Notizen: [Auszug] Concentrations of dissolved oxygen in the ocean seem to correlate well with climate instabilities over the past 100,000 years. For example, the concentration of dissolved oxygen in Pacific intermediate waters was considerably higher during Pleistocene glacial periods than it ...

Notizen: [Auszug] Leg 113 of the Ocean Drilling Program (OOP) drilled at two sites at 65á° S on Maud Rise, Antarctica. Together, the two sequences provided a nearly continuous record of biogenic sedimentation through the Cenozoic and late Mesozoic14. Hole 690C, on the flank of Maud Rise, contains a ...

Beschreibung: During the early part of the last glacial termination (17.2-15 ka) and coincident with a ∼ 35 ppm rise in atmospheric CO2, a sharp 0.3‰-0.4‰ decline in atmospheric δ13CO2 occurred, potentially constraining the key processes that account for the early deglacial CO2 rise. A comparable δ13C decline has also been documented in numerous marine proxy records from surface and thermocline-dwelling planktic foraminifera. The δ13C decline recorded in planktic foraminifera has previously been attributed to the release of respired carbon from the deep ocean that was subsequently transported within the upper ocean to sites where the signal was recorded (and then ultimately transferred to the atmosphere). Benthic δ13C records from the global upper ocean, including a new record presented here from the tropical Pacific, also document this distinct early deglacial δ13C decline. Here we present modeling evidence to show that rather than respired carbon from the deep ocean propagating directly to the upper ocean prior to reaching the atmosphere, the carbon would have first upwelled to the surface in the Southern Ocean where it would have entered the atmosphere. In this way the transmission of isotopically light carbon to the global upper ocean was analogous to the ongoing ocean invasion of fossil fuel CO2. The model results suggest that thermocline waters throughout the ocean and 500-2000m water depths were affected by this atmospheric bridge during the early deglaciation.

Beschreibung: Supplementary material for Martínez Fontaine et al., 2019 (Table S1), including the radiocarbon ages in benthonic and planktonic foraminifera in six cores in the Chilean margin, beetween ~31°S and ~36°S (Table S3). The age models for the cores are detailed in Martínez Fontaine et al., 2019 and were produced using the information on planktonic δ13C (Table S2). Also included are the Δ14C resulting from the age models.

Beschreibung: A continuous 10-m-long section consisting of roughly two thirds Ethmodiscus rex (a diatom) and one third mixed planktonic foraminifera was identified in a core from 3800 m depth at 9°S on the Indian Ocean's 90°E Ridge. Radiocarbon dates place the onset of deposition of this layer at 〉30,000 years B.P. and its termination at close to 11,000 years B.P. However, precise dating of the foraminifera from the Ethmodiscus layer itself proved to be impossible owing to the presence of secondary calcite presumably precipitated from the pore waters. During the Holocene, high calcium carbonate content ooze free of diatoms was deposited at this locale. As the site currently lies beneath the pathway taken by upper ocean waters entering the Indian Ocean from the Pacific (via the Indonesian Straits), it appears that during glacial time, thermocline waters moving along this same path provided the silica and other nutrients required by these diatoms.

Beschreibung: Late Pleistocene intermediate water ventilation history in the northeastern Pacific has been inferred from benthic foraminiferal carbon isotopic data from seven California margin basins. Secular variations in oceanic d13C recorded at North Pacific ODP Site 849 were subtracted from each basin record leaving a residual d13C history that reflects variations in ventilation. During the previous interglacial intermediate waters above 2000m contained less oxygen than they do today or Pacific deep water at Site 849 was better ventilated. Intermediate water ventilation began to improve during oxygen isotope stage 4 and continued to improve throughout stages 3 and 2. This enhanced ventilation was not contemporaneous at all depths and appears to have progressed upwards through the water column. The diachronous nature of these changes suggest that there was not simply an "on"/"off" mechanism which resulted in higher or lower ventilation in the North Pacific during the last glacial cycle.
