    Notizen: A series of fluorinated aromatic polyethers was synthesized via aromatic nucleophilic substitution of highly fluorinated aromatics (1,2,4,5-tetrafluorobenzene, hexafluorobenzene, and decafluorobiphenyl) with bisphenol AF or bisphenol A. Polymerization with 1,2,4,5-tetrafluorobenzene was not observed, and polymerization of hexafluorobenzene with bisphenol proceeded only if the potassium carbonate-bisphenol ratio was carefully controlled. The polymer condensed from decafluorobiphenyl and bisphenol AF was prepared in 77% yield with an inherent viscosity of 1.01 dL/g. The polymer prepared from the condensation of decafluorobiphenyl with bisphenol A was obtained in 48% yield with an inherent viscosity of 0.28 dL/g. These polymers were very soluble in common organic solvents, formed clear, colorless films, and were thermally stable (〉 450°C by TGA). The fully fluorinated polymer exhibited low water uptake (0.3%) and dielectric constant (2.17). © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notizen: Recent research at the NASA Langley Research Center has involved the production of polyamic acid fibers from resins derived from the reaction of 3,3′,4,4′-benzophenonetetra-carboxylic dianhydride and 3,3′-diaminobenzophenone or 4,4′-oxydianiline in N,N-dimethylacetamide. Resins were extruded into aqueous solutions of ethylene glycol, ethanol, or N,N-dimethylacetamide in order to induce filament formation. These filaments were then washed in water and dried using air or vacuum ovens. Fractured fiber ends were examined using an optical or scanning electron microscope for the presence of macropores, termed voids. Coagulation bath concentration and composition, resin inherent viscosity, resin % solids, and filament diameter were studied to determine their effect on the production of solid core fibers.

    Notizen: Copolymers of fluorinated polyimides and 3,3′,4,4′-biphenyltetracarboxylic dianhydride (BPDA) have been prepared as films and composite laminates. The addition of BPDA was used as a means to achieve insolubility, making the polymers suitable as aircraft matrix resins. Glass transition temperatures, thermooxidative stabilities, and tensile strengths were increased with increasing BPDA content in the copolymers. Although the addition of BPDA did increase the UV cutoff and decrease the percent transmission slightly, the optical transparency of the polymers was still excellent. Dielectric constants of the copolyimide films ranged from 2.6 to 2.9. Astroquartz II laminates made with these resins had dielectric constant of 3.3-3.4. Flexural strength on unidirectional specimens were in the 1.24-1.41 GPa range and flexural moduli were 41 GPa. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.This article is a US Government work and, as such, is in the public domain in the United States of America.

    Notizen: State-of-the-art methods for producing reflective polymer films for space applications involve multiple steps, and the integrity of the metal-polymer interface is less than optimal. A more efficient process was developed that consists of doping polyamic acid resins with gold additives and curing them to form self-metallizing polyimide films. Several moderately reflective, flexible metallic gold films were produced that have good thermal stability and mechanical properties, a strong metal-polymer interface, and in some cases, electrical conductivity. It was found that the polymer system, gold additive, gold concentration, and heat treatment all affect the reflectivity, flexibility, and conductivity of the resulting polyimide films by affecting the degree of metallization of the film surface. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notizen: Addition polyirnide oligomers with nadimide end groups (I) have been synthesized from 4,4′-oxydiphthalic anhydride and 3,3′,4,4′-benzophenone tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride with several isomeric diamines and, nadic anhydride. The low molecular weight amic acid? and corresponding imides were isolated and characterized. Solubility and melt-flow properties of the imide prepolymers were studied to determine the applicability of the resins as adhesives and composite matrices. Thermomechanical transitions of the polymers were obtained by torsional braid analysis. Properties were compared with a similar addition polymer, P13N.

    Notizen: A series of linear aromatic polyimide films that are based on a novel methylene-bridged dianhydride, 3,3′-bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy) diphenylmethane dianhydride, have been synthesized and characterized. High molecular weight polyamic acids were prepared by combining this dianhydride with numerous aromatic diamines. The effects of thermal and chemical imidization of the polyamic acids are discussed as they relate to the dielectric constant, optical transparency, and solubility of the resulting polyimide films. The objective of this work was to obtain low dielectric, optically transparent, and soluble polyimides that can be easily processed as coatings or composite matrices for advanced aerospace and electronics applications.

    Notizen: A series of high-molecular weight condensation polyimides was evaluated to determine the effect of polymer molecular structure on the transmission rate of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water vapor. The polyimide films were prepared from either 3,3′,4,4′-benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA) or pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) with various diamines. The study shows that molecular structure had a strong influence on gas transmission rates with results for some films varying three orders of magnitude from that of other polyimide films. In general, the BTDA series of polyimides had overall lower gas transmission rates than the PMDA-derived series. Polymers prepared with meta-oriented diamines characteristically displayed lower gas transmission than those prepared with para-oriented diamines.

    Notizen: Control of the internal morphology of wet-spun fibers from a fluorinated polyimide has been achieved by varying the rate of polymer coagulation through adjustments in nonsolvent/solvent miscibility and precipitation strength of the coagulation bath. Filament internal morphologies ranged from very porous or sponge-like to fully solid. Intermediate structures included fibers containing a spongy core with a nonporous skin, sponge-like fibers containing large voids, and a relatively solid material containing randomly spaced small voids. The cross-sectional shape of the fiber is dependent upon the coagulation process as well as the volume contraction of the initial extrudate. Drawn fibers (3×) retained the original asspun cross-sectional shape and also lost porosity. Mechanical properties of poly(6FDA-4BDAF) fibers have an inverse relationship to filament porosity. Maximum modulus and break strength for drawn fibers is approximately 6 CPa and 200 MPa, respectively. Asspun mechanical properties were dependent upon the processing conditions and have moduli between 0.4-3.0 Gpa and break strengths of 10-160 MPa. A dielectric constant of 2.50 for nonporous films was measured over a frequency range between 1.0 MHz to 1.8 GHz, showing little dispersion. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
