Notes: Iodine-doped multiwall carbon nanotubes (I-MWNTs) were characterized by means of Raman scattering and thermogravimetric analysis. The results show that multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) can be effectively doped by iodine and exchange electrons with iodine. Iodine atoms form charged polyiodide chains inside tubes of different inner diameter, which is similar to the iodine-doped single-wall carbon nanotubes (I-SWNTs), but can not intercalate into the graphene walls of MWNTs. The Raman scattering behavior of I-MWNTs exhibits some differences from that of I-SWNTs and the low-dimensional conductive hydrocarbon-iodine complex "perylene⋅I2.92." © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Description: The method for determining the upper limit for safe mining with regard to water and sand collapse prevention under thick alluvium and thin bedrock layers is a critical parameter for ensuring the sustainable development of a mine. The height of the water-conducting fractured zone (HWCFZ) is an important index parameter in the prediction and prevention of water and sand collapse. This research was conducted based on the concrete geological condition of the Zhao Gu No. 1 coal mine. First, a field measurement method was used to observe the HWCFZ of a mined panel. The discrete element method was applied to establish a corresponding model, which was calibrated using the measurement data. Then, calculation models for different bedrock thicknesses were developed to analyze the evolution law of the water-conducting fractured zone at different bedrock thicknesses and mining heights. The safe mining upper limits for different bedrock thicknesses were obtained. The relationships between the developing HWCFZ and bedrock thickness/mining height were determined. Using the research results as the main indices, an industrial experiment was performed on the 11,191 panel. The partition limit mining height was implemented in the panel, and safe production was realized. On the basis of the research results, 40,199,336.3 t of coal resources were successfully released, increasing the resource recovery rate by 31.72% and extending the mine service life by 12.5 years. This study not only provided technical support for the sustainable development of the Zhao Gu No. 1 coal seam, but could also be used for safe and highly efficient mining in other coal mines under similar geological conditions.

Description: CD137 and its ligand are expressed in the bone marrow, and conflicting data exist on the regulation of myelopoiesis by the CD137 receptor- ligand system. CD137 −/− mice have increased numbers of myeloid cells in the bone marrow, indicating an inhibitory influence of CD137 on myelopoiesis. However, CD137 also induces proliferation of hematopoietic progenitor cells and their myeloid differentiation, arguing for an enhancing effect. Here we hypothesized that this latter case represents the situation during infections since expression of CD137 is activation dependent and strongly enhanced during inflammation. Indeed, infections with Influenza, Bordetella pertussis, Mycobacterium tuberculosis , Bacille Calmette-Guérin or E. coli or intraperitoneal injection of LPS led to increased numbers of CD137-expressing cells, especially of CD4 + T cells in the bone marrow of mice. Coculture experiments confirmed that CD137 expression enables CD4 + T cells to induce proliferation and myeloid differentiation of bone marrow and hematopoietic progenitor cells. CD137 also enhances myelopoiesis in vivo since the infection-induced increase in myeloid cell proliferation and total myeloid cell numbers in the bone marrow were significantly lower in CD137 −/− mice. This study reconciles earlier conflicting data by demonstrating that while CD137 – CD137L interactions inhibit myelopoiesis during steady state conditions they increase myelopoiesis during infection.
