    Abstract: Ants act in different trophic levels and are important due to their abundance, distribution and diversity in a variety of habitats, exercising influence on many different organisms and ecosystems. Thus, this study compared temporal variation on the structure and composition of the Formicidae community in canopies of Callisthene fasciculata (Spr.) Mart. (Vochysiaceae) during high water and dry periods, in the Pantanal of Poconé, Mato Grosso, Brazil. Ant sampling was performed on 12 specimens of C. fasciculata, in 2010 and 2011, using canopy fogging with insecticide, in a total of 120m² of sampled canopy. Altogether, 2,958 ants were collected. The 2,943 adults were distributed in four subfamilies, 12 genus and 26 species. Myrmicinae (18.7 ind./m2) was the most representative taxon, followed by Formicinae (3.2 ind./m2), Dolichoderinae (2.2 ind./m2) and Pseudomyrmecinae (0.3 ind./m2). The community is made up of six trophic groups, in which omnivorous (23.5 ind./m2) were the most prevalent, followed by minimum hypogeical generalists (0.5 ind./m2) and arboreal generalist predators (0.3 ind./m2). Although the results showed that Formicidae community richness, associated to C. fasciculata canopies, does not represent a significant difference among the seasonal periods, there are differences as to species distribution and grouping in trophic guilds on the host plant over the seasonal periods, indicating the influence of temporal variation, and therefore, habitat conditions on this community.

    Abstract: Studies on arthropods associated with tropical rainforest canopies contribute to a further understanding of forest canopy community dynamics and their relationship to the structure and function of this ecosystem. This study evaluated arthropod community composition in monodominant Callisthene fasciculata forest canopy throughout the high water and dry periods in the northern region of the Pantanal in Mato Grosso, Brazil, as a part of a project about arboreal canopy arthropods associated with monodominant areas in this region. Sampling was conducted on 12 individuals of C. fasciculata, six from the high-water season (2010) and six from the dry season (2011), using insecticide fogging. A total of 28,197 arthropods were collected. Hymenoptera (the majority being Formicidae), Diptera, Acari, Thysanoptera, Hemiptera and Coleoptera, were the most representative groups. Although the analysis did not show variation in the abundance of individuals between the high water and dry seasons, the arthropod community varied significantly in taxa composition. Opiliones, Embioptera, Ephemeroptera and Scorpiones occurred only during the high-water period, with Polyxenida and Strepsiptera occurring only in the dry season. Thysanoptera was more abundant in the dry season, showing a relationship with the beginning of the C. fasciculata flowering period. In general, the high water and dry seasons maintain distinct communities in this habitat, illustrating how the temporal variation in the phenology of C. fasciculata imposed by the Pantanal’s hydrological regime alters the composition of the associated arthropod communities in the canopy of these monodominant formations in the Pantanal of Mato Grosso.

    Abstract: A sucessão ecológica depende da chuva de sementes. Embora a simples chegada de sementes não garanta o estabelecimento, conhecer a chuva de sementes é o primeiro passo para avaliar o processo sucessional em sítios sob restauração florestal. Por essa razão, foi amostrada a chuva de sementes em reflorestamento e em remanescente de floresta estacional semidecidual no sul do Brasil, a fim de descrever o processo. Em cada área, 18 armadilhas de sementes (1 m2) foram alocadas e visitadas, mensalmente, por dois anos. Todas as sementes amostradas foram identificadas, contadas e classificadas quanto à forma de vida, grupo ecológico e síndrome de dispersão. O remanescente florestal apresentou maior riqueza de espécies e abundância de propágulos que o reflorestamento. A composição de espécies também diferiu entre as áreas. A chuva de sementes, de ambas as áreas, apresentou maior proporção de árvores e de espécies intolerantes à sombra. Várias espécies não plantadas no reflorestamento, possivelmente dispersadas a partir do remanescente florestal, foram registradas no sítio em restauração. A análise dos resultados sugere que a chuva de semente não é um impedimento ao processo sucessional no reflorestamento. Entretanto, o sítio deve ser monitorado por mais tempo a fim de avaliar o estabelecimento, e não somente a chegada de sementes de espécies sucessionais tardias.

    Abstract: Resumo: O estudo de assembleias de coleópteros associadas às copas de florestas tropicias contribui para a expansão do conhecimento sobre a diversidade de espécies e os padrões ecológicos relacionados à distribuição dessa diversidade em ambientes tropicais, incluindo áreas úmidas como o Pantanal brasileiro. Nesse cenário, o presente estudo avaliou o efeito da variação temporal sobre a abundância, riqueza e distribuição da assembleia de Coleoptera associada às copas de Callisthene fasciculata (Spr.) Mart. (Vochysiaceae) ao longo dos períodos de seca e cheia na região norte do Pantanal de Mato Grosso, Brasil. Doze exemplares de C. fasciculata foram amostrados entre 2010 e 2011, seis por período sazonal, utilizando-se termonebulização com inseticida. Um total de 1.663 coleópteros foram coletados, consistindo em 1.572 adultos e 91 larvas. Os adultos se distribuem em 38 famílias e 251 espécies e morfoespécies. Chrysomelidae, Curculionidae, Nitidulidae e Tenebrionidae predominaram em termos de abundância e riqueza. A distribuição das famílias, abundância, riqueza de espécies e agrupamentos em guildas tróficas variaram entre os períodos de seca e cheia, evidenciando uma estreita relação com as condições fenológicas de C. fasciculata ocasionadas pelo efeito sazonal dessa região. Conclui-se que a sazonalidade imposta pelo regime hidrológico do Pantanal e sua influência sobre a fenologia de C. fasciculata afetam a estrutura da assembleia de coleópteros associados às copas nessa formação monodominante no Pantanal de Mato Grosso.

    Abstract: The landscape of the northern Pantanal region is a mosaic of fields and forests, distributed according to topography and hydrology of this floodplain, resulting in a particular pattern of vegetation distribution. Among the forest formations, mixedspecies and monodominant landscape units can be found which are associated with floodable or non-floodable habitats. Our study tested the hypothesis that forest formations with greater tree richness and which are non floodable (cordilheiras) maintain distinct richness and composition in canopy ant assemblages in relation to the seasonally floodable monodominant forests (cambarazais). Sampling was performed in 10 sample areas (five cambarazais and five cordilheiras) by means of canopy insecticide fogging during the dry and high water seasons of the Pantanal’s hydrological cycle. The canopy ant assemblages revealed 105 species belonging to 30 genera and nine subfamilies. Myrmicinae (41 spp.), Formicinae (20 spp.) and Pseudomyrmecinae (17 spp.) predominated. Our results revealed that the composition of canopy ant assemblages varied between cambarazal and cordilheira forests, as well as between the dry and high water periods. Nevertheless, the richness was homogeneous between these forests and in the dry and high water periods. These results show the specificity of each forest, as well as its structure, in maintaining distinct compositions in ant assemblages in canopies in the Pantanal of Mato Grosso.
