. nov. At the same time, emended descriptions are provided of the genera Roseobacter , Ruegeria and Leisingera , as well as reclassifying Ruegeria algicola as the type species of a new genus, Marinovum , with the name Marinovum algicola comb. nov.

    Abstract: An orange bacterial strain, designated G5 T , was isolated during the study of the bacterial diversity of a coal mine. The cell wall of strain G5 T contained peptidoglycan type A4 α ( l -Lys–Gly– l -Glu) and the sugars xylose and mannose. The major menaquinones were MK-8 (45.0 %) and MK-9 (34.0 %) and minor amounts of MK-7 and MK-8(H 2 ) were also found. The major fatty acids were anteiso-C 15 : 0 (44.9 %) and iso-C 15 : 0 (44.2 %). The main cellular polar lipids were diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylinositol. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that strain G5 T was closely related to Yaniella halotolerans YIM 70085 T and Yaniella flava YIM 70178 T (both 96.7 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity). The genomic DNA G+C content of strain G5 T was 61.6 mol%. These data and other phenotypic characteristics clearly indicated that strain G5 T represents a novel species of the genus Yaniella , for which the name Yaniella fodinae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is G5 T (=MTCC 9846 T =DSM 22966 T ).

    Abstract: Strain NRRL B-23883 T was isolated from retail ground beef as part of a study on the genetic diversity of Clostridium perfringens . The strain was found to be a strictly anaerobic, Gram-positive coccus that was able to utilize peptone as a sole carbon source. Analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that the strain was closely related to species within the genera Peptoniphilus and Anaerosphaera , but it was substantially different from the closest recognized species by nearly 10 % sequence divergence. The strain was also found to be closely related ( 〉 99 % sequence similarity) to an uncultured bacterial strain that was sequenced from a 16S rRNA gene clone library constructed to characterize the bacterial community of faeces from a captive spotted hyena. Strain NRRL B-23883 T shared the peptidoglycan type A4β, l -Orn– d -Glu with members of the genus Peptoniphilus . Further phenotypic analysis revealed that strain NRRL B-23883 T was able to utilize glycyl l -methionine as a sole carbon source, in contrast to other species of the genus Peptoniphilus . Therefore, it is proposed that the isolate represents a novel species, Peptoniphilus methioninivorax sp. nov.; the type strain is NRRL B-23883 T ( = DSM 22461 T ).

    Abstract: The taxonomic position of a strain isolated from soil in Shiraz, Fars province, Iran, was investigated. Strain UTMC 693 T produced an extensively branched substrate mycelium and aerial hyphae consisting of hyphae that fragment into short to elongated rod-like elements. The chemotaxonomic characteristics of the isolate matched those described for the genus Kribbella . Strain UTMC 693 T showed the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to Kribbella karoonensis DSM 17344 T (98.3 %), K. swartbergensis DSM 17345 T (98.2 %), K. hippodromi S1.4 T (98.0 %), K. aluminosa HKI 0478 T (98.0 %) and K. jejuensis HD9 T (98.0 %). DNA–DNA hybridization studies with closely related type strains showed 56.3 % relatedness to K. karoonensis , 21.3 % to K. swartbergensis , 39.0 % to K. jejuensis and 42.0 % to K. aluminosa . Thus, strain UTMC 693 T can be considered to represent a novel Kribbella species. Strain UTMC 693 T showed the typical morphology found among members of Kribbella , but can be differentiated easily from closely related species by genotypic characteristics, chemotaxonomic results and other phenotypic markers. Based on these results, strain UTMC 693 T ( = DSM 45490 T  = CCUG 61792 T ) is considered the type strain of a novel species of the genus Kribbella , for which the name Kribbella shirazensis sp. nov. is proposed.

    Abstract: A water sample from the North Sea was used to isolate the abundant heterotrophic bacteria that are able to grow on complex marine media. Isolation was by serial dilution and spread plating. Phylogenetic analysis of nearly complete 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that one of the strains, HEL-45 T , had 97·4 % sequence similarity to Sulfitobacter mediterraneus and 96·5 % sequence similarity to Staleya guttiformis . Strain HEL-45 T is a Gram-negative, non-motile rod and obligate aerobe and requires sodium and 1–7 % sea salts for growth. It contains storage granules and does not produce bacteriochlorophyll. Optimal growth temperatures are 25–30 °C. The DNA base composition (G+C content) is 60·1 mol%. Strain HEL-45 T has Q10 as the dominant respiratory quinone. The major polar lipids are phosphatidyl glycerol, diphosphatidyl glycerol, phosphatidyl choline, phosphatidyl ethanolamine and an aminolipid. The fatty acids comprise 18 : 1 ω 7 c , 18 : 0, 16 : 1 ω 7 c , 16 : 0, 3-OH 10 : 0, 3-OH 12 : 1 (or 3-oxo 12 : 0) and traces of an 18 : 2 fatty acid. Among the hydroxylated fatty acids only 3-OH 12 : 1 (or 3-oxo 12 : 0) appears to be amide linked, whereas 3-OH 10 : 0 appears to be ester linked. The minor fatty acid components (between 1 and 7 %) allow three subgroups to be distinguished in the Sulfitobacter / Staleya clade, placing HEL-45 T into a separate lineage characterized by the presence of 3-OH 12 : 1 (or 3-oxo 12 : 0) and both ester- and amide-linked 16 : 1 ω 7 c phospholipids. HEL-45 T produces indole and derivatives thereof, several cyclic dipeptides and thryptanthrin. Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences and chemotaxonomic data support the description of a new genus and species, to include Oceanibulbus indolifex gen. nov., sp. nov., with the type strain HEL-45 T (=DSM 14862 T =NCIMB 13983 T ).

