    Description: Deciphering the tectono-metamorphic evolution of Precambrian terranes can be difficult due to reworking by later superimposed events. Whole-rock elemental and isotopic geochemistry and zircon U–Pb geochronology are often employed in those studies, but these approaches are often not sensitive to the presence of multiple events and medium-grade metamorphic episodes. The Rio Apa Terrane (RAT), an allochthonous fragment of the Amazonian Craton, is a crustal block with a well-characterized crustal evolution but with no detailed thermal constraints for its tectono-metamorphic evolution. In contrast to previous studies, we show the existence of four tectono-metamorphic events at c. 1,780, c. 1,625, c. 1,420–1,340, and c. 1,300–1,200 Ma on the basis of apatite, titanite, and rutile U–Pb, in situ white-mica Rb–Sr, and in situ garnet Lu–Hf geochronology combined with mineral chemistry and phase-equilibria modelling. The c. 1,780 Ma event is recorded in the basement of the Western domain, representing an extensional event coeval with the development of its Eastern domain in response to the retreat stage of the accretionary system. This is followed by juxtaposition of the Western and Eastern domains along a major crustal boundary at c. 1,625 Ma, which is defined by the magnetic profiles and zircon U–Pb–Hf data across the boundary. The third and fourth events correspond to progressive high-pressure/medium-temperature (HP/MT) metamorphism, characterized by an anticlockwise P–T path, suggesting a convergent-to-collisional tectonic setting. The RAT was accreted to the adjoining Paraguá Terrane at c. 1,420–1,340 Ma under an isobaric P–T evolution spanning ~530°C to 600°C and ~10.0 kbar. Subsequently, the combined Rio Apa and Paraguá terranes collided with the SW Amazonian Craton at c. 1,300–1,200 Ma, reaching P–T conditions of ~560–580°C and ~10.9–11.7 kbar during crustal thickening. This study reveals for the first time the existence of a HP/MT metamorphic evolution related to the growth of the SW Amazonian Craton as part of an accretionary orogenic system during Rodinia assembly in the Palaeoproterozoic to Mesoproterozoic.

    Description: Marine pockmarks are a specific type of seabed geological setting resembling craters or pits and are considered seabed surface expressions of fluid flow in the subsurface. A large composite pockmark on the Malin Shelf, off the northern coast of Ireland was surveyed and ground truthed to assess its activity and investigate fluid related processes in the subsurface. Geophysical (including acoustic and electromagnetic) data confirmed the subsurface presence of signatures typical of fluids within the sediment. Shallow seismic profiling revealed a large shallow gas pocket and typical gas related indicators such as acoustic blanking and enhanced reflectors present underneath and around the large pockmark. Sulphate profiles indicate that gas from the shallow reservoir has been migrating upwards, at least recently. However, there are no chimney structures observed in the sub-bottom data and the migration pathways are not apparent. Electromagnetic data show slightly elevated electrical conductivity on the edges of the pockmarks and a drop below regional levels within the confines of the pockmark, suggesting changes in physical properties of the sediment. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) experiments were employed to characterize the organic component of sediments from selected depths. Very strong microbial signatures were evident in all NMR spectra but microbes outside the pockmark appear to be much more active than inside. These observations coincide with spikes in conductivity and the lateral gas bearing body suggesting that there is an increase in microbial activity and biomass when gas is present.

    Notes: Ho/Y and Ho/Er superlattices have been grown by molecular-beam epitaxy using a Balzers UMS 630 instrument. The superlattices were grown on a sapphire substrate with an Nb buffer and Y seed layer. X-ray-diffraction techniques were used to characterize the crystallographic structure and neutron-diffraction techniques to determine the magnetic structures. The results for the Ho/Y systems were consistent with long-range order being formed coherently through the whole superlattice. The moments in the Ho layers were aligned in the basal plane and most of the structures could be described by helical structures with a turn angle between holmium planes of ΨH and between nonmagnetic Y planes ΨY. ΨY is found to be largely independent of temperature or superlattice, while ΨH decreases with decreasing temperatures and at low temperatures takes a commensurate value, so as to take advantage of the basal plane anisotropy. The results for the Ho/Er superlattices differ because the Er has a magnetic moment and the anisotropy favors alignment along the c axis. Between the ordering temperature of bulk Ho and bulk Er, the results are similar to those of the Ho/Y superlattices. The ordering propagates through the Er layers but the Er moments are not ordered. At lower temperatures the Er moments order in a cycloidal (a/c) structure with the basal plane components having fairly long-range coherence with the Ho moments, but the c-axis components having no coherence from one Er layer to the next.

    Notes: Sensitization to indoor allergens has long been recognized as a risk factor for asthma and its associated phenotypes. Immunoglobulin E antibody quantification may be used to confirm that a particular sensitization has a role in the development of respiratory symptoms. However, in order to use quantitative information effectively, it is essential to understand the factors that contribute to the deterioration of symptoms and cause exacerbations. One such risk factor is high allergen exposure. Worsening asthma control is also associated with virus infections, in particular rhinovirus infection. Each of these factors in isolation is unlikely to have a major effect on symptoms. However, the combination of respiratory virus infection, allergen sensitization and concurrent high exposure to allergens markedly increases the risk for hospitalization. Further investigation of this synergism could help to understand the mechanisms of asthma exacerbations and lead to the development of strategies for prevention.

    Notes: Background: Many asthmatics in tropical and subtropical areas have positive skin prick tests to both Dermatophagoides spp. and to the mite Blomia tropicalis. This may be due to recognition by IgE of cross-reactive allergens between the different mite species or because of sensitization to species-specific allergens. A 14-kDa Blomia tropicalis allergen, Blo t 5, has been cloned and shows 40% sequence homology with Der p 5. The aim of this study was to investigate reactivity to B. tropicalis in patients known to be sensitized to D. pteronyssinus and to assess allergenic activity and cross-reactivity of recombinant (r) Group 5 allergens amongst these patients, who live in the UK and who are not exposed to B. tropicalis in their homes.Methods: Patients (n = 19) with asthma and/or rhinitis were selected based on clinical history and a positive skin prick test to D. pteronyssinus extract and were compared with non-allergic skin test negative controls (n = 10). IgE antibody responses to Blomia tropicalis, Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, rDer p 5 and rBlo t 5 were compared by quantitative intradermal skin testing using serial 10-fold dilutions of each allergen. End point titre was the highest dilution giving an 8 × 8 mm wheal at 15 min. IgE antibodies to Blomia tropicalis, Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, rDer p 5 and rBlo t 5 were measured using RAST, CAP and RIA, respectively.Results: All 19 patients had positive skin tests to D. pteronyssinus at concentrations of 0.001 to 1 AU/ml and 10 were skin test positive to rDer p 5 at concentrations of 10−4 to 5 µg/ml. Positive intradermal tests to Blomia tropicalis were seen in 12/19 patients at concentrations of 0.002 to 2 µg/ml. However none of the patients had positive skin tests to rBlo t 5. Non-allergic controls were all skin test negative at the highest concentration of each allergen tested. All subjects had quantifiable specific IgE to D. pteronyssinus, but only two had IgE to B. tropicalis. IgE to Der p 5 was found in six patients, but no patients had IgE to Blo t 5.Conclusions: This study of patients naturally exposed to D. pteronyssinus but not to Blomia tropicalis, provides evidence for IgE mediated cross-reactivity between allergens produced by both mite species. The results suggest that the Group 5 allergens of D. pteronyssinus and B. tropicalis are species-specific.
