Notizen: Background: Eosinophilic inflammation is a crucial aspect of allergic diseases such as bronchial asthma. An eosinophil-active chemokine, eotaxin, may play a role in the pathogenesis of the tissue eosinophilia accompanying asthma. Methods: Induced sputa were obtained from 53 patients with atopic asthma and six healthy subjects, and the concentration of eotaxin in the sputum was measured by ELISA. We investigated whether the sputum content of eotaxin is related to 1) asthma status or corticosteroid therapy, and 2) other sputum indices, including percentage of eosinophils and concentration of eosinophil cationic protein (ECP). Results: The patients with stable or unstable asthma showed significantly higher concentrations of sputum eotaxin than the normal controls. The level of sputum eotaxin demonstrated a positive correlation with the percentage of eosinophils in stable asthmatics not receiving corticosteroid therapy, but not in stable patients treated with corticosteroids, or in unstable patients. Sputum eotaxin demonstrated a positive correlation with ECP in asthmatic patients who were either in a stable state or not receiving steroid therapy. Conclusions: The elevated level of eotaxin detected in association with increased eosinophils and ECP in the sputum of asthmatics suggests that eotaxin is involved in the pathogenesis of eosinophilic airway inflammation. The relationship of eotaxin to airway eosinophilia may be modified by the stability status of asthma and corticosteroid therapy.

Notizen: A pressure-resisting cell system has been developed for high-pressure high-resolution nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements up to a maximum pressure of 600 MPa. This cell system is capable of performing high-pressure experiments with any standard spectrometer, including modern high field NMR machines. A full description of the high-pressure NMR assembly mounted on a 750 MHz spectrometer is presented along with a detailed explanation of the procedure for preparing the pressure-resisting quartz and glass cells. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We introduce a magnetic force controlled atomic force microscope (AFM) and point contact probe for use in ultrahigh vacuum and describe how our technique can significantly enhance the current capabilities of scanning probe microscopes. The instrument is specially designed to provide quantitative information on the nature of the tip-surface interaction. Forces are applied directly to magnetic material deposited behind the AFM tip via a current carrying coil. Oscillating the applied force and measuring the resulting displacement amplitude gives a continuous measurement of the absolute force gradient or contact stiffness. From this measurement the contact area or effective interaction area can be calculated for clean surfaces, thus eliminating the problems of unknown resolution and also facilitating the study of conduction and mechanical properties of small volumes. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), Rutherford-backscattering ion channeling, and particle induced x-ray emission channeling (PIXE/C) measurements have been performed in order to investigate compensation centers in Cl doped ZnSeTe. The EXAFS results from Cl doped ZnSeTe suggest that almost all Cl atoms are incorporated into substitutional Se lattice sites, which seems to indicate that Cl atoms themselves are not responsible for the compensation centers. The PIXE/C angular profiles were measured across the 〈100〉, 〈110〉, and 〈111〉 axes for undoped ZnSeTe. Comparing the angular profiles for Zn Kα, Se Kα, and Te Lα x-ray yields, it was found that some portion of the Te atoms (∼1020 cm−3) are located at tetrahedral interstitial sites. From these results, the difficulty of realizing n-type ZnSeTe is considered to be due to the existence of the interstitial Te atoms which act as acceptors. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Fresh surfaces of polycrystalline Al-49.2%Cu, Al, and In are fabricated in duffusion pump oil, and observed in situ using a scanning tunneling microscope. The current images reflect the atomic arrays on their surfaces. More clear images with atomic resolution are observable about 10 h later compared with those just after the fabrication. Atomic resolution images are observable in oil several days after, with increasing noise.

Notizen: Micromachining Teflon was achieved by direct exposure to synchrotron radiation and the microstructures made had the smallest surface detail down to 20 μm with structural height of more than 200 μm, that is, aspect ratio on the order of 10. The quality of micromachining Teflon by this process was found to be critically dependent on photon flux of the synchrotron radiation. Analysis of the mass distribution of gaseous species formed upon this process suggested that photochemical processes rather than pyrolytic processes may still dominate. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The experimentally optimized magnetic field configuration of the Large Helical Device [A. Iiyoshi et al., Nucl. Fusion 39, 1245 (1999)], where the magnetic axis is shifted inward by 15 cm from the early theoretical prediction, reveals 50% better global energy confinement than the prediction of the scaling law. This configuration has been investigated further from the viewpoints of high energy particle confinement and magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) stability. The confinement of high energy ions is improved as expected. The minority heating of ion cyclotron range of frequency was successful and the heating efficiency was improved by the inward shift. The confinement of passing particles by neutral beam injection was also improved under low magnetic field strength, and there could be obtained an almost steady high beta discharge up to 3% in volume average. This was a surprising result because the observed pressure gradient exceeded the Mercier unstable limit. The observed MHD activities became as high as beta but they did not grow enough to deteriorate the confinement of high energy ions or the performance of the bulk plasma, which was still 50% better than the scaling. According to these favorable results, better performance would be expected by increasing the heating power because the neoclassical transport can also be improved there. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Neutral beam injection heated discharges at the density limit in the Large Helical Device [O. Motojima, H. Yamada, A. Komori et al., Phys. Plasmas 6, 1843 (1999)] are terminated with asymmetric radiative collapse (ARC) exhibiting several properties in common with the MARFE (multifaceted asymmetric radiation from the edge) phenomenon: (1) A highly poloidally asymmetric radiation profile which is stronger on the inboard side. (2) This asymmetry is well correlated with the signal from the multichord interferometer. (3) Moreover, evidence from several diagnostics at different toroidal locations supports the possibility that ARC may be toroidally symmetric. However in contrast to MARFE, ARC is only observed in the period just prior to the quench of the plasma. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
