Notes: Summary Wood storage has a great influence on the efficiency of a pulpmill. Great problems arise when using outside chip storage, especially in processing hardwoods, in that hardwood chips discolorate after a few days, which is not the case with spruce chips. The causes of such a different behavior of beech and spruce were investigated. It could be shown that a sufficient amount of active peroxidase, malate dehydrogenase and oxygen are prerequisites for the formation of phenoxy radicals within the beech lignin. This causes formation of new chromophores that discolorize the wood. Sufficient amounts of such enzymes are present in beech wood after harvesting.

Notes: Summary Several recent techniques using the ultra-violet fluorescent dye FITC, were adapted for the in vivo study of Spongillid nutrition. Studies of the ingestion of FITC-lahelled bacteria by Ephydatia fluviatilis (L.) and Ephydatia mülleri (Lieberkühn) show that the series of steps involved are the same as those proposed by others in their studies of the ingestion by Spongillidae of non-nutritive particles such as carmine and Indian ink: Most of the bacteria are ingested by the choanocytes (Figs. 1–6). They are further transmitted to the archaeocytes, collencytes and amoeboid cells of the mesohyle (Figs. 4–10). In the cells of the mesohyle, principally in the archaeocytes, the bacteria lose their characteristic morphological appearance (Figs. 6, 11–14). This fact supports the hypothesis that the archaeocytes are the main organ for digestion in Spongillidae. Fluorescent wastes are accumulated and rejected in the exhalant channels by some archaeocytes (Figs. 11, 12). Experiments using FITC-labelled casein and rabbit serum proteins demonstrate, in addition, that E. fluviatilis and E. mülleri remove soluble proteins from the surrounding medium. We have further shown that this usually involves the same cell types as those used for ingestion of bacteria: Labelled proteins are concentrated by the choanocytes (Figs. 15, 16, 21, 22); then distributed to the archaeocytes and the amoeboid cells in the mesohyle (Figs. 15–20, 25, 26). There is evidence that pinacocytes and spiculoblasts are also able to concentrate labelled casein, though in a smaller quantity (Figs. 23, 24, 29). Fluorescent wastes are excreted in the surrounding medium through the exhalent channels, after having been concentrated by archaeocytes (Figs. 27, 28). The fact that we were unable to demonstrate the existence of an extracellular proteolytic activity for E. fluviatilis, supports the conclusion that digestion by sponges is strictly intracellular.

Notes: Summary Hypothalamic (T hy), spinal (T sc) and colonic (T c) temperatures were measured in Pekin ducks spontaneously dabbling for food in cold water (5° C). In agreement with observations in the pigeon and the fowlT hy was found to be consistently lower by about 0.5° C than the other core temperatures. The drop ofT hy during dipping head and neck into the cold water was not substantially greater than that ofT sc, while both changed more thanT c. The measurements do not support the assumption that the hypothalamic region in the duck is exposed to substantially greater temperature fluctuations than other thermosensitive parts of the body core.

Notes: Summary Daily mean core temperature ( $$\bar T_c $$ ) in huddling Zucker rat pups reared at 25°C revealed the onset of a significantly lower $$\bar T_c $$ in fa/fa pups on day 6. The difference between any pup's $$\bar T_c $$ and the mean $$\bar T_c $$ of that half of the litter with the highest $$\bar T_c $$ on any given day was an early marker for genotype. Calculating the mean difference for any 2 consecutive days from day 6 onwards gave values for each fa/fa pup that were outside the 99% confidence limits for the individual observations in the Fa/-pups.

Notes: Summary Samples of 96 polyvalent and virus-specific immunoglobulin batches commercially available in West-Germany were tested by enzyme-linked immunoassay and immunoblot for the presence of anti-HTLV-III antibodies. 37% of the polyvalent and 87% of the virus-specific batches were positive. It was concluded that these preparations are still safe and because of their reportedly low titer neutralizing antibodies possibly beneficial in certain cases, such as newborns of HTLV-III positive mothers or after accidental exposure to infectious material in clinics or laboratories.

Notes: Summary In the present study 10 patients with renovascular hypertension due to fibromuscular hyperplasia and fibromuscular lesions of extrarenal arteries were investigated. The 10 patients were predominantly female (90%), showed a mean age of 31.4±12.0 years and a mean duration of hypertension of 3.2±4.0 years. Four of the 10 patients (40%) showed unilateral and six (60%) bilateral stenosis or occlusions of the renal arteries. In two (20%) cases a combination of renal artery stenosis and coarctation of the abdominal aorta was observed. Other extrarenal arteries were affected as follows: mesenteric superior artery (50%), subclavian artery and/or arteria anonyma (40%), carotid arteries and/ or their branches (30%), vertebral arteries (10%), and mesenteric inferior artery (10%). In eight of the 10 patients the most prominent clinical symptom was hypertension. Clinical symptoms from extrarenal artery stenoses or occlusions were mild. Two patients with fibromuscular lesions of two and three intestinal arteries, respectively, suffered from angina abdominalis. In two cases with stenoses of the iliacal arteries intermittent claudicatio was observed, whereas involvement of the subclavian artery was associated with only mild symptoms. One patient with occlusions of both internal carotid arteries had two episodes of cerebrovascular ischemia. Plasma renin activity was determined in both renal veins in seven of the 10 patients (70%). Four of the seven patients (57%) showed a PRA-ratio of ≧1.5 either under basal conditions or 15 and/or 30 min after i.v. stimulation with 40 mg furosemide. Only one of the five patients with revascularization operations was cured postoperatively. In one patient only the intestinal arteries were operated. Three of five cases treated with various antihypertensive drugs were normotensive. Our results show that in patients with renovascular hypertension due to fibromuscular hyperplasia extrarenal arteries may be frequently affected. The most frequent site of extrarenal lesions was the mesenteric superior artery. In two of the 10 patients renovascular hypertension was combined with a coarctation of the abdominal aorta. In this study the effect of reconstructive renovascular surgery was insufficient. Thus, these cases should first be treated with antihypertensive drugs. The diagnostic validity of renal venous renin activity was limited because of the high percentage of bilateral renovascular lesions.

Notes: Summary We ask whether desert ants (Cataglyphis fortis) perform path integration on their homeward as well as on their outward journey. If path integration does occur on the return journey, then, after an enforced detour, the ant's trajectory should point directly at its nest. To test whether this is so, ants were trained to forage at a spot 25 m from their nest. As an ant began its return journey to the nest, it was caught and transported to a test area where it was released either 2 m or 12 m from a wide barrier which obstructed its homeward path. The direction of the ants' trajectory after detouring around the barrier corresponded closely to that predicted on the assumption that the home vector is accurately updated during the detour.
