    Description: The Neogene and Quaternary sedimentary record of Leg 71 and previously drilled sequences from the Southern Ocean reveal evidence of a major late Miocene change of oceanic and glacial conditions in the southern high latitudes during paleomagnetic Chron 9. The characteristics of late Miocene sedimentation and in particular the study of erosional patterns and ice-rafted debris suggest the following conclusions. 1) In the late Miocene, the Polar Front first migrated to the northern latitudes of the Southern Ocean and surface water temperatures became similar to those of today. 2) Extensive ice shelves or ice tongues were not present along the Antarctic margin until late Chron 9 (about 9.0 Ma). 3) Before Chron 9, West Antarctica was occupied by an archipelago and the West Antarctic Sea. 4) Extensive ice shelves formed in the West Antarctic region, eventually coalescing and thickening to form the grounded West Antarctic ice sheet by Chron 9. 5) The newly formed West Antarctic ice sheet was probably unstable and frequently became an ungrounded ice shelf, thus accounting for the scarcity of late Miocene ice-rafted debris. 6) Extensive erosion or nondeposition of sediment was probably the result of increased Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) formation in the West Antarctic region during the initial formation of extensive West Antarctic ice shelves and during periods when the West Antarctic ice sheet was ungrounded. 7) In the Southwest Atlantic, AABW velocity waned during the latest Miocene. During the late Gilbert Chron a major and permanent change occurred in the pattern of ice-rafting to the South Atlantic, and after 4.35 Ma the increased IRD accumulation rate and frequency of major episodes of IRD accumulation suggest increased stability of the West Antarctic ice sheet. In addition, radiolarian faunas of Hole 514 record at least eight migrations of the Polar Front to the north of the site during the past 4.07 m.y. An apparent increase in the frequency of Polar Front migrations occurred about 2.7-2.6 Ma, possibly in response to oceanic change induced by fluctuations in glacial conditions of the Northern Hemisphere.

    Description: The sites drilled on Leg 35 were selected to study the tectonic relationships and interactions between the Antarctic plate and the Antarctic Peninsula, the Scotia Arc, the southern Andes, and the Chile Ridge. Site 322 was drilled on the eastern end of the Bellingshausen Abyssal Plain where it is bounded by the Hero Fracture Zone to the northeast and the continental rise of Antarctica to the south. Site 323 was centrally located on the abyssal plain, about 30 miles west of the Eltanin Fracture Zone and about 150 miles north of the Antarctic continental rise. Site 324 was located on the gently sloping lower continental rise of Antarctica about 160 miles north of Thurston Island, the closest exposed land.

    Description: The western part of the North Atlantic Ocean holds clues to some of the most intriguing questions in marine geology. But because the geologic problems are many and varied, the sites of Leg 44 were multipurpose in nature. In particular, some of the targets were : 1) the Blake Nose, a spur of the Blake Plateau, to determine the nature, age, and origin of reef-like structures recognized on seismic profiles and 2) the Blake Outer Ridge, a long low ridge of sediments that forms the eastern boundary of the Blake-Bahama Basin, where we hoped to study the stratigraphy and sample supposed clathrates.

    Description: During 2006, the SHALDRIL program recovered cores of Eocene through Pliocene material at four locations in the northwestern Weddell Sea, each representing a key period in the evolution of the Antarctic Peninsula ice cap. The recovered cores are not continuous, yet they provide a record of climate change with samples from the late Eocene, late Oligocene, middle Miocene, and early Pliocene and represent the only series of samples recovered from the northwestern Weddell Sea and spanning the Cenozoic and the initial growth of the peninsula ice cap. Late Eocene sediments sampled in the James Ross Basin are typically characterized by very dark greenish-gray muddy fine sand with some preserved burrowing and are interpreted to represent a shallow water continental shelf setting. Rare dropstones, primarily of well-cemented sandstones and minor ice-rafted material consisting of angular grains with glacially influenced surface features record the onset of mountain glaciation, the earliest such evidence in the region. The remaining cores were collected on the Joinville Plateau to the north of the James Ross Basin. The late Oligocene sediments consist of dark gray sandy mud with some clay lenses and many burrows, likely representing a distal delta or shelf setting. This core contains only very few and small dropstones, and the individual grains show decreased angularity and fewer glacial surface features relative to late Eocene deposits. The middle Miocene strata are composed of pebbly gray diamicton, representing proximal glacimarine sediments. The lower Pliocene section also contains many ice-rafted pebbles but is dominated by sandy units rather than diamicton and is interpreted to represent a current-winnowed deposit, similar to the modern contour current-influenced sediments of the region.
