Notes: We report the first Raman measurements on a matrix sample prepared by the mass-selected ion deposition technique. Vanadium dimer ions, produced by sputtering, were mass selected with a Wien filter and codeposited with Ar and electrons. Raman spectra gave ωe″= 536.9(1.1) and ωexe″ = 4.1(0.1) cm−1, in good agreement with previous measurements.

Notes: The absorption ("scattering depletion'') and Raman spectra of tantalum dimers in an argon matrix have been measured for the first time. The principal absorption band of the dimer (maximum at 480 nm) shows a vibrational progression with ω'0 =260 (15) cm−1 and T0≤21,330 (20) cm−1. Weaker absorptions are observed between 200 and 350 nm and in the region 550–700 nm. Raman spectra (obtained by exciting into the 480 nm band) give ω‘e =300.2 (12) cm−1 with ωex‘e =1.2(2) cm−1.

Notes: Ferroelectric Ba(SnxTi1−x)O3 (BTS) thin films were deposited using a sol–gel process on LaNiO3-coated silicon substrates. The films showed a (100) preferred orientation depending on composition. The grain size decreased and the microstructure became denser with increasing tin content. The decreasing grain size with increasing tin may be attributable to lower grain-growth rates from the more slowly diffusing Sn4+ ion, which has a larger ionic radius than Ti4+. The ferroelectric phase transition temperature of Ba(SnxTi1−x)O3 thin films with (a) x= 0, (b) x= 0.05, (c) x= 0.10, and (d) x= 0.15 occurs at about 150°, 45°, 28°, and 20°C, respectively. The highest K (figure of merit defined as K= tunability/tan δ={[ɛ(0) −ɛ(E)]/ɛ(E)}/tan δ) was found for BTS thin films with x= 0.10, even though tunability was highest with x= 0.05. An increase of dielectric loss as compared with films with x= 0.10 produced a decrease in K value. The J–E characteristics were highly nonlinear and the electric field resulting in nonlinearity moved to lower electric fields with decreasing tin content.

Notes: We synthesized spinel ZnAl2O4 film on α-Al2O3 substrate using a solid-phase reaction between the pulsed-laser-deposited ZnO film and α-Al2O3 substrate. Auger electron spectroscopy showed that the atomic distribution in the spinel ZnAl2O4 was inhomogeneous, which indicated that the reaction was diffusion controlled. Based on X-ray fluorescence measurements, the apparent growth activation energy of ZnAl2O4 was determined as 504 kJ/mol. X-ray diffractometry spectra showed that, as the growth temperature increased, the ZnAl2O4 film became disoriented from the single (111) orientation. The ZnAl2O4 (333) diffraction peak shifted toward a small angle, and its full-width at half-maximum decreased from 1.30° to 0.37°. At the growth temperature of 1100°C, the morphology of the ZnAl2O4 was initially transformed from islands to stick structures, then to bulgy-line structures with increased growth time. X-ray diffractometry spectra showed that these transformations were correlated with changes of ZnAl2O4 orientation.

Notes: Abstract As one component of a maize genome project, we report the analysis of a number of randomly selected cDNAs, by a combination of measuring mRNA expression, ‘single-pass’ sequencing (SPS), and genome mapping. Etiolated seedling (490) and membrane-free polysomal endosperm cDNA clones (576) were evaluated for their transcription levels by hybridizing with a probe prepared from total mRNA and categorized as corresponding to abundantly or rarely expressed mRNAs and as either constitutive or tissue-specific. A total of 313 clones from the two libraries were submitted to ‘single-pass’ sequencing from the presumed 5′ end of the mRNA and the nucleotide sequence compared with the GenBank database. About 61% of the clones showed no significant similarities within GenBank, 14% of the clones exhibited a high degree of similarity, while the remaining 25% exhibited a lesser degree of similarity. The chromosomal location of more than 300 clones was determined by RFLP mapping using standard populations. The results demonstrate that a combination of analyses provides synergistic information in eventually deducing the actual function of these types of clones.
