    Notes: Abstract Results of the 1996 field season (April-November) of the cloud chemistry program starting in 1992 at the Mt. Brocken are presented. The mountain site (1142 m a.s.l.) is located in the Harz Mountains/Germany. For a large part of the database (about 40%), both cloud water and drizzle and/or precipitation were present at the same time. A separation into two groups was done: non-precipitating clouds and mixed category of events. More than 2000 one hour samples were collected and analysed for major ions. The mean cloud water pH for the frostfree period in 1996 was 3.9. Histograms giving the distribution of pH values show that the pH values of samples from non-precipitating clouds ranges from 2.5 up to values 〉 8 and that the distribution is bimodale. For the 1996 field season period as a whole, pH values of cloud water were lower than those of mixed samples (cloud water, drizzle, precipitation) at the Brocken site. This was related to higher concentrations of all ions in cloud water. Cloud base measurements using a ceilometer confirmed the correlation between liquid water content and height above cloud base and consequently the influence of sampling height relative to the cloud base on the total ionic content of cloud water.

    Notes: Abstract An overview is given of the Kleiner Feldberg cloud experiment performed from 27 October until 13 November 1990. The experiment was carried out by numerous European research groups as a joint effort within the EUROTRAC-GCE project in order to study the interaction of cloud droplets with atmospheric trace constituents. After a description of the observational site and the measurements which were performed, the general cloud formation mechanisms encountered during the experiment are discussed. Special attention is given here to the process of moist adiabatic lifting. Furthermore, an overview is given regarding the pollutant levels in the gas phase, the particulate and the liquid phase, and some major findings are presented with respect to the experimental objectives. Finally, a first comparison attempts to put the results obtained during this campaign into perspective with the previous GCE field campaign in the Po Valley.

    Notes: Abstract We present results from the Brocken Cloud Chemistry Measurement Project (BROCCMON) which started in 1991. Since 1992 the full programme is running, based on continuous measurements (e.g. trace gases, meteorology, liquid water content), cloud water sampling and analysis and intensive measurement campaigns. The observed high variability of cloud water composition we explain with cloud dynamic and microphysical behaviour of clouds and differences in the air mass characteristics. During the measurement period 1992–1994 we observed an increase in cloud water acidity (by a factor of 3) and we found photochemical conditions typically for summersmog situations. Our preliminary data also show that an understanding of tropospheric ozone balance would be incomplete without consideration of chemical processes within clouds. A long-term goal of our programme is to establish a cloud chemistry climatology which is representative for the region.
