Description: Zooplankton communities under continuous ice cover in the Kara Sea and near the ice edge in the Pechora Sea were studied. Sampling was carried out from onboard nuclear ice breakers in the period January-April 2000. Breeding of a small-size opportunist species Pseudocalanus acuspes under continuous fast ice of the Gulf of Yenisei began as early as in April, though total mesozooplankton biomass (0.8 mg/m**3) was characteristic of winter condition of community. A classical spring pattern of polychaete and barnacle larvae hatching and euphausiid spawning was observed. Such conditions of the zooplankton community near the ice edge had been described earlier, but this was the first observation of a planktonic community under continuous ice of the Kara Sea.

Translated from Okeanologiya, 2002, 42(4), 518-526, Oceanology, 42(4), 494-501

Description: Vertical distribution of mesoplankton was studied over a single season in 2001 at two sites in the western and eastern parts of the northern margin of the North Atlantic gyre. Plankton was sampled both with use of BR 113/140 net and observed from the Mir deep-sea manned submersible. In near-slope waters southeast of Newfoundland (Titanic Polygon) there occurred intensive interaction between subtropical and sub-polar waters and plankton communities. The subtropical gyre community being more mature from the succession viewpoint created a ''net'' of carnivores and scavengers (shrimp and smaller animals) feeding plankton supplied from the north and thus increasing their own biomass. Due to features of hydrological conditions in 2001 in contrast to other years, the plankton supplied from the north was dominated by small copepods, while abundance of larger Calanus hyperboreus was small. Perhaps due to this fact, abundance of macroplanktonic shrimp decreased, while abundance of mesoplanktonic carnivores (Themisto, Sagitta, and Pareuchaeta) increased. In East Atlantic, within the Porcupine abyssal plain (Bismark Polygon) contrasts in frontal boundaries decreased and community interaction became less expressed. While vertical distribution of plankton at Titanic Polygon was characterized by a series of extraordinary features, distribution at Bismark Polygon was much more ordinary.

Earth System Science Data, https://doi.org/10.5194/essd-2019-92
    Publication Date: 2023-01-30
Description: A checklist of 1541 animal species from the Chukchi, Bering, Okhotsk, and Japan seas and the North Pacific Ocean was generated from 459 research vessel surveys (68903 trawl tows) from 1977-2014 at depths from 5 to 2200 m. The study area spanned over 25 million km2. For each species, the scientific name is given, as well as English and Russian common names along with the following details: areas where species were collected, trawl type (benthic/midwater), real or potential commercial importance, possible product yield and minimum wholesale prices. The checklist can be used for development of bioresource management, aquaculture and conservation, assessment of environmental damage caused by anthropogenic impact (hydro-technical constructions, oil/gas extractions, nuclear reactor accidents, etc.).

    Publication Date: 2023-05-12
Description: At stations to 1530 m depth in the Mozambique Channel and on the Saya-de-Malha and Walters banks seston biomass 2 m above the bottom was lower than at 30 m. Above the Walters shoal this difference was 13.2 mg/m**3 and was not equal to zero for P 〈 0.001. These results contradict previous ideas of biomass increase in benthic layers. The most likely cause of the observed impoverishment of plankton may be predominant consumption of living zooplankton component of seston by bottom and near-bottom predators. In the area of the Walters shoal this consumption is estimated as being about 300 mg/m**2 per day. Animals inhabiting this area live mainly on plankton brought in by horizontal advection, so that existence of faunal assemblages even on shallow-water submarine elevations is supported not mainly by local photosynthesis, but by primary production of surrounding waters.
