Notes: The heat capacities of the ternary compounds RENiC2 (RE=Dy, Ho, Er, and Y) were studied in the temperature range between 2 and 30 K. From the heat capacity curves, the ordering temperatures are found to be 7.5, 3.0, and 8.1 K for DyNiC2, HoNiC2, and ErNiC2, respectively. Also a small peak is found at 4.7 K for DyNiC2. The heat capacity of YNiC2 was well-fitted with an average Debye temperature of 456 K in the temperature range between 2 and 30 K. The magnetic heat capacities and the changes of magnetic entropy for RENiC2 (RE=Dy, Ho, and Er) indicate a strong influence of the crystal field on these compounds. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A high-voltage pulse output modulator using a step-up transformer with two stages of magnetic pulse compression circuits has been developed as a spiker for the purpose of obtaining the breakdown of the gas mixture when using the spiker-sustainer excitation technique for pumping XeCl discharge lasers. When the transformer input is fed by a current pulse with a peak value and a full width of 1.16 kA and 1.6 μs, respectively, formed by a discharge of an initially charged 19-kV, 57-nF capacitance in series in the transformer primary loop, the 2.7-nF output capacitor bank (Cp) of the spiker can be charged up to 67 kV with a (10%–90%) rise time of 59 ns. The modulator has been tested at a repetition rate of up to 600 Hz in burst mode using a resistor in parallel with Cp as the load.

Notes: The construction characteristics and the performances of an x-ray diode working at 200 Hz are described. The temporal behavior of both the plasma cathode emission and the diode discharge has been studied, including the measurements of vacuum effects on the repetition rate and lifetime capability, preionization versus electrical features, and ionization density versus dosage. This simple and low-cost x-ray diode has been used to uniformly preionize a half-liter XeCl laser, delivering an output laser energy of 800 mJ/shot at a 100 Hz repetition rate.

Notes: The HC1 attachment rate constants have been measured by observing the electron drift current decay after termination of an x-ray ionizing pulse. In order to discuss the influence of the cathode potential drop on the results, a simplified cathode-drop model for non-self-sustaining discharge is described.

Notes: A new mode of 0°–360° bistable twisted nematic (BTN) liquid crystal display is developed by using a parameter space method. This new mode possesses a large dΔn value that provides a possibility of using a 4.8–7 μm cell gap and a 6.5 V operating voltage for the new 0°–360° BTN cells. The high-contrast ratios above 80 within −80°–80° viewing-angle ranges are obtained experimentally in a horizontal direction, and the highest contrast ratio achieved is up to 250. In the contrast ratio, the experiment's results concur with the simulation results. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Slow-time-scale magnetic fields driven by fast-time-scale electromagnetic waves or plasma waves are examined from the perspective of the Vlasov–Maxwell equations for a relativistic Vlasov plasma. An equation for slow-time-scale magnetic field is obtained. The field proposed in the present paper is a result of wave–wave beating which drives a solenoidal current. The magnitude of the slow-time-scale magnetic field proposed here can be as high as 20 MG at the critical surface for a laser intensity I=1018 W/cm2 at wavelength λ0=1.05 μm. The predicted magnetic field is observed in two-dimensional particle simulations presented here. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Blue electroluminescence is reported from CaS:TmF3 thin films prepared by radio frequency magnetron sputtering method. The dependences of brightness on substrate temperature, concentration of TmF3, and the applied voltage were investigated on alternating current thin-film electroluminescent devices. The obtained maximum brightness was above the level of ZnS:TmF3 devices. The equivalent average energy of the excited electrons contributed to the electroluminescence in CaS:TmF3 alternating current thin-film electroluminescent devices and was estimated at around 4.23 eV by comparing the ratio of infrared to blue peak in electroluminescent spectra with that in photoluminescent spectra excited by different photon energy. The excitation processes of electroluminescence in CaS:TmF3 thin films were assumed to be energy transfers from the conduction band edge to Tm3+ centers. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Ballistic electron emission spectroscopy (BEES) has been used to determine the conduction-band offset between a 10-nm-thick Al0.12In0.22Ga0.66As (Q) strained layer and a ternary Al0.2Ga0.8As (T) barrier located beneath the surface. A three-sample process was used so that the known, reproducible Au/GaAs Schottky barrier would be the top layer of all measured structures. BEES thresholds obtained for Au/GaAs, Au/GaAs/Q, and Au/GaAs/Q/T were 0.96±0.02, 0.98±0.04, and 1.08±0.04 meV yielding offsets of ∼20 meV for GaAs/Q and ∼100 meV for Q/T. Under the affect of a high-temperature anneal, the Q/T offset was reduced to ∼40 meV. In addition, a structure employing solely Au/GaAs/AlGaAs was used to study transitivity for the Q/T material system. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: : Genetic algorithms (GA) and simulated annealing (SA), two global search techniques, are coupled with MODFLOW, a commonly used groundwater flow simulation code, for optimal management of ground water resources under general conditions. The coupled simulation-optimization models allow for multiple management periods in which optimal pumping rates vary with time to reflect the changing flow conditions. The objective functions of the management models are of a very general nature, incorporating multiple cost terms such as the drilling cost, the installation cost, and the pumping cost. The models are first applied to two-dimensional maximum yield and minimum cost water supply problems with a single management period, and then to a multiple management period problem. The strengths and limitations of the GA and SA based models are evaluated by comparing the results with those obtained using linear programming, nonlinear programming, and differential dynamic programming. For the three example problems examined in this study, the GA and SA based models yield nearly identical or better solutions than the various programming methods. While SA tends to outperform GA in terms of the number of forward simulations needed, it uses more empirical control parameters which have significant impact on solution efficiency but are difficult to determine.
