Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Sieben Halogenphenole wurden in einem stark nach „Apotheke“ riechenden Garbad durch Capillargaschromatographie, Massenspektrometrie und Vergleich mit Referenzverbindungen identifiziert (Derivatisierung zu Trimethylsilylethern und Heptafluorbuttersäureestern, Nachweis mit FID, ECD, MS und „Schnüffelauslaß“). Die Gesamtmenge der Verbindungen wurde zu 65 μg/l geschätzt, der abweichende Geruch des Garbades kann damit zwanglos erklärt werden. Die Bildung der Halogenphenole dürfte auf den Einsatz von Wasserstoffperoxid zurückzuführen sein, das dem Garbad zur Aufhellung des Fischfleisches zugesetzt wird. Ein Maßnahmenkatalog zur Vermeidung der Bildung der Halogenphenole wird vorgeschlagen.
Notes: Summary Seven halogenated phenols have been detected by HRGC/MS and capillary gas chromatography in a curing bath exhibiting a strong medicinal odour. Detection was made using a sniffing port, FID and ECD, and the compounds were compared with reference using either trimethylsilylation or heptafluorobutyrylation. The total concentration of these halogenated phenols amounts to 65 μg/l, which may be responsible for the medicinal odour of the curing bath. Presumably, the halogenated phenols are formed as a consequence of reactions initiated by hydrogen peroxide (used for bleaching the fish flesh); ways of helping to prevent the formation of these compounds are suggested.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Starting from Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) a functional protein concentrate (FKPC) was manufactured using alkaline digestion of defatted, dried minced krill. The yield of FKPC was 60.3 g from 1 kg of frozen raw krill, equivalent to 57.5 g of crude protein. The chemical composition of FKPC was on the average: 84% of crude protein, 5.6% of moisture, less than 0.1% of fat, 5.73% of ash, 0.31% of carbohydrates, 2.6% NaCl, 0.09% of phosphorus, and approx. 250 mg of fluoride per kg. FKPC exhibits an excellent amino-acid composition exceeding the requirements of the FAO for food protein in all essential amino acids. The protein concentrate has good intrinsic functional properties like solubility (〉 80%) over a broad pH-range, foaming, emulsion forming and emulsion stabilisation. Judging by these results FKPC is a high quality protein concentrate in both nutritional and functional respects.

Notes: Summary Neuroendocrine disturbances [low plasma levels of triiodothyronine (T3), high plasma concentrations of cortisol], morphological brain alterations [enlarged external cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) spaces, dilatation of the ventricles] and altered sleep patterns [fragmented sleep continuity, a reduction of slow wave sleep (SWS) or REM sleep] have been described in patients with anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. The present study investigates to what degree these disturbances interact with each other. In ten anorexic and five bulimic patients cranial computed tomography (CT) to estimate the size of the CSF spaces, blood sampling to measure cortisol and T3 plasma concentrations, and all-night polysomnography were performed. In comparison with patients with normal CT scans, the patients displaying enlarged CSF spaces spent more time in SWS, and the duration of REM sleep was reduced. In the whole sample, a negative correlation was found between the amount of REM sleep and cortisol, whereas a positive association was found between the amount of REM sleep and the T3 level. In addition, the degree of brain shrinkage correlated positively with cortisol and negatively with T3. On the basis of these results, it can be assumed that in patients with eating disorders the disease process with its neuroendocrine alterations affects brain morphology as well as EEG sleep.

Notes: Summary In 12 patients with Huntington's disease, the relationship between brain morphology, nocturnal sleep EEG, and clinical variables was studied. Global cerebral atrophy did not significantly correlate with sleep parameters, whereas atrophy of the caudate nuclei was associated with reduced slow wave sleep and increased time spent awake. Several clinical parameters (e.g., anergia and thought disturbance scores of the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale, illness duration and global clinical assessment) showed significant correlations with global cerebral atrophy. Similar studies in other neuropsychiatric disorders demonstrate associations between sleep alterations and brain morphological changes of different localizations, thus pointing to a complex relationship between both. It can be hypothesized that the caudate nuclei may be involved in sleep regulation; indirect evidence from studies with positron emission tomography (PET) point in the same direction.

Notes: Summary Nocturnal sleep was studied in 14 human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive patients without opportunistic infections of the central nervous system. Seven patients had no bodily complaints at the time of the investigation. Patients exhibited an impaired nocturnal sleep with longer sleep onset latency, reduced total sleep time, reduced sleep efficiency, and more time spent awake and in stage 1. Stage 2 sleep was significantly decreased; in 2 cases, sleep spindle density was extremely low. REM latency was reduced and correlated negatively with depressive symptomatology, while the percentages of REM and slow wave sleep were normal. No significant differences in sleep parameters were present among patients in different stages of the illness, or between patients with and without bodily complaints. Ventricular size and sulcal width on computed tomography scans correlated with sleep variables indicating reduced sleep quality, and with REM density. Decreased tryptophan plasma levels were associated with shorter and less efficient sleep, and with reduced stage 2 sleep. The findings demonstrate that sleep EEG investigations can be valuable for detecting and monitoring central nervous system affection in HIV-positive individuals.

Notes: Summary Nocturnal cytokine levels were measured serially in 12 healthy male volunteers for 12 h, including 8 h of polygraphically monitored nocturnal sleep. Plasma concentrations of interleukin-1β (IL-1β), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) were determined in 30-min intervals by enzyme-linked immunoadsorbant assays. In some subjects cytokines were not detectable at all. In the remaining volunteers (27% for IL-1β, 58% for IL-6 and TNF-α, respectively) occasional values near to the detection limits (DL) of the assays could be measured. With respect to IL-1β and IL-6, plasma levels above the DL were significantly more frequent during sleep than during the preceding time of wakefulness. No temporal association with NREM or REM episodes could be shown. TNF-α values above the DL were randomly distributed across the 12-h period investigated. It is concluded that in a considerable percentage of healthy subjects small amounts of cytokines are released at night. Release of IL-1β and IL-6 is temporally associated with sleep, whereas the release of TNF-α is not. It remains to be established whether nocturnal cytokine release reflects either an interaction between sleep and host defense mechanisms or a sleep-independent circadian rhythmicity.

Description: From mid November 1975 till mid May 1976 an integrated research programme has been carried out in the Atlantic sector of the Antarctic between 68°West and 14°East and 50° and 60°South by means of the FRV "Walther Herwig" and FMS "Weser". Data on krill and krill larvae have been gathered concerning frequency, horizontal and vertical distribution with respect to the krill biology. Furthermore hydrographical data on the environmental conditions have been recorded. The problems of locating and catching the krill have been solved to a large extent. The processing of krill and the development of krill products has been tested bt a great number of different technologies. The investigations have been concentrated on the developaent of the products for human consumption. Besides krill, antarctic fishes have been caught, investigated and partly processed.

We performed a genome-wide association study for alcohol-related cirrhosis in individuals of European descent (712 cases and 1,426 controls) with subsequent validation in two independent European cohorts (1,148 cases and 922 controls). We identified variants in the MBOAT7 (P = 1.03 × 10−9) and TM6SF2 (P = 7.89 × 10−10) genes as new risk loci and confirmed rs738409 in PNPLA3 as an important risk locus for alcohol-related cirrhosis (P = 1.54 × 10−48) at a genome-wide level of significance. These three loci have a role in lipid processing, suggesting that lipid turnover is important in the pathogenesis of alcohol-related cirrhosis.