    Abstract: Strain XLG9A10.2 T was isolated from an alkaline salt marsh soil in western China. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis indicated that strain XLG9A10.2 T constitutes a distinct lineage within the family Promicromonosporaceae , sharing 94·8–95·1 % gene similarity with members of the genus Promicromonospora and 94·4–95·7 % similarity with those of Xylanimonas and related genera. The general colony and cell morphology of strain XLG9A10.2 T is similar to that of members of Promicromonospora , but differs from members of the genus Xylanimonas in forming a well-developed branching mycelium and production of coccoid spores. Strain XLG9A10.2 T shows the peptidoglycan type A4 α ( l -lys← l -thr← d -Glu), contains glucose, mannose and galactose as whole cell sugars and has MK-9(H 4 ) and MK-9(H 6 ) as major menaquinones, while phospholipids are phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol, three unidentified phospholipids and one unidentified glycolipid. The DNA base composition is 71·9 mol% G+C. On the basis of morphological, chemotaxonomic, metabolic and phylogenetic differences from other species of Promicromonosporaceae , a new genus and species, Myceligenerans xiligouense gen. nov., sp. nov., is proposed. The type strain is XLG9A10.2 T (=DSM 15700 T =CGMCC 1.3458 T .)

    Abstract: A novel group of aerobic anoxygenic phototrophic bacteria was isolated from marine dinoflagellates, and two strains were characterized in detail. Cells were Gram-negative cocci or ovoid rods and were motile by means of a single, polarly inserted flagellum. They were obligate aerobes requiring 1–7 % salinity. The optimal pH range for growth was 6·5–9·0 and the temperature optimum was 33 °C. The bacteria contained bacteriochlorophyll a and spheroidenone as the only carotenoid. The in vivo absorption spectrum displayed two maxima in the infrared region at 804 and 868 nm. The distinct 804 nm band indicates the presence of light-harvesting system 2. Various organic carbon sources were assimilated, including many carboxylic acids, glucose and glycerol, but not butyrate, ethanol or methanol. Dissimilatory nitrate reduction was found for both strains. The physiological characteristics of the new strains resembled those of Roseobacter denitrificans , but there were differences in the lipid composition. Based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis the new strains are relatively distant from other recognized species, with the closest relatives Jannaschia helgolandensis , Ruegeria atlantica and Rhodobacter veldkampii showing 94·1–93·4 % similarity. Similarity to Roseobacter denitrificans was only 92·2 %, in line with numerous other species of the Roseobacter group. Therefore, it is proposed to classify the strains in a new genus and species within the Roseobacter clade, Dinoroseobacter shibae gen. nov., sp. nov. The type strain is DFL 12 T (=DSM 16493 T =NCIMB 14021 T ).

    Abstract: A Gram-positive, rod-shaped, non-spore-forming bacterium, strain CSC T , was isolated from diseased, surface-sterilized specimens of the predatory mite Phytoseiulus persimilis Athias-Henriot and subjected to polyphasic taxonomic analysis. Comparative analysis of the 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed that the strain was a new member of the family Micrococcaceae . Nearest phylogenetic neighbours were determined as Renibacterium salmoninarum (94·0 %), Arthrobacter globiformis (94·8 %) and Arthrobacter russicus (94·6 %). Although the predominant fatty acids (anteiso C 15 : 0 ), cell-wall sugars (galactose, glucose) and polar lipids (diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylinositol) are in accordance with those of members of the genus Arthrobacter , strain CSC T can be distinguished from members of the genus Arthrobacter by biochemical tests, the absence of a rod–coccus life cycle and the occurrence of the partially saturated menaquinone MK-10(H 2 ) as the predominant menaquinone. The DNA G+C content is 57·7 mol%. On the basis of morphological, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic differences from other species of the Micrococcaceae , a novel genus and species are proposed, Acaricomes phytoseiuli gen. nov., sp. nov. The type strain is CSC T (=DSM 14247 T =CCUG 49701 T ).
