Notes: A series of interstitial ternary nitrides R2Fe17N3−δ has been prepared via a gas-solid reaction for R=Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Lu, and Y. These nitrides have structures related to the Th2Zn17 or Th2Ni17 structures of the R2Fe17 parent compounds, but the unit cell volumes are 6%–7% greater, and the Curie temperatures are approximately 400 K higher. The Fe-Fe exchange interactions are increased by a factor of 2.8 by nitrogenation, whereas the R-Fe exchange interactions are little changed. All compounds exhibit easy-plane anisotropy at room temperature, except for Sm2Fe17N3−δ, which shows strong uniaxial anisotropy and may be used to make permanent magnets. The Er and Tm compounds exhibit spin reorientations below room temperature. The anisotropy due to the iron sublattices is easy plane (K1 = −1.3 MJ/m3 at 4.2 K for Y2Fe17N3), but it changes sign to easy axis with cobalt substitution (K1 ≈ 1.0 MJ/m3 at 4.2 K for Y2(Fe1−xCox)17N3−δ when x≥0.2).

Notes: The reaction between nitrogen gas and the series of R2Fe17 intermetallic compounds is studied by thermopiezic analysis on micron-size powders. Nitrogen diffusion in the range 300–550 °C can be represented by an activated interstitial diffusion process D=D0e−Em/kT with D0=1.95×10−10 m2 s−1 and an activation energy Em=0.81 eV. This stage of the nitrogenation reaction leads to the formation of R2Fe17N3−δ nitrides which have structures related to those of the parent compounds. Heating above about 800 °C leads to complete disproportionation of the compounds into a mixture of rare-earth nitride and iron.

Notes: The compounds YTi(Fe1−xCox)11 form complete solid solutions (0≤X≤1) all of which crystallize in the ThMn12-type tetragonal structure. The substitution effects of Fe with Co on saturation magnetization and Curie temperature have been investigated. A neutron-diffraction study has been carried out on YTiCo11 and YTi(Co0.5Fe0.5)11. A strong preferential site occupation for Co and Ti atoms is observed. A detailed analysis of crystallographic and magnetic arrangement is presented.

Notes: Sm2Fe17N3−δ is a promising permanent magnet material but disproportionation above 650 °C means that only low-temperature processing can be considered. Sintering micron-size Sm2Fe17N3−δ powder with the soft, low-melting metals Zn, Bi, Sn, and Al has been investigated. Good results are obtained with zinc. A coercivity of 0.6 T and a maximum energy product of 84 kJ/m3 (10.5 MGOe) have been obtained. Zn7Fe3 is formed as a secondary phase.

Notes: Amorphous Sm(Fe11Ti) ribbons were prepared by melt spinning. After heat treatment, very fine grains (≈50 nm) of the ThMn12-structure phase were obtained with no signs of a separate intergranular phase. Each grain appears to be a single domain. The maximum room-temperature coercivity is 0.56 T, rising to 1.20 T at 11 K. A model is proposed for the coercivity which is based on an analogy with the random anisotropy model of amorphous magnetism. It gives the correct magnitude of the coercivity, and suggests it should vary as the reciprocal of the crystallite size.

Notes: Amorphous melt-spun Pr2(Fe1−xCox)14B has been prepared to test the concept of magnetic-field-induced crystallite alignment. Crystallization temperatures (Tx) of alloys with x=0.5, 0.6, and 1.0 were determined to be 622, 646, and 507 °C, respectively. These temperatures are all lower than the Curie temperatures (Tc) of the crystallized 2:14:1 phase. The glasses were then heat treated at a temperature Tt(Tx〈Tt〈Tc), either in no field or in a magnetic field of 0.3 T applied parallel to the long edge of the ribbon. The degree of alignment was investigated by means of x-ray diffraction and magnetization measurements. A texture was found where the c axes tend to lie in the ribbon plane in zero field, which is slightly modified when a magnetic field is applied during the heat treatment.

Notes: The Su(3) limit intrinsic states in the interacting boson model (IBM) are given by the group theoretical method. A method to calculate the physical states from the intrinsic states is given. Using this method, the physical states of the SU(3) limit ground state band are given completely. Some preliminary results are also obtained for beta and gamma band states. The wavefunctions obtained are expressed in terms of the five building blocks of the IBM wave functions belonging to Sun, Zhang, and Feng. In the SU(3) limit it is found that the building block T+d, which represents three d bosons coupled to zero angular momentum, appears even in the ground state band wavefunctions. The wavefunctions have very interesting physical implications.

Notes: We demonstrate separate readouts of three-dimensional memory by (i) transmission imaging using a conventional optical microscope and (ii) photoluminescence (PL) of the bits created by inducing optical damage within the vitreous silica. Recording was done by tightly focused (objective ×100, numerical aperture 1.3) single shot irradiation of 120 fs duration pulses at a 400 nm wavelength. For the readout, a broadband of PL at 470–600 nm was excited by 400 nm, 120 fs irradiation with pulse energy smaller by a factor of 106 compared with that for the recording. We found an erasing of the PL after 400 °C annealing, while the readability of the bits by the transmission was sustained. This shows the potential for two-bit information recording per single bit by means of separate readout procedures. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Neutron diffraction experiments on Y(Ti,Fe)12 have been carried out to investigate the crystallographic structure and magnetic properties of these compounds. In the ThMn12-type structure, with a space group of I4/mmm, Fe and Ti atoms are distributed on three nonequivalent crystallographic sites. A preferential site occupation for Fe and Ti is observed. The detailed analysis of crystallographic and magnetic arrangement are reported.
